This is a VERY impressive debut. Poised, polished, confident, athletic. I'm tired of hearing about his lack of experience. He looks good. Too bad this isn't an open competition. Stat line so far: 13-15, 123 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 0 Sacks, 17 points for the offense in his 3 drives.
If this continues there's no way he doesn't see the field at some point this year. He looked awesome.
Blown away with Trubisky... calling it now - STAR in the making. I went from not liking the pick to loving it in one half of preseason. Athletic, eyes in the back of his head, looked like he'd been doing it for years, no panic, throws on the run going left or right, took check downs, accurate, fast. Wow. Bear man you're right, he will see the field, and soon.
What a range of emotions I went through in this game. Started by watching Mike Giraffe look like which I can best describe as an abortion to position of QB. He was stiff, nervous, unathletic as anybody I have ever seen play the position and made bad decisions. I didn't have high hopes for him but at worst thought he would just be a checkdown king but that would have been an improvement to what he actually did. I thought the starting defense outside of the penalty laden long drive looked good but the offense was just a pile of vomit thanks to the Giraffe. I was depressed and preparing my mind for what it would be like to be a fan of an 0-16 because while I put little weight in preseason, the offense looked like they hadn't been practicing and this was the first time they ever played football. Then Trubisky enters and holy shit, it actually gave me hope. He looked poised, athletic, comfortable and athletic. He was basically the polar opposite of the Giraffe. All i can say is wow, I didn't expect that. Game didn't look to big for him and for a guy who lacks experience, he sure as hell looked like he had a firm grasp on the offense. Arm is phenomenal and accuracy was impressive. It was one game but man was that a glimmer of hope I really needed after the suffering we have had to go through the last few years. A few other bright spots, Tarik Cohen. This kid is going to be fun to watch. Be a great compliment to Howard. Eddie Jackson, he was flying around the field. He isn't afraid to stick his head in there either, came flying up a few times. Leonard Floyd's sack was something I expect to see a lot of this season. Looks bigger and that should scare people because he is just as athletic and fast. I still think the Bears will struggle to win games this season but the future is looking a lot more promising than it has in a long time. If Trubisky can continue to improve, he will be the starter sooner than later. I said 8 games but at this point that may be a very low number. I don't give a f*ck what Pace said "the plan" was for him, if he is the best QB on the team, he plays and tonight he looked like that best QB on the team by far.
I actually think the plan last night was perfect. Bring him in with the pressure of a 2 minute situation then come out the second half knowing your the guy the rest of the way. The Bears will come out and say there is no competition. Glennon is the starter. Blah blah. But now the pressure is ramping up on Glennon while Trubs is building confidence. There should be no rush. But if this trend continues the Bears would be fools to not start giving Trubs first team reps.
Right now I'm not going to focus on any negatives from last night, which there were some. Still feeling very encouraged this morning. If he plays this well again in game 2 and Glennon struggles again, Trubs should definitely get at least 50% of the reps with the first team in game 3.
For what it's worth, Fox has confirmed that there is no change to the depth chart after last night. Trubisky is still #3.
Chicago Bears fans are like a beaten wife who falls in love with the stranger that holds a door open for her. I'm not ready to drop and gobble after one preseason game. The list of preseason stars who turned into regular season nothings is endless. Was it nice seeing a Chicago Bears quarterback not suck? Yes, absolutely... but Rex Grossman's first 5-6 games of 2006 were pretty exciting too.
Alright...I'm in. Start this kid now. I know it was preseason and he didn't face the best competition but watching that kid play last night was fun. Great feet and pocket awareness....and love his arm. Cut Sanchez....give Glennon a clipboard. All aboard the Trubisky train.
It's already 100% evident he has tools that Rex doesn't. Pocket awareness, mobility, athleticism, throwing on the run, none of which were demonstrated by Rex even in those early games of 2006. Yes, it is only 1 preseason game but we have reason to be excited and it's not only because we're a QB starved fan base.
Brother, the fact that you're comfortable making that statement after the last 32 minutes of the 2nd most meaningless preseason games in the season, makes my point for me.
Trubisky showed off some physical tools Grossman never possessed. Meaningless game, yes. But those throws weren't meaningless. Whether he was in the pocket or on the run he showed touch and acccuracy. He showed arm strength and intelligence. He showed an ability to sense the rush....run away from the rush...and put the ball where only his receiver could catch it. He had poise and confidence. Name another Chicago Bears QB you've ever seen combine all those skills together in a game. The best part was how excited the rest of the team seemed by him last night and all the comments being made from players on both sides of the ball about him.
Yes, I am comfortable saying that he has those tools and Rex doesn't. That doesn't mean he will be great, maybe he won't even be good. Maybe in the end he will be worse than Rex. But after 32 minutes in a meaningless game I can say with 100% confidence he is more mobile, more athletic, has better awareness and ability to throw on the run than Rex ever had.
I didn't intend for this to turn into a Grossman v Tribs debate. I just used Rexy to illustrate that I, and we, have been excited about that 'new car smell' at the QB position before.
