Prospects, and the future of the NHL

Discussion in 'NHL General Discussion Board' started by KilkennyDan, Nov 1, 2014.

  1. Carolina had 2 prospects that look good at the World Juniors:

Lucas Wallmark (2014, fourth round) scored four goals for Sweden, tying teammates Oskar Lindblom and Adrian Kempe as the team?s top goal scorers. Wallmark, who served as an alternate captain, also tallied two assists and finished with six points. His dominant performance extended to the faceoff circle, where he had a 58 percent success rate (13th best of the tournament).

Sergey Tolchinsky (2013, free agent) was one of Russia?s top goal scorers, producing four goals and adding one assist. Tolchinsky?s offensive performance included two game-winning goals and one power-play goal.

Mikey, I seen wallmark get a nice goal in the top corner, that's about it, didn't really pay much attention after, not sure if he could make the nhl, his stats in the swedish league aren't that great, but he's playing with older players and he's only 176 lbs.

    Good read.

I think the NHL's problem has more to do with the mickey mouse approach to hiring rather than the actual scouting ability. I think scouting is a symptom of the major problem. You still have way too many of these guys

    that think hiring these guys

will fix what have been perpetual problems among more than half the franchises in the league going back 15 years.

I like how they pointed size as one of the reasons for overvaluations in drafting. I think it also explains why teams are so willing to grossly overpay for Buff, Brouwer, Bickell, Mule, Lucic, Penner (until now), etc.

updated Central Scouting List. leads me to the question of who exactly comprises Central Scouting? I know all the NHL teams help to fund it but who are the scouts that make up Central Scouting and who oversees these lists?

Cherapanov, Petrecki, Hamill, Aliu. some real Garth gems there.

  9. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

Aliu fell to the 2nd. Dale scooped him up. What a mess that guy was/is. Packaged and disposed of to Dudley and ATL after 2010.

It would have been more appropriate if Cherepanov was drafted by the Leafs I think.

Team Orr 7 Team Cherry 0

Konecny had a great game playing with connor, was ranked 10th in the summer and dropped to 26th overall ranked because he didn't add any size or improve his defensive game, should be looked at once again.

Orr just missed the extra point.

I find it interesting how some teams are going smaller on the def, looking for players that can skate and block shots instead of the old fashioned stand-em up at the blue line approach and push em out of the crease. they want puck handlers with offensive skillz. sorry cutter

  17. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

Forwards too. 5' 10" guys with limited ceilings but good skating are okay to take now too.

  18. rediiis Guest

yeah, forwards in a skating game will own slower big guys...the game is evolving

just saw some excellent numbers on recent draft picks.
still not as good as the info Dan has collected, Dan's over a much larger stretch I should add, but the graphs are easy enough to read.

Matty, do you know how they determined the pick values? This is clearly not the same thing as the draft value charts floating around.

BTW, I refer you to a very interesting analysis of the Buffalo Sabres rebuilding process that appears* to be heavily dependent on accumulating draft picks. That study used the Schucker Draft Value chart from around 2007, which I think is no longer considered valid. I think the value of draft picks have evolved as we got into the salary cap era, and where teams cannot retain players as easily as they could in the past, (max. 7 or 8-yr. contracts, etc.). I posted a link to that in the Sabres and the Stats boards.

(* BUF appears to be accumulating a lot of high draft picks - well, actually they have accumulated a lot. However, their purpose is not to draft and develop most of them for a future in Buffalo. The WPG trade demonstrated their true intent, i.e., accumulate a great deal of attractive assets and then starting to move some of this quantity in order to obtain quality. Not everyone has to like the trade on Wed., but few would deny that BUF received the highest quality in that transaction. TM confirmed in his post-trade presser that this has been his plan since day-one.)
