The only reason I personally wouldn't be AGAINST offense this season JYD...Offense breeds good defense. If our offense was able to not only win the TOP game, but put points on the board early and often, then it takes the opposition out of their gameplan and makes the defense's job that much easier. But I also want to fortify this young defense, which is why I am pretty open to multiple scenarios this weekend...only 3+ days left and we will all know the strategy...
Absolutely. Any other draft, I wouldn't trade out of that spot without terrific compensation. As everyone has belabored: there just aren't enough "elite" prospects. For the record, I do believe there are several guys with "elite potential" and in this draft, they appear to be available later on. I'm not against it. If we take Jarvis Jones, I won't be terribly upset. To me, the only defensive prospect without a major question mark is Dion Jordan and I don't think he drops out of the Top 3 spots.
I do believe defense will get addressed but to me, I think it can be done in the later rounds. To wit: Ray Horton comes from the Steelers defense where attacking the QB is paramount. The last time the Steelers spent a first round pick on a CB was 1997 (Chad Scott) and that was the 24th selection. And it's not just the Steelers... how many first round starters at CB are there around the League? My quick count was 13 - 16 total. Out of 64 spots. And only three have been Top 6 picks (Joe Haden was #7). If we stay at #6 and make a defensive pick, it will almost certainly be a pass rusher and who then do you take? Jarvis Jones? Barkevious Mingo? Ziggy Ansah?
Man SAS, at first I thought you were just comingng on here to try and get the highest(or lowest) negative feedback on the entire site....then you all of a sudden are making some sense. Did someone get you hooked on Joebees or something?
As a prophet, you should know that "you reap what you sow". Besides . . . we thought you didn't care what we thought.
That logic is so incredibily flawed it's laughable!!! Out of 32 starting QB 12 have been taken in the top 5 (out of those twelve you have Sanchez, A. Smith, C Palmer) Only TWO have won a S.B. (P. Manning, E. Manning)... The avg draft position is 35th overall, so we shouldn't even draft a QB lower than 35th overall using the same logic! If you think ("you" being a GM in charge of said franchise) thinks said player is the best player on the board and is a position of need... you draft him!! You don't say, hmmm... only x amount of players at this position have been drafted at this point in the draft, I should go with player B!
Well, like most prophets, the message isn't always well-received in the time it's given. I don't. Could be I was actually being genuine.
Actually... there's nothing *logical* about anything you just typed. It made almost no sense. And worse, your statistical "analysis" damns your own argument. 25% of starting NFL corners are first round picks. 80% of starting NFL quarterbacks are first round picks. Ergo, QB > CB. By your own analysis, you've proven that we need to spend a first round pick on another QB because Weeden is bad but we already have a very good starting LCB in Joe Haden. I agree completely. And we have Mike Lombardi in his press conference saying he thinks Xavier Rhodes is a better prospect than Dee Milliner. We have Joe Banner saying he prefers rush linebackers to cornerbacks. We have a defensive coordinator who comes from a school of thought that routinely devalues cornerbacks. Dee Milliner is a good CB prospect. He's not Top 5 in this draft and in any year's previous draft, he's probably not Top 15. I'm not telling you this because I have some grudge against Milliner... I'm telling you this because it's the truth. We're not taking him at #6. If you want to talk rush linebacker, I'm all ears. Trade down and get another CB? Go for it. Heck... move down and get Chance Warmack. It's a terrible, soul-crushing blow but at least I can say there's more evidence we'd take him than another Top 10 selection spent on a cornerback.
Stopper... I'm not all that jazzed about the idea, but I think it's the most logical move for the team. Honestly, I still favor a playmaker at WR or LB with that top pick. Manuel probably doesn't have the chops to start Day 1 for Cleveland, but he won't have to. We already have an incumbent who, despite being awful, has survived the regime change so far. BUT... this regime owes nothing to him more than a trial run. There's only two outcomes: Either Weeden succeeds in a new offensive system working against (depending on who you talk to): a lack of playmakers, the sophomore slump and the difficultly of working in a third offensive system in as many seasons. Or... Weeden fails and the new regime needs an answer at QB. Does it make more sense to grab a guy now and begin working him into the system or wait and see if a 4-12 record puts you in the running for a top guy? We know Aaron Murray will be in the Top 3 next season, but who else? In a best-case scenario, Weeden actually makes progress but that doesn't change the fact he's 30 years old, nine years older than his counterparts from the 2012 draft and realistically only has another three to five years at best to play.
Sorry Guys. Been away for quite some time. I went to CBS and the discussion boards are gone! Not sure how I remembered this website but I recall seeing it at some point in time. Anyway, has the draft started yet? lol I get so damn antsy this time of year it's all I think about! I am reading that there is a smear campaign against Milliner which may or may not have an effect on his draft position. I am a little scared of his health. With that being said, even if Milliner is still there at #6 I think the Brownies still trade down a few spots and pick up a 2nd rounder. I think the defensive talent in this years draft is huge. I would love for them to go defense with their 1st 2 picks. My opinion is also to give Weeden another shot with this new offense. If he doesn't show improvment, pick a QB up next year. I am anxiously waiting... crossing my fingers... and holding my breath.
Bux4Life - Welcome to Mud-N-Cleats! If there is anything we can do to help make your time here more enjoyable just let us know and we will try to accommodate you as quickly as possible.
Yo BUX, glad you made it over Stop in the new DPL and check out the digs, Duff's busy brewin up a batch of his special brew just for the draft.
Hey Crex... Depending upon what Lombardi and Banner decide to do on Thurs Night, I just might need quite a bite of the hard stuff, so tell Duff to make it strong (and make ALOT!)
Trading down is what I'd like us to do. We can get a guard a little later on. I'd draft Jarvis Jones if hes still there or Xavier Rhodes if hes still there depending how far we moved back.
I definitely like Rhodes or Trufant at DB. Jarvis Jones might not be a bad pick, I think he will go some time toward the end of the 1st round.
Hate to be Dudley Downer once again here, but... Another classic case of skewing numbers to an argument... You have roughly 64 starting CBs per year, some have more depending on scheme, but we will stick with the traditional (2) CBs.. The average useable career of a starting CB is also around 9 years(drafted age 21, MOST good CBs can last until around the age of 30 before being put out to pasture, I call this my "useable age")...so you would have to draft 7 CBs in the first round every year in order to fill the needs of the 32 teams. The QB on the other hand has as stated, 32 starters per year, and an average useable career of around 13 years..(again, drafted at 21 and put out to pasture at around 34)...So you only need to draft 2.5 QBs per year in the first round to accommodate the needs. Which is more realistic? Finding 3 QBs to draft(which seems to happen nearly every year) or finding 7 CBs? I don't know of any draft where 22% of the draft picks were spent on the CB position. So obviously, they will need to spend more picks later in the draft to fulfill these needs.
?Que? Spoiler For the record, I had more prepared but in order to wade through that "logic" and disprove every point I was eclipsing more than a page of data and facts. I got to the end of it and realized... I don't even know what the heck you're trying to prove in your statement, Irish.
With the #6 overall pick, the Cleveland Browns select... Spoiler Lane Johnson, offensive tackle Oklahoma ... bet'cha didn't see that one coming?
