I swear it looks similar to the offense the Bears ran except they pushed the ball a whole 7 yards downfield from the LOS. lol Did you see the one play they broke down where he didn't even give the uncovered receiver on the right side a look. WTF
One read offense, a lot of the smaller schools run this offense because it is easier to implement with lesser talent they get. He has some raw skills but really hard to figure out how he will translate to the next level.
On a side note that other Josh Rosen the rookie from UCLA looks the part and can get the ball downfield except he seems to focus on one target, Duarte whom declared for the draft this season. Yes, yes I know it's a Bruins QB but the kid can throw.
I like him a lot, looks like he could be the next big thing. Handle himself extremely well as a true Freshman in the Pac 12. He still has two more years before he can even think about leaving, a lot could happen between now and then but he is definitely one to watch.
So aggie, are you saying when the ball is snapped the QB only has like 1 progression? And then he presumably either takes off or throws it away? Hard to imagine running an Offense that way and getting any real production. Or by one read do you mean pre snap maybe? As in they're playing man or zone something like that?
I'm looking for a Bears GM for the first collaborative mock of the off-season - http://live4sportnetwork.com/forumlist/viewtopic.php?id=7931
One read means the QB looks to one side or area, if that isn't open, they usually are told just to take off. It can be successful because they usually spread out the defense creating open lanes. This has become a popular offense to run in college but it is lazy in my opinion. It lets the kids throw it right away or just use their athleticism. Instead of teaching the kids to read defenses, it gives them one simple option or run. It is why QB's suck now as NFL QB's coming out of college because they are asked to do very little. Most of the times the coaches are doing all the work from the sidelines. I know a lot of you don't watch a lot of college football, but you will see the entire team look to the sidelines as the coach signals to run the originally called play or he will make the change for the entire team from the sideline.
Charlie Campbell of Walterfootball (regurgitated by thechicagochronicle.com) reporting Bears are bringing in a guy I've discussed/wrote up as a 2nd rounder, CB William Jackson III from University of Houston. Bears plan to meet personally with him at the combine and perhaps beyond. 6'2, 175 lbs. Speed and excel's in man to man, coming from a 3-4 defense. Needs some weight, preferably up to 195-200 lbs.
Sorry for on and off delays, been an interesting week for me with travel/work. Been listening and keeping an eye on social media and other sites such as walterfootball and cbsucks. During the underwear olympics, errr....combine. The bears have met personally/spent a lot of time watching Christian Hackenberg, Kevin Hogan, and Connor Cook. 2nd round option or beyond for qbs? Today they spent a lot of time with TEs. Particularly Arkansas TE Hunter Henry today. Haven't seen much of him, but he stands 6'6 and 250 lbs. Kid just turned 21 on December 7th. Henry is considered the top TE, and is a projected late 1st/early 2nd rounder. The bears also met with Ohio State Running back Ezikiel Elliot. Also 2nd round projection, possibly 1st depending on the team.
They're looking at the QB's they have a chance at without reaching in the first. There likely will be one or two worthy NFL starters from the group that don't get drafted in the first. I'm cool with taking a shot at one. I think both Elliot and Henry go in the first. I think they're both great prospects and players, but given Chicago's roster, I have no idea why they're talking to either of them. How incensed would everyone be if they took a TE or RB in the first round? Or even the second round, for that matter? Of course, how mad is everyone going to be when they take a recently injured linebacker or defenseman... An interesting quandry...
I read an article where Pace was talking about the QB's in this draft and was talking about the value of the mid-round QB's. I was very happy to hear them say that because I have gone on record as saying I don't like any of these QB's enough to take them in the first round. They remind me of the 2011 draft where after Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert and Jake Locker were taken in the top 10 and neither were worthy of the pick. I liked Carson Wentz, talked about him about midway through the season when I was looking for some mid round value QB picks. I am still astonished at this guys meteoric rise to the top of the draft. He played at a lower level school, only started 27 games at that level so he wasn't even better than the guy who went undrafted and is now in the CFL. This doesn't sound like a top 5 draft pick and on film, I'm sorry but he doesn't look it either. I think he has potential which is why I mentioned him but will need 2 or 3 years to develop. He won't get that if he is a top 5 pick and will fail miserably. I amazed at how smart these NFL guys are but how often they see what they want to see instead of what is the truth. They are so afraid of missing out on the next possible Tom Brady and instead get the next Jamarcus Russell more times than not. Mike Mayock actually compared Wentz to Andrew Luck and has gone all in on this kid. So let me see the second and third day guys, that is where the value is in this draft for QB's in my opinion. Love this kid, he has gone under the radar because he played at a very average Arkansas team but he is a player. I think somebody will end up grabbing him in the first round after taking a closer look at him. Incensed woudn't be the word to describe my feelings on that. They passed on Gurley to take a WR last season and Gurley is and will be, a better player than either of these two. On a side note as a Georgia Bulldog fan, very happy to see Keith Marshall test so well. Goes to show that knee injuries do not end a players career anymore because this kid has run through the gauntlet with them. Good kid who came into Georgia just as highly touted as Todd Gurley but injuries completely derailed him. He could end up being a draft day steal along the lines of former Georgia alum Terrell Davis. Running a 4.29 will put you on a lot of teams radars though. I would not be incensed if they took Jaylon Smith even in the slighest. I love Jaylon Smith and he is easily a top 10 talent in this draft if not top 5 if he was not injured. It would suck to draft a player and have him start the year injured, but unlike White, this guys play on the field at Notre Dame was tremendous and in my opinion, would warrant the risk. I also am very curious to watch Robert Nkemdiche and how far he drops. This guy is a stud on the football field but again, off the field is a tremendous risk. Looks like the Cowboys may have got burned by Randy Gregory but if this kid gets the off the field stuff fixed, someone at the end of the 1st round or early second is going to get a top 5 talent. I wouldn't touch him at number 11 but if he was there in the second, would be hard to pass up. This is one of those times where a face to face interview and how he answers questions is critical because there is no denying this kids talent on the football field.
The only thing that interests me at the underwear olympics this year are the medicals. This year, I'm hearing (sports radio/articles/websites) teams are tightening up their sphincters when it comes to medicals and general backgrounds of new players/potential draftees. Tuned into Boers and Bernstein the other day (because Waddle and Silvy have turned into dogshit meatball blowhards.) Zach Zaidman was saying teams dont want another Manziel type player. Teams also dont want a Kevin White situation, whatever it is (injured before or during workouts and hidden).
WHich, if anyone watching the interviews/press conferences, Robert Nkemdiche and Laremy Tunsil (with Nkemdiche at the time of arrest/drug charge/falling out of hotel window) were grilled to high heaven, and both put on the jesus/family/I learned sob stories. I dont buy it.
Before he fell out of the window, there were off the field concerns about Nkemdiche. I don't buy it either, but if I was a successful team with an ability to take a chance with a first round pick, late in the first (i.e., Broncos, Patriots, Seahawks) it would be hard to pass up on him because if you feel you can get his head on straight, he is a freakish talent on the field.
He has now failed physicals for many teams who have met with him. There is some pretty wide speculation there is nerve damage. This guy may never see a down in the NFL Ian RapoportVerified account @RapSheet Difficult day for #NotreDame LB Jaylon Smith, who had his medicals. Ankle & knee nerve issues, teams believe he's out for 2016 -- at least
If Jerry was still here you know where the Bears would be going with his 1st, but does this mean he should drop off Pace's board not only the first two days, but perhaps off the board entirely? When I read in Jan. source??? perhaps his agent Then I read recently his conflicting explanation It seems to me any team would be taking a huge leap of faith because of the injury, because I agree with Mongo there is a chance he might not ever play a down, but if and when he can play his talent is undeniable it seems a late round selection would still be a risk worth taking. What round might still be worth risking a selection on or do you take him off the board entirely? 5th?
Tuna, I read your original quote of how well the surgery went and how well he was doing which is why I still would considered him at 11. Nerve damage is the big problem and it doesn't sound like the whole knee is recovering well. Marcus Lattimore went through a similar thing and he barely played before finally retiring. I'm taking him of the board, Bears have too many needs to take a flyer with any pick.
With this in mind, I think Pace will be aggressive in free agent Danny Trevathian. Because after Smith, it's Myles Jack and Reggie Ragland. Jack is ferocious, but his knee is in limbo too. Ragland is a thumper, but I'm unsure he's the guy at 11. There will be a Lot of talent there in terms of BPA over Ragland.
^ This is how I've been hoping Free Agency/the draft is approached all along. I'm more than fine with drafting something other than LB at 11, and that can be mitigated by taking advantage of free agency.
