I think Pickett takes over the job this season.

  2. gidion72 Legend Steelers

    All three played good.
But if you had to grade them it would be
    Pickett A+
    Rudolph B+
    Trubisky B
All good grades, but clearly Pickett was the best. Rudolph threw the best pass of the game, that dime to our new number one WR Pickens.

Mason “Fumbles” Rudolf will be traded when the right offer comes. Is Roquan Smith still asking for a trade? Devin Bush suxs Walrus Wang, and Spillane is a good backup. Steelers need OLB depth and another starter at ILB to tweak the D. I like the DL group they have .

One more observation on the game. For all the slob knobbing Belichek gets, he pigeon holed Olsweski into a ST returner and gunner. Gunner got open and has sure hands. Great slot WR potential and a ST ace .

I love the way gunner looks on offense. Our WRs might be the best group in the whole league.

I really hope Tomlin is smart enough to make Pickett the starter and just ride with him. He had a 151 QB rating in his second game lead a two minute drill TD drive for the second time this preseason. Really looks like a good NFL QB. Trubisky had a rough outing and Rudolph was ok. We drafted Pickett because he was pro ready and he hasn’t done anything to make anyone think that he isn’t ready. He really might be our next stud QB.

Has Kenny Pickett done enough to win the starting job?

Kenny Pickett said he doesn’t think about his position on the Steelers’ depth chart. If that’s true, he’s the only one in Steelers Nation not thinking about it.

Pickett showed again that the lights aren’t too bright, and the stage isn’t too big in the NFL.

In two preseason games, the rookie is 19-of-22 for 171 yards and three touchdowns. It appears a given he will enter the season as at least the Steelers’ No. 2 quarterback, if not the starter.

Has he done enough to overtake Mitchell Trubisky?

“We’ll address depth chart-related things over the next couple of days as we zero in on our next opportunity,” Tomlin said, via NFL Media. “I don’t make knee-jerk reactions or statements following the performance.”

The starting job always was seen as Trubisky’s to lose, but no one saw Pickett doing what he’s done. Pickett looks the part of franchise quarterback and sooner than later.

He went 6-of-7 for 76 yards and a touchdown against the Jaguars’ first-team defense, perfectly executing another two-minute drill. He threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Benny Snell with 23 seconds left in the first half to complete a five-play, 63-yard touchdown drive that took only 42 seconds.

“It’s probably who he is,” Tomlin said of Pickett’s last-minute heroics. “I know he did it next door (at the University of Pittsburgh). He probably did it in high school. Some things people are born with.”

Tomlin had said he wanted Pickett to see more “varsity action” against the Jaguars, but after the touchdown throw, Tomlin had seen enough. Mason Rudolph replaced Pickett to open the third quarter.

    Pickett played only two series.

“That was all I planned to play him,” Tomlin said. “I would’ve liked to have possessed the ball more in the first half and thus have a bigger body of work. Some things are outside of your control. We’ve got to get first downs for that to happen.

“It could be said that, for some of the offensive people that we wanted to take a look at, a lack of conversions limits some of that.”

Pickett did his part. Again. Now, it’s up to the Steelers when he becomes their QB1.

What do we have to lose? Probably the division title if we don’t start Pickett. I haven’t seen a QB perform this good in a Steelers uniform except Ben a few times. Preseason or regular season. I watched most of Bradshaw’s career and all of Ben’s career. If Tomlin wants to make sure he doesn’t have a losing season just roll with it baby. Trubisky doesn’t have that eye test pass that Pickett has. Even Rudolph seems better than Trubs. But Pickett looks like a star. Ben has had some good games like his back to back six pack games.

Im not going to disagree with you, but my guess is they will want to protect him for a few games to get acclimated to the NFL grind. Just guessing, but I actually think you are right that they have a better chance at Ws if Pickett starts.

Probably safe to consider the maturation process also. A lot can go wrong real fast for Pickett if he's thrown into the fire too early when there really is no immediate rush. Let Trubs start and see how well that goes knowing full well you have viable options waiting in the wings.

If Pickett were to get destroyed early on it would seriously effect the Steelers future and also bring a whole lotta shit down on Tomlin for not being patient... and thats the key for me, patients. There will be a right time when things will fall into place regarding Pickett, but right now, in my opinion is not the time to just baptize him with fire. Run Trubs out there and see what happens... trust the system in place.

I appreciate what you are saying Willie, but Cincinnati is going to eat Trubisky for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I really believe Pickett would fair much better against the Bengals.

It took me a while to warm up to Pickett, because alls anyone talked about up to the draft Willis, Tomlin kept gushing about Willis like he was going to save the Steelers. Then draft day he was there for the taking and they select Pickett, my mind was like WTF? They never talked about Pickett in Pittsburgh at all. After seeing the first two preseason games I know why. Because he should have been a top ten pick and they never dreamed that he would fall to us. He looks as ready as Herbert was if not more so. So why wait in the what have you done lately NFL?

PS Willie, didn’t you see plenty of Trubisky when he played for the bears? You know he folds under pressure, and so does the rest of the league.

I've mostly just caught highlights but Pickett passes the eye test to me. Still, I only like putting him in if the rest of the offense is ready. With Johnson and Claypool and now Pickens, I think the WR core is there. Harris and Friermuth round out the skill spots nicely. If there's any doubt about the oline then I think Trubisky should start for awhile. When Ben came in for Maddox, the offense was full of veteran leadership and that was a huge boost for him. Is this offense set for success with Pickett? I think he is the QB for the future but don't ruin him.

Make up your mind. Two weeks ago you wanted Rudolph to start.

Trubisky is going to be the week 1 starter. As pro ready as Pickett was/is, there isn’t a need to rush him into action. Pickett has preformed great so far, but going against 2nd team defenses for the most part with vanilla schemes personally makes me not buy into the hype up, for now.

Two weeks ago Pickett hadn’t blown away our expectations. Pickett came in early enough against Jacksonville to play against the same players Trubisky played against. Don’t you guys think the SB is the standard in Pittsburgh? Trubisky isn’t sniffing that, Pickett looks like he really has what it takes, so why put off the obvious thing that will happen anyway?

But, maybe thats what the O-line is supposed to prevent. I expect the Steelers to be super pumped vs the Bengals. Everybody will be gunning for them and on their 'A' game.

He won a few football games with the Bears who they and their fans will admit didnt have a solid O-line. Pittsburgh has an O-line... apples to oranges, I believe.

PS - Admittedly, Im not a Trubs fan per say, but i do think under the coaching and circumstances in Pittsburgh he is going to be sufficient.

You aren't a fan of Trubs, I sure as hell am not a fan of the Steelers, but since when is it the Steeler way to just be sufficient? I would have to think if Picket continues to play at that high of a level, they would need to find a way to see if he could rise to the level of actual starters and not settle for sufficient.

While I agree with your post, I just dont see them going rookie just yet. I think in a 17 game season there is time to make counter decisions if necessary.

I just read the camp report for QBs, any Steelers fans calling for Mitch to start has got to be out of their mind. Mitch only completed 59% of his passes in camp. Rudolph 67% and Pickett 70%
Let’s get real, if your QB isn’t completing his passes it means he’s less accurate and the offense will be stagnant.
