With Bell signing his franchise tag offer today and addition of Wilcox: Who gets cut to make room for Bell and Wilcox? I would like to keep all the players they are kicking around as ones that could be cut .... http://www.steelersdepot.com/2017/09/2017-camp-questions-will-moved-make-room-bell-wilcox/ ....at the end of the day let it be Golden (cut) and Suttton (for half year via IR) I guess? I would cut Golden as I feel he has no value at safety and I would take the risk of having someone else in his spot on special teams. In the article they say Golden won't get cut because of depth concerns but I'm hoping Mitchell and Dangerfield are ready in time for opener .... plus Gay has been getting reps back there (as last resort)...don't see how anyone can do worse than Golden at safety. Just my opinion Other options are cutting Feiler (who is an excellent run blocker but bad in pass protection) or Big Dan (who has limited usage options due to his lack of athleticism). However, I would rather keep them. Steelers are making a big mistake if they try to sneak Brian Allen onto practice squad where he can be poached at any time even if he makes it onto the squad. I can't even believe they mention cutting Moats in the article. That would also be a huge mistake in my opinion.
Per Steelers.com Two subtractions (Sutton and Dangerfield) plus three additions (Wilcox, Johnson, and Le'veon Bell signs his 2017 franchise tender) and the Steelers are at 54 players.
I guess J.J. Wilcox is an upgrade over Dangerfield, and pretty much everybody knew Sutton was headed to IR. Don't understand why they'd resign Johnson. Does this mean he'll be cut again when Bell drops the roster exemption? Why not just sign one from the PS for a week then put him right back on the PS Saturday?
Could be Johnson leaving again when Bell fully back...if they signed a practice squad player I believe he'd have to clear waivers again when dropped back to practice squad (there may be a limit to how many times a team can do that back and forth from practice squad as well). WIth Johnson a veteran there is no waiver process and the team can just work out whatever agreement they want with him. With Dangerfields ankle injury they may be thinking they can control his return to the team anyways. I'm fine with these decisions ... will be interesting to see who goes when Bell is fully back.
Steelers still formulating plan to replace Coates, who was not just a 3rd receiver but a gunner on special teams as well as kick returner (pretty good one too). I just keep thinking (it's a nagging feeling really) that this was a mistake and a mistake that will be compounded by the fact that he was traded (pretty much just given) to a conference rival with an up and coming team and QB. Why trade him at all, but to the Browns is worse (we have all seen how ex-players sometimes rise even more to the occasion against the teams that got rid of them). This move, to me, only makes sense if the Steelers genuinely believed his groin and knee surgery as well as mangled fingers would render him a player that would never live up to expectations. If so, I hope they are right about that. I hope, also, they are right about Hunter being the real deal and worthy of being kept over him. Heck, they kept Hey Bey over him. Sorry guys, still have a bad feeling and still scratching my head some. Help me feel better with some comments to the contrary please.....
If it makes you feel better . . . The 6th round pick you got from the Browns for him (and a future 7th rd pick), was the same 6th round pick you gave the Browns for Justin Gilbert. See? I feel better already.
My brother is a lifelong Browns fan (our family is somewhat split down the middle with Browns/Steelers fans) and he is elated to get Coates, Lyman. He actually told me many of his fellow Browns fan friends were pissed when Browns passed on Coates in the draft and Steelers got him. I have to keep telling him Kizer is the real deal like I do on this message board and others because frankly, after decades and dozens of changes at QB with no real improvement at all or for long, he has an "I will believe it when it happens" attitude. I'm not wrong about Kizer. If I am, then he will be the first Favorite QB in a draft I've been wrong on since before Ben was drafted. It is all about skill sets. He has every measurable skill set including the one above the shoulders. I'm not saying he is perfect but from a scouting perspective you can check all the boxes (although some will argue not the box regarding accuracy, but I've disagreed on this board with my reasons for why).
Lymen, I do feel a little bit better when I watch this though: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-...uld-be-TD-on-perfect-pass-from-Roethlisberger ....and when I recall all the times he failed to track the ball well, had alligator arms (like above), or cut a route short or just plain gave up on a ball.
Tech, I think Coates will be a good WR but still not the linchpin to our team. We should be fine. Here's a link from SteelersDepot about Hunter: http://www.steelersdepot.com/2017/09/mike-tomlin-explains-justin-hunter-made-steelers-roster/
I read that article, Mex, and it had me excited to see opposing teams trying to cover Brown, Rogers, Martavis, Hunter and the new tight end in the red zone
