When the Cowboys lost Romo in the summer of '16 there were people that expected they would be picking in the Top Ten and targeting a franchise QB in the '17 draft.
Beloved one, In that preseason u could tell the way Prescott played he had a chance to be a solid/decent QB. I’ve seen enough of Jones and Dobbs for my opinion to be they are not the answer for the next Franchise QB for our beloved team. Just my opinion, hopefully I’m wrong.
I don't think anybody has seen enough of Dobbs to make that determination. I'm not saying he's the next Dak Prescott, but he has all the tools. He's extremely intelligent, has the arm strength to make all the throws, has great deep ball accuracy and a ridiculous amount of talent around him. His biggest problem is that he lacks experience and touch on shorter passes. I have to think that with his sole focus on football for the first time in his life (we are talking about a guy who was an academic first in college and has plans to be a rocket scientist after the NFL), and the coaching of NFL quality coaches, he can develop that touch. I'm excited to see what he can do with a year or two in this system. As for the idea of bringing in a veteran like Alex Smith or Kirk Cousins if Ben retires, I could see that as well. Maybe not Cousins because I think his pay demands will be too steep...you can forget the idea of a discount for coming here since he is milking the Redskins for every available penny. However, I hate to disappoint everyone, but I'd be shocked if Ben retires after this season. Win or lose, I think he comes back. He will see the chance to add to his legacy regardless of the result of this season. If he wins it all in February, he'll only be one behind Bradshaw and would likely want to get that 4th ring. If he fails to get the 3rd ring, he will likely want to give it "one more shot" in 2018. I think he might play two or three more years to be honest and I don't see the team moving on from him before he's ready to retire. I think as long as he wants to roll, they roll with him...whether we like it or not!
Here's the reason I have such great trepidation to Ben's playing and decision making (or lack of) this season ... He actually thinks this is his best year ever of "above the shoulders" quarterbacking ... Matthew Marczi, author of the article, as myself, beach and others absolutely disagrees all for the same reason ... (LOL) lack - of - looking for the open receiver, not looking off the safeties... looking at his intended receiver from the git ... etc ... http://www.steelersdepot.com/2017/11/ben-roethlisberger-im-good-season-neck-maybe-ever/ If he truly thinks he's had as good a year as he says ... please, please bring on Josh Dobbs, because this means he won't change his play, he'll see no reason to. I know some in here don't think he has it but between not getting enough reps to determine that and what he has shown in arm strength, legging out plays and learning his position from his mistakes quickly ... I say have at it. At least we have someone at the helm that is dealing in reality and not pie in the sky "I'm even better than I think I am" game jeopardizing attitude. sorry if I've offended, just the way I see it., and worse, apparently, the way he sees it
I've been looking at Josh Dobbs for a very long time and thought he had a future in the NFL. His play in the preseason was encouraging to me because although there were mistakes he bounced back from them and made plays. And he finished the preseason with a very strong game against the Panthers. Maybe there's some confirmation bias going on because I liked him early but as Mano pointed out above there is really no tool this guy doesn't have to be an NFL QB.
I still would feel more comfortable if the Steelers were to draft another QB to take over for Ben when he retires. I really like next years draft class. Draft a first Rd QB and let him compete with Dobbs, then let Landry Jones hit the bricks.
Honestly I think Jones will stick around at least 1 more year. I doubt the Steelers go into the season with no veteran QB. But like most, I'm intrigued by Dobbs and think he should get first crack if Ben hangs it up. And I guess count me in the minority that still believes Ben can still lead this team to the Super Bowl. Yes he makes his big dummy throws, but he when he spreads the ball around he is still effective. True, those types of games have been few and far between so far this year, but I think he will wake up and start being effective.
I still believe Ben can take this team to the SB. I don't understand why the level of his play has gone down. He has the best offense that he has ever played on in his life time. A very good oline, great RB & awesome WRs. The only thing he is missing is his reliable TE, which might be bigger of a deal than we realize. Ben likes his security blanket and Miller his.
In your opinion, when it comes to the toolbox that Dobbs possesses, do you believe it is good enough to make him a future franchise quarterback for the Steelers?
Dobbs has potential, but I don't mind double dipping and making sure we have something in place. Jones ain't about shit, so trade up and get one next draft. There are a lot of QBs in this upcoming draft, no reason we can't land one.
There are a lot of QBs in every draft Gid... Which ones would you say are worthy of trading up and grabbing? This seems like a soup of QBs to me. Not sure there is a franchise QB in this draft, but I'm not in the know like many are.
Baker Mayfield is potentially another Russel Wilson, and the national media hasn't yet caught onto it. If they fall, I'd take a chance on Mason Rudolph or Josh Rosen as well. Sam Darnold is the most overrated player since Jimmy Clausen.
IMHO, if you're looking for the next, great fanchise QB, the LAST places you should look would be USC and Ohio State !!!
With the Texans entering a freefall the Browns will have the ammunition to select any QB or player they want. It's their coaching staff, not their front office, that has them at 0-8 right now.
Nah, its more than that. With Cleveland, its more than the players, coaches, ownership........You could put the New England Patriots team in the Browns uniforms, literally trade all 53-man rosters with one another..........and they would still go 4-12 with all the Pats players. Its NOT any of the aforementioned or any combination.
I'm reading that Todd Haley is on the "hot seat". Anyone Pittsburgh-local hearing more on this? https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/report-todd-haley-is-on-the-hot-seat/ #fireHaley?
Thanks for sharing but that's a hack job by CBS. First, they are basing this on a radio host's "feelings" - not a source of any kind. And then they call Kyle Shanahan the defensive coordinator that Fillipponi refers to in the tweet. Yeah, Shanahan was fired as DC. Terrible journalism.
I wasn't seeing anything else on it and I didn't know it was an "opinion". Thanks for clearing that up.
