The website I use to review tape, draftbreakdown doesn't have much on Goff in 2015; I think , its got Cook's games against Oregon and WMU, think it will add last weeks. http://draftbreakdown.com/players Goff has games against Texas and San Diego State. Havent watched the Texas game yet. http://draftbreakdown.com/players/jared-goff/
Thanks Patg, I was going to ask you what you used to watch these guys. I watched him on YouTube against Texas this morning. My initial assessment still stands, it is tough to judge with that offense. Arm strength is good, height is good. That offense just doesn't lend itself to reads. They also never go under center. I wish you didn't say Colt Brennan because that is all I see now.
Yeah it freaking sucks, kid doesn't deserve that. Georgia is loaded at RB, I actually think Sony Michel is going to be a better NFL prospect than Chubb. Georgia's QB situation is disgusting, starting a reject from a bad Virginia team is embarrassing. One player standing out this season for UGA is Tim Kimbrough, guy has just been making plays even against Alabama last week.
I don't know about you Patg, but i'm excited for the Utah/Cal game because I want to see how Jared Goff is going to perform. This will be a true test for him. Going to be watching that game very closely.
Well Patg, I watched the entire Cal/Utah game last night and all I saw was Jay Cutler Jr. Jared Goff has the arm talent and the height to be an NFL QB, but appeared to me to be a long way from being NFL ready which doesn't make him a top 10 NFL pick in my book. His offensive line did him no favors, they were downright horrible but with that being said 5 INT's is unacceptable. Did not make good decisions, the offense he runs does not help his case as he never went through any kind of progressions and his reaction to pressure was very poor. My other problem with him is how skinny he is. He has a big frame but I don't think he weighs much over 200 lbs (he is listed at 210 but I think even that is a stretch). He definitely has an NFL arm but the offense didn't show me any NFL passes. I came away even less impressed with him than I was in prior weeks and I wasn't impressed at all. I was actually hoping this game would turn around my opinion. It didn't. I want to see him play UCLA and Stanford, both have good defenses as well like Utah but he has a long way to go. I would tell him to stay in college another year but he needs to get out of this offensive scheme and learn a pro style offense because this system is not helping him develop for the next level.
Didn't see the game last night, Lewis Black was in town. But Goff's game against Utah was put on the draft breakdown website. So I'll be watching that. Saw Wisconsin/Nebraska and I was being driven nuts. 2 teams that are run first with crappy QBs decided to arm it out. At least the refs called a lax game.
Initial thoughts on Goff versus Utah. 1st Quarter: Great throws, an INT that was on the WR letting the ball sail through his hands and bounce on his helmet and lob up in the air. Threw a couple "ducks" or passes that sailed. That can work in College with a Senior, talented WR against a sophmore nickelback. That wont work in the NFL. The TD in man on man coverage was textbook. Put it where his guy could get it and get it comfortably. Defender had no chance. Second INT was forced. His guy on the skinny post was well covered. That tells me he really likes this senior WR Lawler. DB got away with a lot of grab-ass on that play though. 2nd Quarter: Takes what defense gives him. A lot. Utah takes away Lawler downfield and he hits his TE Anderson comfortably in the 5-7 yard range several times. Yay for fundamentals. Good accuracy. Too bad at the NFL level, you cant run 5 WR set shotgun in 5 straight plays in the NFL. Learn how to pump fake. Doesn't fool this DLinemen who's batted 2-3 balls now. Great job identifying Utah's switch/defensive audible 1/2 way through the 2nd. They switched a slow LB onto his TE instead of the nickelback and he identified and took a free 20 yard gain to put them from 3rd and 10 to 1st and goal. Lawler dropped a wide open TD after shredding the D. Not on the QB. Cant tell if there are designed plays to Lawler or if Goff really just likes throwing to him. Needed to throw a fade instead of a pass in the lane of the DB. 3rd INT: Forced where he had no play. Bad decision. Too many WR screens 3rd Quarter: Taking more of what defense gives them. Utah is letting this Lawler guy be only single covered. They have that much faith in their 4 man pass rush. They should. They're beating up the Cal Oline. Granted, doing it with the nickel and dime packages. Would like to see a basic 4-3/3-4 set from Utah. They clearly run a hybrid, but have extra DBs in 70%+ of the plays I've seen. And I'm 1/2 way through the 3rd. I think with LBs in instead of DBs, Goff would be shredding them. Utah is just fantastic fundamentally. I'm very impressed with their ability to give up just enough. 3rd and 10? They'll give up 5 and make the stop. This DE/rush LB Kylie Fitts is having an incredible game. 4th Quarter: Again, still great recognition by Goff in a 4-2-5 shell Utah D when the Nickelback checks off the TE to the Sam LB who clearly cant keep up with him. Takes free 20+ yard gain again. Bad Cal WR fundamentals. Some plays Goff is hung out to dry by shitty efforts. Had a wide open guy on a steak mid 4th quarter wide open. WR stops in the middle of his route, turns, turns again, and watches the ball sail over his head when he should have been where the ball was, walking into the endzone. Good athleticism, but......slide. NFL LBs aren't so forgiving when you trot your way out of bounds after a QB keeper. INT #4: Cal offensive line let the defense walk right by them. Goff mad a dumb throw when he should have taken the sack. On the fumble after INT #4, held onto it too long and the LT couldn't hold the pass rusher. He's trying to hit the home run late in the 4th with 2 minutes left. Defense is giving him time and mid-range routes underneath and he's throwing 20+ yard prayers in outstanding coverage. He has time and all 3 time outs. Stupid fundamentals again with 30 seconds to go again by Cal WRs. Stopping and turning right when the ball is in the air. If he continues straight, this WR has 2 steps on the DB and has plenty of room in the end zone. Overall thoughts: Goff is a definite 1st round pick pending a downright implosion. Does a lot of things right. Does a lot that needs work. 3 of the picks he threw are not on him. Cant blame the QB when the WR lets the ball sail through his hands. Would like to see him more with better weapons on the same page as him. At least 4-5 plays his WRs made my jaw drop. They did a lot of Johnny Knox dumb stuff in terms of route running and general miscommunication.
And after this gigantic write up the bears likely dont have a shot at Goff. Houston looks like they'll be taking him early.
Great write up Patg, I don't see what you are seeing but I won't condemn him for a bad game against a very good team. Has two more big games in my opinion, next week against UCLA and in a few weeks against Stanford, two teams who play good defense. I think he has first round ability but don't like how skinny he looks or the fact that he will have to learn how to play under center and in a pro style offense. The first INT was definitely on the WR but the rest were not good passes. That and the Bears keep winning. Don't forget, Bill O'Brien recruited Christian Hackenberg to Penn St so maybe he will go that way.
Patg, have you heard of Carson Wentz from North Dakota State? I went on a search for some lesser known QB's since I am not very enamored with Goff and Cook and his name keeps popping up. Great size and sounds like he is mobile, haven't seen any film on him yet but he has won back to back National Championships at the I-AA level. Curious if you have watched him at all.
Hackenburg's stock is going down. Way down. Guy's been decked too many times this season. Penn State cant protect this kid. Have not. Used draftbreakdown to watch some of his game against Montana Grizzlies. The problem I have with mobile guys is that they all go through 1 read and if they dont like anything they see they take off. This kid is no exception. Vick at his best in Atlanta maybe conducted 2 reads--but I consider Vick forever an exception to the rule because he wasn't a fullback type runner, he was a flat out track speed athlete to compensate sitting back. This kid taking off at the NFL level wont end well. Nor will he get as astounding protection as he is this game, against another ranked D1-AA team. NDSU protected him in the pocket. A good ILB or OLB playing spy would take this kid's legs out of the game fast at either level. He also stares guys when he already decides he doesn't need to run. Project UDFA that may just do fine in New England or somewhere he'd need absolute protection. This year has a lot of QBs coming out.
Cool website to get a quick glimpse at these guys in actual game play. He looks a bit erratic but has a big arm, runs really well for a kid that big. I think he runs a lot because that is his best option. Obviously at that level, the talent is not there. One thing I did like is that they had him under center in a spread type system, something Goff has never done. So hard to judge these guys, don't envy the scouts at all, really hard to figure how they will translate to the next level.
With quarterbacks I want to see reads and progressions. Lots of college Qbs fail because they only know 1 read because that's all they need. Cook and Goff both have displayed abilities to make multiple reads when necessary. May not always be pretty but that's first round material. I can live without the cannon. I want to know if my quarterback can quickly identify soft spots and changes/audibles and make plays. Not many quarterbacks can and do. That's why we see the quarterback premium. The top 2 can the best. But can it translate?
Few interesting notes from my guy at Walterfootball 1) Lots of teams getting cold on Robert Nkemdiche. Not because of play/talent, because of how stupid he's being off the field partying, people he's tied to, and reports of him trying to be a movie star. Lots of people seeing him being non-committal to taking the next step up. That, and apparently he's got a brother-type situation on par with Derrick Rose. Brother putting lots of things, dumb things, in his ear. 2) Vernon Hargreaves III is a top 5 in many major scouts eyes. For those who dont know, he's a CB from Florida. I'm unimpressed. Hype of Morris Clayborne and Patrick Peterson, player comparison to Joe Hayden of the Cleveland Browns. I haven't seen much of him--but he's not Patrick Peterson. But say--for example--he is. For sake of argument. Would any of you guys and gals take him if you had a top 5 pick? 3) Right now, after Staley and Tunsil (both top 7 LT picks), there is slim pickings for blindside prospects. Conklin from Michigan State right now not thought to be fast enough to transition to LT at the pro level. 4) The bears--from a sun times report are big time scouting Jared Goff. Not many other teams are right now. One scouting director got back to me and said they did some initial tape study of Goff. They had this to say about their early impression, "Goff is a good prospect, but not a top-of-draft worthy right now." 5) No to Jacoby Brissett. Another Bryce Petty. Strong arm, great college QB. Cant do more than one not-very-good read. More thoughts to come. I'm still watching tape on many guys. http://walterfootball.com/thescuttlebutt.php#8wFzDGqdPTSC6JmP.99
No and if Pace does I may actually hunt him down. QB, Offensive or Defensive line, LB That's his only options in my book. Yeah, if that is true, I'm out as well and talent wise, I absolutely love the guy. That's the kind of stuff these GM's know that we don't and should always play a huge factor in my opinion. I don't think the Bears will be bad enough to draft him anyway, even with the above information, he won't make it outside the top 5. I agree 100% with this sentiment. I still don't see any QB right now that is top-of-draft worthy. I will have to see how the prospects play out and how Goff performs against UCLA this week and Stanford in a few weeks. I like his arm, his height and his ability to make the throws but still not sold on his ability to play in a pro style offense. I'm with you there, this draft is feeling more and more like we are stuck with Cutler for at least another year.
While a top 5 pick on a Joe Hayden type isn't ideal----a Patrick Peterson type-talent would be hard to pass depending on what's there. 2nd round is beginning to intrigue me, because now is the time of year we know the top rounders, and we know the 2nd tier level talent of guys. During the next month and a half we'll have a better view. A couple guys have begun to catch my eye in terms of round 2--and that's where I think the 3-4 OLB position can be added to. First is Dadi Nicklas. VT 3-4 Rush LB who is piling up stats and is always around the QB. Guy may be a late 1st due to lack of top tier talent at the position. Second is Jordan Jenkins from Georgia. Leonard Floyd is probably the best 3-4 OLB out there, but this kid is quietly underrated on the GA defense nationally, though probably not to Aggie; who watches him more than I do. 3 sacks doesn't look spectacular in 6-7 games UGA has played, but 12.5 TFL does. Third is a name I've heard recently: Yannick Ngakoue. Maryland is garbage. This kid is leading the nation right now in sacks. There's film of this kid man-handling 2015 top 5 Redskins pick, Brandon Scherff during the Terps/Iowa game last year. He's gotten better. He forces doubles and still beats them. Athletic sideline-to-sideline. Want to see more of him in a non-pass rushing situation though. Needs to get better from what I've seen so far of identifying a flat route. Couple time's he's passed off the flat route TE to the CB who gets run over.
Yes, he has been impressive, he gets to the ball and does so in the backfield. Plays hard all the time, very solid player. Him and Kimbrough have stood out this year. Obviously love Floyd but was disappointed in him against Tennessee as he disappeared somehow against a backup freshman tackle. That is very unusual for him and expect him to play much better next game. Georgia has a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball and I'm disappointed the Jeremy Pruitt hasn't gotten more out of them.
Hey Patg, found another small school QB, Brandon Doughty at Western Kentucky. Heard of him? I had heard of him before but came across him in my search for a QB. Get a good look at his potential on Oct 24th, they play LSU. They did beat Vandy this year and barely loss to Indiana, who hung around with Ohio St. Curious what you thought of him.
