I am not saying don't draft an ILB. It will have to be addressed sooner rather than later. It also depends on when they draft one with the comfort level they have with Foote, Sylvester, and possibly McFadden. Now if there is one with great value in the 2nd round, they have got to snag him up.

As we all should know by now, Colbert and company will draft the BPA almost regardless of position.

  2. I would happily take Minter in round 2, but I would be VERY surprised if the Ravens pass on him.

They lost Ed Reed AND Ray Lewis this year, so they could be looking to replace either role in Round 1. However, I could see them going Elam as his ball-hawking skills and personality will be a much-needed injection for that locker room. Lewis was a HUGE personality and Reed's on-field skills were not to be ignored. They will need a vocal leader on that defense.

Minter is much more reserved, but would be an incredibly solid player for them for many, many years. He has already been linked to them several times too, so if the Steelers want him, they will probably have to grab him at 17.

The second QB went at 63,64 after they were jumped. In a normal year that is a second rounder lol.

The Ravens took Ogletree at 32.

    WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH.

Ogletree gets the nod over Minter at ILB? what the hell did i miss. Alec is the better athlete throw him at the will maybe or let him develop, doesnt use his hands at all to disengage and seriously...i havent seen such over pursuit since the days of that kid out of florida...plays for the pats now but his name eludes me for now.

Minter is a pure linebacker that you can plug behind a solid line and he can tackle, reminds me of a faster version of angerer, maybe not as good as lee but i like him a lot.

Also why has teo fallen of the face of the earth? Kid can play, a year long demolition should not be erradicated for one game or one foolish endeavour which has no bearing on his football prowess, let him fall and let the ravens take him, i like kids with chips on their shoulder and can actually diagnose plays and hit the whole and wrap up.

One final note on minter, everything i saw on him that made me think he has some work is down to experience, sometimes slow to react to PA and audible, takes all the right angles but speed is a little meh but give this kid a year or two in a solid system like PIT or BAL and he will pay out.

    2K,

Ogletree without the baggage and red flags, I would too take him over Minter. The evaluation process is NOT just about talent. It's about character, medical, football IQ, game tape. Then talent, then the combine numbers. Te'o, nope. In the SEC, Minter was very very productive. Against Alambama, Te'o was over-matched, slower than heck, and looked lost.

  9. La'Veon Bell is getting a lot of media attention, so he may very well be unavailable when the Steelers pick in Round 3 or 4. The biggest Red Flags: scouts say he dances to find a hole too much (Mendenhall) and is seen as a "me-first" player (Wallace).

He has been linked to the Broncos, the Jets, and Cowboys, and the Steelers already, and COULD be one of the best backs in the draft. His speed isn't superior, but Alfred Morris managed pretty well last year. However, Alfred Morris had EXTREMELY high character marks and still drives a 91' Mazda to keep himself grounded.

I would look at Cierre Wood, ND pretty hard. He is a VERY strong back, with a great blend of size and speed. He DID get a 2-game suspension last year, but it was "unspecified,"and for violating a team (not NCAA) rule. He still managed a 1,000 yard season and had a great Sophomore and Junior season. He is not a finished product, but would be an incredible value in the 6th round.

  10. OR...

    Dennis Johnson, RB Arkansas!

Johnson was overshadowed by Knile Davis for most of his career at Arkansas, but broke out after Davis was injured. Johnson is basically a bowling-ball style back that is quick, strong, and can get tough yards. He can also pass protect and will be sitting pretty on in to the 5th and 6th rounds. He sounds a lot like Ray Rice to me...and I am sick of losing to Ray Rice!

Well if i had the time and i had contributed to this draft process like years past enough to actually have my opinion matter you and i would have to go to home depot pick up a few tables and go to town because i vehemently disagree. Talent and the ability to improve is paramount, character issues matter but many are overblown because people want to write about something or have their research mean something. If we are talking football IQ then Minter beats Ogletree hands down, just watch their eyes- their first steps, Minter diagonoses faster than Alec and on top of that his angles are far better, ogletree relies on what he deems superior athleticism to adjust his poor angles- but that wont translate to the NFL, he will just get juked out of his shoes or run right by.

WAit are you agreeing with me or not lol. Not entirely sure now that I read that back.

Teo for me is a big hunch, I see a sean Lee there, i like the kid, but i completely agree that opposition does matter. id take a flyer at him though if he fell to the second.

You realise you didnt answer my question? im not entirely sure what you are agreeing with or disagreeing with here.

As for the combine, you think im not aware that its just one big massive pagent for the most part, and anything of use is behind closed doors?

Not a rookie buddy :p you should know that you and the godfather taught me after all.

I think as fans, as draft nuts we can only do so much and the one thing i think we should do is not fall for what these analysts do all the time, hyping their own agenda or profile, lets watch tape, lets make judgements and see how things go out.

for now i think minter is the better player, but who knows, i havent seen enough to convince me otherwise and thus far ive only watched the front 7 on the D side with any real attention.

Agreed. Lived in Arkansas near Fayetteville for the last few years and watched quite a few of there games. I too was impressed by Johnson as a RB and Returner. Would be some great value at the 5th/6th rounds as you said.

  16. I need to get on a soap box for a minute and explain why I have been for certain players over others, even if they may fit within the BPA model.

I know that many times people look at "BPA" to mean the best player available, regardless of position or need, but that is simply not true. Need plays a HUGE factor into it, as the team wouldn't value a player if they didn't think he would be an upgrade or an eventual replacement for someone currently on the roster. Last year, the Steelers could have used Dont'a Hightower at ILB, but David DeCastro was a better player at a position that needed to be upgraded. Last year, the Raven's probably still would have taken Upshaw, but decided to take a good deal, drop back into the early second round, and grab their guy AND another pick. Both were smart plays that benefited the team by upgrading positions with quality players.

BPA is a process of weighing your team needs against the players available and deciding to go with the player that will benefit your team the most. That being said, I think the Steelers (as well as MANY OTHER organizations) tend to look at a few positions per round that need to be upgraded and, from that list, create their board around guys that can help in those ways. With that mentality, I would say there are only 4 positions in the 1st round the Steelers should be looking to upgrade with 1st round talent for a variety of reasons. Safety, ILB, CB, and OLB, in that order.

Safety - I have been vocal about this and makes the most sense because of age, injuries, lack of depth, and a good class. However, Kenny Vaccaro is the only guy I really WANT in the 1st round. Elam I am lukewarm on.

ILB - should be a priority with Foote, Spence, and Sylvester all being major question marks this year and into the future.

CB - will have to be addressed at some point as Ike is 35, Keenan Lewis is gone, Gay is a nickel back at best, and there are a lot of question marks surrounding the remaining people. I don't see the Steelers going this way in round 1, but if the right guy falls I could see it.

OLB - I don't see this happening, simply because I think the Steelers have a lot of faith in Woirlds. Tomlin doesn't like to compliment anyone to keep them from getting a big head, but Woirlds has a lot to prove and I really think he will surprise everyone.

I don't think the Steelers will go guard because, even with some solid guys available, their O-line isn't near the mess it once was. They have 4 starters that have been selected within rounds 1-2 the past couple of drafts and re-signed Ramon Foster to a 3-year deal (meaning he isn't just a band-aid). If Foster had a 1-year deal, I would bite, but 3 more years is considerable.

I REALLY don't think the Steelers will go Wide Receiver because the talent level between 1st rounders and 4th rounders this year is minimal at best. Sure, there are some studs, but not enough to warrant a 1st round pick when they have quite a few more holes.

Even if Star falls, I don't see the Steelers grabbing him. DL isn't as big of a concern as people may think. Remember, the 3-4 scheme doesn't produce big numbers and the Steelers managed to get the #1 defense last year. That doesn't happen if the DL is terrible. I see them using that as an opportunity to sucker someone in to giving them more picks, but they like Ziggy, Heyward and McClendon. Plenty of teams need help on DL, so they will have more than enough buyers.
