Prospects, and the future of the NHL

  1. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

The Florida Panthers have signed defenceman Ian McCoshen to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The Panthers drafted McCoshen with the 31st pick of the 2013 NHL Draft. He was an alternate captain for Boston College Eagles this season as a junior, scoring six goals and adding 15 assists in 40 games.

The 6-foot-3, 218-pound rearguard could have returned to Boston College for his senior season which would have allowed the 20-year-old to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2017, but has decided to make the leap to pro hockey instead.

McCoshen could conceivably crack Florida's blue line next season, given the hole created with the Erik Gudbranson trade. (SN)

The Sabres have acquired the rights to forward Jimmy Vesey in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft...

Where is buffalo going with this?

This is good news since I think it means Jimmy is going to sign with Buffalo. First, NAS would have (presumably) given BUF to speak with him. Second Terry Pegula usually gets what Terry Pegula wants. If you don't like that, then tough shit. Go out and become a multibillionaire and see if that changes things.

It's either they have prior knowledge that he will sign or they're gambling on the fact that he's good friends with eichel. Remember he also promised the preds many things as well.

The sabres had 4 third round picks, not a big gamble.

TM is the antithesis of Darcy Regier, (yes, it's been awhile but it is still very refreshing to contrast the two GM's). TM makes a plan and then acts to get it fulfilled. DR lingered around in the shadows never revealing his plan and hoped a victim would wander near enough to pounce. (He did make some very one sided trades in BUF's favor.)

There is no guarantee that the Sabres will sign Vesey by Aug. 15. That was just like when he traded for ROR nearly a year ago. The odds are extremely high that Jimmy signs with Buffalo.

Get ready for the REV line! Reinhart, Eichel, Vesey.

Oh, the Sabres extended DeLo today; very solid fourth line. One more winger and one more blueliner and this team will be more than merely on the rise.

The pick was originally MN's and came by way of ANA in the McGinn trade.

i'm really having a hard time ranking jake bean. the defenseman can score and that causes draft geeks problems. did I say I can't wait until the draft?

vesey wants top six minutes, pp role, shoeshines and limo rides. being named captain may swing his choice. western and southern teams need not apply.

Sure sounds like he wants to stay home.
Hawks fans have pretty much given up on him after this and his comments a few days ago.

From a dollar and/or coaching perspective, I would think Minnesota, Chicago, Dallas, and TB are the best landing spots for him. NYI not far behind. So I'm guessing he picks Buffalo or Boston. Boston he doesn't have to leave his lady friends or homies. Buffalo allows him to pluck from uncle Terry's treasure chests. I think Toronto is too risky but who knows?

Chicago and TB would end up trading him after 2 years. Even though Chicago has a good history of giving players very soft landings in terms of TOI and money (Leddy, Saad, Frolik, Dahlbeck, Nordstrom, etc.) it may be a deterrent if he was even considering a franchise out of the NE.

I'll make this easy on everyone. These are the odds for where Vesey will skate:
    - BUF 85%
    - BOS 14%
    - anywhere else 1%.

Bear in mind that this article was published before he stated that he will be in Buffalo this week and that he is "open to anything".

From what I can gather about Vesey's priorities, Buffalo checks off every one of his boxes. That's why I give the Sabres such high odds.

Too much attention paid to somebody that hasn't played one game pro and was a 3rd round pick.

That's a bit too dismissive in my view. A lot has changed since Vesey were taken in the third; if he were available for the draft this year he would have been taken much higher. Just as some third rounders turn out to be great players, we know a lot more about Vesey now. He projects as a top-six forward in the NHL, and that rarely can be said about a third rounder.

The simple fact is that it is very rare to see anyone with this potential reach the point where he gets to choose his team before he's had one faceoff in the NHL. Like it or not, he is very newsworthy.
