p.s. Werner is a true Junior - 22 years old.

Something tells me the Steelers are going defense in the first round. That could be especially true if Tomlin's established pattern continues:
    2007: Timmons
    2008: Mendenhall
    2009: Hood
    2010: Pouncey
    2011: Heyward
    2012: DeCastro

Tomlins is a creature of habit. Are the Steelers a lock to take a defensive player? I am thinking S, CB, or NT would be the pick.

    The Pittsburgh Steelers select:

    Jonathan Cooper, G, North Carolina

Is there a player left thats worth the 17th pick ?

One of reasons Brady looks so good is that he has had one of if not the best OL in football IMO.
Picking Cooper would likely make at least the interior line one of the best in football today. Werner may end up being very good same goes for Vaccaro but Cooper there is very little doubt and has position flexibility.

Vaccarro was off the board. I listented to your points beach and I slept on it. Our run game sucked, and Ben got pressure up the middle. Beachum and Foster can play more than one spot, makes them great as the 6th, 7th linemen to dress. I am hoping Worilds is the answer and that Carter heals, Robinson shows promise, etc.., Pouncey is hurt A LOT, Cooper can play OC at a high level.

Tomlin likes two things, guys with a quick twitch and competition in camp, so it came down to Cooper and Werner. I am not worried about the combine, both players had a good pro day. But Cooper had an outstanding pro day, great feet. That equates to protecting the best player on the Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger.

Werner has upside but the thing that got me was he went 4 games without a sack, to me that is inconsistent. I also went on 3-4 sites to see who was ranked higher or went higher in the mocks, (and I looked at 20 mocks at 1 in the morning), it was close but Cooper came out ahead.

So, Papa, between Austin and Bailey ... did you have any fun watching WVU 2012 ?

I do see what bites is saying about Tavaris's talent level, but am with you, if Bailey would actually make it to 3rd ... he was a demon on ST too... universally a good football head and physical player. Really want to see him in Black-n-Gold.

  9. Tavon Austin will be a solid player, but not for the Steelers. Look at the receivers on the roster right now and you'll notice that only two of them (Cotchery and Burress) are OVER 6'. Burress may not even make the team, but at 6'5" he is always a threat in the red-zone. On top of that, Haley likes those taller and quicker guys because it creates match-up problems (see: Larry Fitzgerald and Dwayne Bowe). Heath Miller had a career-high season last year, and I am willing to bet that, when the Steelers DO pick a WR, it will be one that is at least 6'2".

Obviously there is only 1 player that would fill the NT need, Star Lotulelei. With S or CB; you could go Vaccaro, or Elam at the S position and a guy I really like at CB is Xavier Rhodes or possibly Desmond Trufant.

I don't understand why the Steelers haven't used a first round pick on a CB since 1997. It's not like Chad Scott wasn't servicable. He did have a few good seasons with the Steelers. If Rhodes is there and Cooper and Star are not; he has got to be among the top 3 BPA.

I think we have enough threads on here, so far we have had a few guys POUND THE TABLE. Okay we took Cooper, bb is happy. Bailey in the third would make MOS happy, and Wolff in the 5th would make me happy. Anyone else? get your war drums out and start banging.

I think Rhodes is going to Tampa or Miami, I don't see him lasting. Plenty of CB in round two to pick from as is WR, but only one OG has a second round grade, Larry Warford and the Cowboys pick one spot ahead of the Steelers. Kyle Long is interesting, but he is a tweener, OG/OT not sure where he fits in.

Eric Reid or Robert Woods in the 2nd. Without a doubt they are positions of need and top 5 players at their respective positions.

there is a chance, some really good WR middle second as well. NOw you have what Brady Had, a top shelf OL to keep the QB from getting killed. Cooper was a safe pick, lunchpail guy, he upgrades Foster who has cement feet.

  17. Fellas, when considering who the Steelers might draft I definitely think we need to consider guys that have return value, multiple guys at that. Unless they sign Larod Stephens-Howling they literally have no one back there (assuming they don't risk Brown) and if history is a good indicator, they'd be much better off with multiple candidates to return kick and punts instead of putting all their eggs in one basket.
