Technically, Cugnot's vehicle was a tractor used by the French army to pull cannons - not an automobile. There was also an electric "horseless carriage" invented by a Scotsman (Anderson ?) in the early 1800's.
Robert Anderson. Made a battery powered vehicle. There was an English guy that made a steam driven vehicle around the same time as well.
