IIRC, he was a throw-in in the deal where Larry Bowa went to the Cubs and Ivan DeJesus went to the Phillies.

yes u dog bc at the time sandberg played 3b and they still had schmidt coming off a MVP season. the cubs were smart and made him play 2b and Sandberg won a GG and MVP in 84 a year or 2 after the trade. unreal for the phils not to play him at ss. 2b was juan samuel. to throw him in was idiotic and a typical bad phils 80's move.

factoid i just saw -- in 1947 - the owners/gms of ny and boston agreed to swap ted williams for joe dimaggio but the deal was squashed bc NY wouldn't add Yogi Berra into the deal.

WOW. I never heard that. think of the fortunes of the 2 franchises if that happened? Would Williams finally get a WS ring playing with Mantle then? Would Boston be better or worse with Dimaggio? Hard to think of.

  4. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

Surprised you never heard that story before. The thinking was both players were better suited to the other park.

Anyway, despite that megadeal not happening, the Yankees and Red Sox did originally acquire Dimaggio and Williams in trades. What teams were they acquired from?

Dimaggio was traded from the San Fran Seals while Williams was traded from San Diego's minor league club.....

  6. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

San Francisco Seals is correct for Dimaggio. And you're on the right track with Williams, however the answer is simply the San Diego Padres, They did not "have" a minor league club, they were a minor league club, a member of the Pacific Coast League the same as the Seals were. The Rangers' current AAA team (Round Rock Express) is actually the modern offshoot of the Williams-era Padres (at the time the MLB Padres came into existence, they were the Phillies' AAA team and moved to Eugene, OR that season).

ok-does anyone have a new question for us ?

  8. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

OK, in the 1973 draft, the first pick was LHP David Clyde, who was immediately promoted to the majors to help boost the Rangers' sagging attendance. The fourth pick was Dave Winfield, who was also immediately promoted to the majors by the Padres. The third pick was Robin Yount, who would break camp as the Brewers starting SS the next season at the age of 18.

The second overall pick would also reach the majors for the first time at the end of 1974, though he needed a few more years to establish himself as a regular player (after being traded by the team that originally drafted him), but would end up making more All Star teams than Yount did. Who was he?

  9. Catfish Guest

George Brett. their rookie topps cards were the same year. can't think of anyone else that worthy.

  10. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

Nope, good guess. George was a rookie in '74, but he was drafted in '71.

He was drafted by your team, 'fish, and was traded for one of the heroes of your '80 WS team.

hmm either lonnie smith, who was a philly in 80 or that stiff johnny stearns?? stearns was a 2 sport star and had the nickname "bad dude." more like "bad turd." hahhahahaha

  12. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

John Stearns is correct. He made the AS team 4 times in a 6 year span playing in the same league as Johnny Bench and Gary Carter, so I guess somebody thought he was an OK player. And he got you Tug McGraw.

  13. Catfish Guest

yeah but not as a phillie. he played elsewhere. they had bob boone so stearns was dealt. yeah ole Tugger. Sad he died so young.

  14. Catfish Guest

only 1 man besides that buffoon charlie manual led the phils to not 1 but 2 100+ winning seasons and he's not the late Dallas Green. Who was he?

  15. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

    Danny Ozark!

  16. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

Who was the last player to have at least 9 hits in a single World Series?

  17. Catfish Guest

    sean casey.

    the most with 10...the babe!

  18. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

The record for a single series is 13, actually, done by Lou Brock, Marty Barrett, and Bobby Richardson. Babe's record is being the only one to get 10 in a 4 game series.

  19. Catfish Guest

    i got some bad info...

    next !

  20. Underdog Franchise Player Patriots

Besides Roger Clemens, who are the only two multiple Cy Young award winners who are HOF-eligible that have not been voted in to the Hall?
