I've written a number of letters albeit mostly to head coaches or ADs regarding athletic/academic grants to players. The thing that you may find is that despite a kid's being at the top of his class and participate in extra-curricular activities they just may not get offered anything in terms of scholarship or even admittance to the top school(s). I'd suggest that you offer something personal about the kid that is away from the standard spiel that all letters like this offer. Talk about maybe an anecdote about the kid that relives something that to you was special and an indication of his character or citizenship. This, in actuality could be a decider in favor of the kid. A lot of department heads including coaches, like to know about the character of their students because they know that after graduation at their school, they are going to reflect their university. Out here, I know, the Stanford and UCLA certainly take this into consideration, as does Pepperdine.

The title of the thread is a joke. Ever read half the things that get said here? I don't see how saying gay or not gay is inappropriate. That's just a little bit silly. My number one model in life has always been fuck you if you can't take a joke. For the record I have no problem with gay men..........so long as they don't use the same bathroom as me. What I especially was repulsed by was what happened in the locker room later where his teammates cheered for him. That truly is a reflection on the Lions and their piss ant head coach.
