I think there will be two player trades involving Browns players(obviously Weeden being one), the other being Ahtyba Rubin for a 2nd round draft pick to the Oakland Raiders acquired with a trade down out of the #3 spot in the draft... I will elaborate with my mock draft coming up shortly...
An off-season happens, and I find that the most informative people around have been displaced to a new site.... Oh well, just gonna pick up here and roll with it. I have a lot of catching up to do before I go out with a large group of friends tonight to watch the draft, but my quick, mostly uninformed $0.02 is this: No QB. I don't say that because I'm a Geno Smith hater either... I actually think he'd improve our line immediately just by his quickness and ability to find slot receivers etc.... but I just don't want to reach for a QB at this time, and I also think we have someone who is serviceable once he gets the weapons. With that said, I'd like to see us pick up a WR in Free Agency (not big on Bess though) and I think the focus on the draft HAS to be defense. I think CB is the first target, maybe safety after that. Much like a WR or QB will improve the O-Line's effectiveness, if we could get some better downfield coverage, our D-Line will be much more productive. The biggest question mark going forward though, for me at least, is how are we going to win games without our biggest weapon... Phil Dawson.
Stopper... Actually, I see it being a big class for QBs. You've got a guarnteed: Aaron Murray (#1 overall pick), Tahj Boyd, Zach Mettenberger, A.J. McCarron. Then potentially: Teddy Bridgewater (#2 overall pick), Jeff Driskel, Johnny Manziel. But the issue is what you alluded to in your previous post -- we waste this season just like Holmgren did in 2010 and it puts us another year behind in the development of the other players. SAS, I know u cant think Manziel, Driskell and Zettenberger are NFL caliber QB's. Murray is a lock, but probably need #1 pick. Boyd is not a franchise type QB and McCarron is debatable as far as franchise type QB. If Bridgewater goes #2, the NFL should b embarrassed.
I don't see a problem here. Although the reports (if true) insist we're moving up to #3 and targeting a pass rusher. I can't imagine how it would be Ansah, it almost has to be Jordan... which means the Browns are assuming Fisher and Joeckel are the first two off the board. Then there's also reports that it's almost a done deal we move a mid-round pick for Davone Bess. We're going to have to start moving some players because we simply don't have the picks to accommodate both of these moves.
I don't think much of Manziel and McCarron as NFL QBs, that's true. With Mettenberger, Dirskell and Boyd you're at least getting prototypical size as well as something else to work with -- strong arm, mobility, etc. Again... not saying they're Top 10 choices, but I would expect to see four QBs gone in Round 1 next season. No love for Teddy Bridgewater? I think that dude's incredible considering his age.
i dont think Murray is worth the top pick........yet. if he has a great year and goes unbeaten, then i will not mind, but if he has a similar year to last year, then i think he's a 2nd round pick. i do like Boyd (if he improves), i think Bridgewater is the guy to get and Manziel could be nice and hopefully Driskel explodes like i thought he would. as for the 6th pick, i could see them go anywhere with this. maybe a trade back to get a 2nd round pick which they could then trade to the Patroits for Ryan Mallett, draft Geno Smith or the best player or trade back and draft Geno or the best player. as of now i will say they go after a playmaking Tight End or Wide Reciever, but the Browns are a hard team to predict right now.
I honestly cant figure out what the best direction for us to go is. The more and more I think about it all i wanna do is punch Mike holmgren in the face for drafting a 50 yr old QB in the 1st round. Who the hell does that?? I guess im hoping for a trade down and grabbin a corner or saftey and EJ manuel. or Dion Jordan or EZ anash. Or a trade way down and get robert woods and tyler eifert or ertz or just be the Factory of sadness and take geno at 6, ill be a rich man cause ill bet the house every game agianst Cleveland. Then maybe ill be laughing with everyone instead or punching holes in the drywall. I got an idea, trade weedon to Shitmur and the Eagles for Nick Foles. Shurmur actually has a job hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ahahahahahahahahah
Regarding Smith's talent alone, I think he is the guy most likely to be a franchise QB out of all available QB's. I've seen guys like Matt Scott suggested, and I see those as wasted picks. I'd rather they draft Smith at #6 than Matt Scott anywhere - at least the former gives them a direction. That said, I've never understood the attitutde of "1 year and done" at QB. If you've determined the kid isn't good enough after one year, shouldn't you have been able to determine that before you drafted him? Young players should be given time for a reason - if we give WR's time, why not QB, a much harder position to play well immediately at the NFL level? If they feel Smith is their guy, they should go after him. They should not do so, however, if they're drafting a QB for the sake of it. I won't be upset with Smith being the pick because I have hope that they feel he's the guy to QB this team for years to come. If they even plan to draft a QB in the first three rounds next year after selecting Smith, they should be fired.
DL... I think that's the point with Weeden. Honestly, can anyone with a straight face say that any other NFL team would draft a 29 year old failed pitcher who's skill set (immobile, tall, strong arm) is diametrically opposed to the cerebral, verbiage-rich timing WCO system being run? And then to add that they take him in THE FIRST ROUND! Then, add to that the regime who drafted him failed in every imaginable way and is no longer around, leaving the new regime tied down with a now 30 year old QB moving to his third offensive system in as many years. On top of that, add to that our new owner is facing Federal fraud charges (and they seem pretty solid). He's a black-eye for the team and the NFL as a whole. He (like most rich people) will probably avoid jail time, but it's a possibility. Either way, the NFL could ask him to step down and then there's a chance we need a new owner -- which could also (potentially) involve more F/O turnover. It's a really, really crummy situation.
SAS, not sure how much u watch Florida football, but Driskell is AWFUL......Bridgewater is a decent QB, but I cant see a team drooling over him.
Hell fire! I wait 362 days every year for this night and have been dealing with a migrane all day... The Browns had their guy and took him...I'm happy...
Still like Milliner...despite the "injury" reports that came out this week, he only missed one game in his college career and could have played in that one... But what better way to help out a deficient defensive backfield than to have relentless pressure on the QB...I think the Browns are set up to do just that... Once again, I have to ask; Who the hell invited stopper over here?
i can handle stopper better than i can Rubu . if that annoying dirt bag comes around i might go postal . we need a ignore button .
i like the pick . i would have rather had Millner .if the front 7 doesent get to the QB we are in big trouble .need a cb / safety . te / guard . Sheard may be on the trading block after the Mingo pick ?
I just dont see Mingo applying that pressure ur talking bout...the guy only had 4 1 /2 sacks in college last yr.
He shows up on tape double teamed a lot but it is a concern. Its the Dontari Poe question, why does a player have tons of physical intangibles but low stats to back it? I like the pick though, I thought Jordan would be there but Mingo would be the next best young/field fast player available to fit the mold of what Ray Horton will want to do on defense.
