So did Mathewson...he allowed only 13 hits and ZERO runs.

I'm REALLY curious to hear who the guy is that "no one knows"...

  3. was there even such a thing as a relief pitcher when mathewson played?

  4. AxeMurderer Legend Cowboys

It wasn't a designated position, but if a pitcher was struggling, they'd replace him (typically with an "emergency" starter).

  5. ok, time for an old guy rant.

as much as i liked the guy on a personal level, sparky anderson is the symbol to me of one of the things that ruined baseball for me. i get that it's all about winning, but in a very large sense, that's a damn shame.

when mayo smith coahed the tigers to the win in 1968, it was fun, because he was a guy, like all managers at the time, who managed his team by the seat of his pants. he worked with instincts and hunches. he didn't have computer analysis of every at bat in baseball history. modern statistic-driven baseball bores me bigtime, and sparky was real bad about that. if the numbers told him to pull the pitcher for the next batter, it would happen. period.

i know why they do it, but to me, when u take the human element out of the game and treat it like an insurance company's actuarial tables, u take the fun out of it too. i remember the tigers 68 win with a lot of pleasure. the 84 win? not at all. it was a mechanical exercise.

Times change Lulz. Get used to it. I just bought a new car with so many electronic buttons on both sides of the steering wheel, dashboard, etc. I have no idea what over half of them are for. I swear to God, if you try to figure them all out while driving, you'll be in a wreck. Plus I got one of those push button starters which I don't like because I'm just not used to that crap.....I think it's supposed to be called stinkology, not technology.

  7. AxeMurderer Legend Cowboys

    Correct.

No -- us old geezers prefer to rant.

  8. the hell u say :)

and tons of those changes are awesome. for 279 dollars, i have a computer the size of an attache case that's most likely more powerful than anything in existence when i was born.

but i don't want everything computerized. some people love autotune. i see it as one of the signs of the apocalypse.

  9. AxeMurderer Legend Cowboys

Whoever invented autotune is an agent of Satan.

So the answer would be "NO"! There were no relief pitchers when Mathewson played. A team had to use a different starting pitcher.....

You mean something like The Matrix? When the machines rule the humans.....

What burns me up is those people that drive and talk on the phone at the same time on a highway, then hold traffic up or cause a wreck, very dangerous, imo......I'd like to shoot everyone I pass by, if it was legal......

  12. it's not, but if i were on the jury, i'd vote for acquittal :)

  13. AxeMurderer Legend Cowboys

I'd go with "temporary insanity," sentenced to time served.

13 to do it? i said no relievers. i read about the donut man but thought he got a win in relief?

i was looking for mathewson and a guy from 1898.

remember the series was 8 games at some points, not 7. i think mathewson did it in 7.

im done done done. mickey lolich had 3 complete games. doesn't any baseball trivia site accurate anymore?

no more from me. all i do is give incorrect questions. not fair to you guys!

  16. it was clear that mickey was hot and mclain wasn't, so they bumped mickey in the rotation - something that will never happen again thanks to the fact that accountants run the game now. it's all about numbers now, and the numbers flatly say u can't do what mayo smith did in 68.

  17. don't give up, cat. and allow me to make a suggestion.

the internet is a wonderful thing, it's the greatest library in history - but it also has a downside in that any idiot can post stuff, regardless of how true it is. my suggestion is to trust sites with a known reputation, but when u find some juicy tidbit on an unknown site, look for corroboration from another source.

  18. Catfish Guest

    nah lulz--too many incorrect questions.

  19. AxeMurderer Legend Cowboys

NONE of the guys were relievers (although I believe one of Red Faber's 3 wins in 1917 came in relief).

The "world series" as we know it didn't start until 1903.

The first series (1903) was best-of-nine, as were series from 1919-1921.

  20. Catfish Guest

now im really done. the guy in 1898 is credited with 3 wins so how is that possible if the ws didn't start till 1903?

    done. finished. kaput.
