ok-but this is Lee here and prospects are just that - prospects. carlos carrasco, and that can't missed catcher we sent to cleveland were huge at one point too and missed. even the OF'er the Phils sent for Halladay - Michael Taylor isn't doing so well. Prospects are not guaranteed.
Giants are coming to town and you guys are catching them at the right time. They are making all pitchers look like Cy Young winners.
Doesn't matter one iota. Phils are going nowhere and everyone -- fans included -- know it. Time to reload.
No...but Halladay tossed a perfect game and hurled a no-no in the playoffs. At least we got SOMETHING there...
he's 35 and hurt. his first yr in philly he won the cy young. his second year he had a perfect game and the second no-hitter ever in the playoffs and it was his playoff debut. not too shabby. taylor was a can't miss and missed. dom brown was a bust till this year. it happens. halladay is a future hall of famer - taylor is a bust.
sorry axe - i didn't see your post till after i submitted mine. you can't even compare halladay to taylor.
True but giving up a can't-miss prospect for only 3 years of service (as good as they were) seems to have to sting a little. Wasn't Halladay brought in to bring another championship to Philly. I don't follow the Phillies very well, so I am unaware on how good Michael Taylor was supposed to be.
yeah but halladay was worth it. his first two yrs were electric in philly. and when he allows one run in game 5 in the first inning in the best of 5 and your team cant score two runs to win isnt tough to hang on him. charlie refuses to manufacture runs when needed.
That "can't-miss" prospect has a career batting average of .135. That's why, when your team is at or near the top, you deal an unproven prospect for a sure-fire proven stud. No, we didn't win a title with Halladay. But that doesn't mean it was the wrong move to make. And beyond that, getting a Cy Young, a perfect game, and a playoff no-hitter FAR MORE than makes up for losing a guy who can't hit his girlfriend's weight.
Can't say I really blame the BoSox -- Amaro was asking for moon in return for Lee. Makes me think they weren't all that interested in dealing Lee unless someone REALLY unloaded the wagon for him. Looks certain Utley is staying. I'm fine with it -- I know it's going to be a good amount of money for an older player who's had some injury problems the past couple years, but sometimes you have to do what you can to keep a guy as a "lifer." Ut is still productive, has a great work ethic, and more importantly, can be a mentor because he approaches the game the right way. Rollins will stay -- he's pretty much said he won't waive his no-trade clause. You might have been right about Paps -- his salary could be a sticking point for teams wanting to trade for him. M.Young and Chooch appear to be the guys most likely to be moved, although neither will bring a lot in return.
axe-no moves for whatever the reasoning means doom for this franchise for the next 5 yrs. they didn't get one addition today and they need a ton of them ! terrible. come down on price on lee and eat some of the papelbon money. do something. this core can't win anymore.
Days not done yet -- looks like we're still trying to move Michael Young. Would have liked to have made a lot of moves, but we can't just give guys away. That's counter-productive, too. Besides, there's always the off-season, right?
Just read that Young will accept a trade to the Yankees. No report on what the Yankees are giving up.
Won't be much. But since he won't be with the team next year anyway, anything is better than nothing.
Well, you can't just GIVE players away. If you don't have a dance partner, it don't matter if you're Fred Astaire. Seeing what Ruben was asking for in return for Lee, it's pretty clear he didn't really want to deal him, and I'm okay with that.
