Rumor Watch: Hextall Turns Down Offer from Edmonton

NHL insiders love the Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers. Nothing creates more juicy stories and speculation than two teams that have a combined one win in their last ten games.

The latest rumor is that Ron Hextall has turned down an offer that would have brought young winger Nail Yakupov to Philadelphia. Take that with a huge grain of salt, because it's straight from Hockeybuzz's Eklund. But in this case, there are some more credible sources that corroborate Eklund's claims.

TSN Insider Pierre LeBrun spoke on Tuesday about several unnamed teams that have gotten into deep talks with the Oilers.

?I will say that the Oilers have gone fairly down the road with a couple of teams on a couple of scenarios that if those teams were willing to see Edmonton?s way on a couple of those things then yeah, those deals could happen, but those teams aren?t willing to do that right now."

Translation: The Oilers asking price has scared off potential suitors who aren't desperate enough to budge just yet.

With every major NHL insider(including McKenzie and Dreger) talking Oilers and Flyers it's not hard to connect the dots. No word on what might have gone the other way on a deal for Yakupov, but you can assume one of either Brayden Schenn or Sean Couturier was in the mix for Edmonton to consider parting with a high value asset like Yakupov.

Would you have liked to see Nail Yakupov in a Flyers jersey?

  3. well, i'm sure u know the old saying, cat - wish in one hand and shit in the other - which one will fill up faster? :)

  4. if you think ND doesnt see any of that money your kidding yourself and technically they arent in a conference. they deserve to play in the toilet bowl but money is the bottom line and they are still a huge draw on a national level. No way do they turn down a bowl game. Also lets not get too crazy calling out Kelly, the defense, Gholson and their 6 suspended players in cluding 5 starters deserve some of the blame. Kelly is an excellent coach and I think they will turn it around next year. that short memory seems to kick in real easy, lets not forget were 2 years removed from a shot at a championship. ND will be fine

I also dont see whats so bad about Couturier, please enlighten me on how hes a lost cause and its time to give up on a big, skilled and very young player that you traded a lot to get him. I dont think 13 goals and 40 pts for a 2nd year player is too bad for a guy who is rarely on the PP

  5. about as good as me asking Santa for Bettman slippers

  6. and since we know u already have a pair which u love dearly, the odds of u asking santa are zero :)

cutter--i said the pot has changed. bf as an example lets say ND played LSU in the Sugar Bowl. The pot was $10 mil. ND got $5 mil and LSU got $2.5 and the SEC got $2.5.

now same scenario(past few yrs) - LSU gets roughly $4 mil, the SEC gets $4 mil and ND gets $2 mil. why? bc bf this current final 4 format for the title all they had to do was finish in the top 10-12 with 9 or more wins to get a major bowl. people were pissed about that.

that was the formula until now with the final 4 etc .

onto kelly-i think he was a good coach but his play calling is suspect and he stood by golson entirely too long. should've pulled him vs ASU. then he plays him vs USC? Why now? And the fact he let Brindza scolded Zaire for a bad hold is poor coaching. If I was Zaire I would've punched Brindza in the mouth ans say "you sucked all year so dont blame me on a 25 yr chip shot!" kelly stood there and did nothing! Screw Brindza!

anyone can coach ND to 5 losses. For all of Kelly's ND success, he sure has a lot of losses too!

and in the big games - Alabama, FSU he is winless. he has beaten ranked teams, but in the spotlight games he hasn't!

in today's world of greed ND will go to a bowl game, but my point is like Bob Davie did - send a message that this team is not worthy of a bowl game after their last month of games! Send a message to the returning team that losing is not acceptable to teams like Northwestern, Louisville, USC and ASU! Send a message that if you wanna quit - you don't play in a bowl!

They were 18 seconds away from being 6-0 and possibly #1 or 2 in the nation. Now they're 7-5 and a laughingstock!

hasnt couts played 3 yrs now? this being his 3rd? for a top 7 pick he's not that good. he's not a scorer. he's a defender. he will never be a shutdown player like zetterberg or other selke finalist. his defense is not as great as people think either. like 99% of the team i dont think he's that good, worth keeping and so damn great!

  9. the eternal pessimist, your starting to sound like a Wings fan that has a Layne Staley avi

  10. Catfish Guest

im not a eternal pessimist. just tired of losing cutter. like ND losing since 1987 without a title. losing since 1975 without a stanley cup. call it whatever you want - winning matters most - losing takes a back seat. 2 sports programs i love haven't won in decades and add the eagles in and they never won a super bowl so im tired of it not being pessimistic.

i mean chip kelly just lost to the freaking rg3 redskins. that should make their fanbase call for his head on a platter like brian kelly's. again winning wins - they win but never the title. so yes i bitch about it.

what is it about losing do you accept so much? u seem to have no problems with kelly this year? or last year. i dont get you at all.

  11. he doesn't accept it. i guess u missed this comment from cutter, cat ;)

  12. Catfish Guest

lulz i don't follow the wings so i have no idea what that sentence even means.

accepting losing is total insane. brian kelly, chip kelly and the flyers do win but not enough. detroit won what 3 cups in the yzerman era and 1 or 2 more without him? if that was the flyers, i could die in peace! so i have no idea why red wings fans complain with their success and hall of famer roster!

  13. lol. following the wings wouldn't help :)

layne staley is not a wing. he was the lead singer of Alice in Chains.
