Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

  1. Yeah I hear ya there but unfortunately Jonathan Cooper and Chance Warmack are not going to make these guys money but QBs do. Especially a guy like Clausen since he is from Notre Dame. It's like why ESPN has a giant hard on for the Yankees, Lakers or anything else New York or LA. I mean could you imagine them if Tebow went to the Patriots? They're coverage of the Jets was apparently beyond unwatchable (I sure as hell didn't watch them after awhile). It's sad but something we are stuck with. I watched Geno a lot last year, he got off to a good start but stunk down the stretch against really some bad defenses. Him sliding should be no surprise but people need to talk about the QBs for the press, it's like why EJ Manuel is covered constantly but really media favorite Dallas had the worst pick and biggest reach in the 1st but Travis Fredrick is a center so he is boring to them. I can't say I like the process but something we are stuck with.

I hate to admit this, but NFL network is leaning away from what they did best, cover each pick. They are now tilted towards getting ad revenue and conseqently we are now getting the Geno Smith barrage of coverage, or the Tebow, Revis, horsecrap over and over.

What I really liked is Greg Cosell, VP of NFL films, said Matt Barkley is a 4th rounder on tape. They need more of that guy and less of the dude with the martian ears and his sidekick blonde. I still feel like Mike Mayock does a way better job of evaluating talent that the buttholes on ESPN. I like the people on nfl network on the path to the draft, great show, but again their program director pushes the splash QB stories to the front page. I am more interested in sleeper picks in the 5th round, than some surfer puke from California claiming he'll make those other 31 teams pay..... Really, here's a clue, Matt. Average arm behind a good OL, with talent up the ying yang at Wideout. And then there's the injured shoulder. And then Geno Smith is texting, firing his agent, maybe he should have spent more time on practicing his craft. Practice, you talking 'bout Practice? Practice?

  3. I work from home and have NFL AM on every morning...They talk about the same stories over and over again everyday just as bad as ESPN. You would think 4 hours of programming you would be able to cover more then Revis and the Jets and Jacoby on dancing with the stars. They finally talk about other teams and its only a 30 sec segment while they spend 20 min on how Jacoby done a back spin on a reality show on a different network.

Demo, will he be available at #32?

Maybe not. He already has a first-round grade from some publications. A couple things that might scare teams away from him are his reckless style of play (even though he has no history of injury) and his smallish build (6'2", 222 ilbs). He takes risks, which lead to big plays and game-changing turnovers, but also the occasional blown play. More discipline is the thing that I would like to see from him, if anything.

Our defense needs more big plays, however, and he can be an asset for us.

At this point, trying to project anyone other than Jadeveon Clowney or Teddy Bridgewater to anything more specific than "Round 1" or "Round 2-3" is a crapshoot. I'm looking at all manner of prospects, which is why Austin Seferian-Jenkins is my top offensive prospect for us.

I was gonna ask about his size too, because he looks more like a safety to me. His speed looks good enough to play in Troy's spot, as long as his instincts are good enough. But I would think once he reaches the NFL he would add 10-15 pounds naturally, and maybe that would put him at ILB instead?

I had Reggie Dunn on the war board for a specific reason, he is like Stepfan Logan only bigger and faster and could be an emergency WR if you dress him.

an article on bleacher report about the ten sleeepers in the draft. That is the article I found on Q, who I think if he heals is going to be the steal of the draft. (Quentaris Smith). The article also props up Sharmarko Thomas, it's a good read and it was 2 months before the draft.

  12. Christian Jones is a better LB prospect than Shazier....kid has size, length and speed and will fit in w Timmons and V. Williams.

I wonder if Shazier can play SS, Carnel Laked played LB at UCLA.

  14. I was thinking the samething, looks a little small for LB.

I just read Dallas had Travis Frederick 22nd BPA on their board . Everyone else had him in the 60's and 70's. When Larry Warford is going to his 3rd probowl a d Frdereick is struggling. You bet your happy ass I say TOLD YOU SO. Jerry Jones makes Matt Millen look good as a GM. ;)

Looking at 2014 Oakland @ 5 taking Jake Matthews or Jadaveon Clowney. Thoughts ? Who goes first for DB's Clinton-Dix or Purifoy Bridgewater to the Jags and Cyrus Koandjo won't make it out of the top ten.

  17. I know tanking in the NFL won't be accepted but both the Jags and Raiders could be very happy if they are in the top 3 next year with all the good QBs coming out. Next year is going to be fun, so many elite prospects, especially compared to this year.

It's pretty much a given that those teams will tank, regardless of if they wanted to or not. Oakland's new GM is highly regarded around the NFL, supposedly, so I would hope he'd be smarter than to pick D.J. Hayden because he's that in love with him. The Raiders should have picked Star Lotulelei, who was there at 12. He was my personal #3 prospect overall, in fact. Even at 12, Hayden was a reach because he's an enormous risk. It's like going all-in on a two pair hand; very risky, but you do crazy things when you're desperate.

I know why Hayden was a late riser, but I don't trust those prospects in any situation. What has Chandler Jones done in New England over the last two years? Similarly, I'm not crazy about Justin Hunter and Manti Te'o.

Anyway, the Jaguars screwed the pooch in the draft as well, even though they didn't reach in the first round. If tired of them catching flak for picking Joeckel, but they didn't do anything great in this draft, and that's what they needed. The Chiefs messed up picking Fisher, but Andy Reid is the most overrated coach in the NFL. There's a reason why his Eagles sucked over the last two years or so, and it's not because of bad rosters. They screwed themselves over in the draft so many times I wasn't sure how they would fix it all in just this draft alone. Brandon Graham, Nate Allen, Danny Watkins, Nick Foles, DeSean Jackson, all for their own reasons ineffective and even bust picks. The Chiefs are proudly continuing the Andy Reid-can't-offer-input-on-prospects-but-the-team-follows-it-anyway tradition.

About the Eagles, I don't know what they're going to do with Matt Barkley. If he has Matt Kalil protecting him, he's great. He won't have that in Philadelphia regardless of if and when he plays. He might be better protected than he was at USC last season if the Eagles' line stays healthy, but he'll probably wash out of the NFL in a few years or else be a career journeyman backup. The Eagles are another team that will likely bomb out this season, so they too might be looking to take a QB next year. Chip Kelly runs an offense that requires a QB who can run, ala Dennis Dixon. That's not Barkley. Barkley won't last in Philadelphia long regardless of what happens, so I don't know why he was picked and not someone like Ryan Nassib who can at least run with the football. Why Kelly is the Eagles' new head coach is baffling to me, since his offense is wonky, and why else would he have been hired but to implement his offense into the team?

To add some incite. Frederick said in an interview that the Titans called him when pick #29 was being drafted to see if any other teams had been in contact. Based on their drafting of positions, it is fair to assume he would have been their pick at #40. If you watch the Cowboys games you will see 79% of snaps the interior line is collapsed by bull rushers. Frederick will help improve these numbers. He is also one of the few centers who could play guard without needing to gain strength. The Cowboys have a center who has played well when not injured in Costa. Frederick can play guard and slide over to center if Costa gets hurt. If Costa stays healthy, Fredericks addition allows them to get rid of Livings or Bernadeau next year when their contracts balloon. Surely Steelers fans can realize the benefit of having position flexibility when players get injured during games.

Warford is a similar player, who shares the nasty attitude but he is not a center and has a lingering injury.

Some have commented about Jerry Jones and Andy Reid's drafts, I know an insider and while these GMs won't admit this, they rely heavily on their heads of scouting even if they have final say in the draft. While the Eagles have had terrible drafts recently it is because they lost people in their scouting department, not Andy Reid. That is what changed in Philly.

In regards to the Landry Jones pick. I see where the team is going. If he develops into a quality backup its much cheaper on the team in 3-4 years than to sign a FA QB and can help the team stop needing to restructure every year. I would have drafted Kaseem Greene instead of Jones in a heartbeat but I do understand their reasoning.
