There isn't anything wrong with any of this...As I said before, it's all personal opinions, but if you want to "put it out there", you also have to accept the criticism if there is any.
2 is several when he was the 2nd non-QB taken. And you are wrong about Browns bias. It's one of those things I get accused of because I don't like the make up of your team. I have commented on how they suck for certain reasons, mainly because of QB. I wish them luck but I am not gonna pretend to like stuff to be nice. The reason I even comment on the Browns is because I want them to do better and actually get people I don't think are ass (and they have been for the most part). I even say it about those players before the Browns draft them. But your love for the Browns and defense mechanism against any criticism blinds you to that. At that point it's only because they are Browns and I don't like them. As I've said about Mayfiled, picking the best option at #1 is great, but there are factors in my rnakings that are clear enough if you read the rankings and my explanation of how I ranked them in this thread and to TD elsewhere. This will make you pissed but, for context, if they took Josh Allen I was gonna put them 3rd or 4th last.
Agreed, it's personal bias on the player rankings..but studying every team and KNOWING their real needs, as opposed to looking up their needs on a website like WalterFootball who is rarely up to date, take that bias and skews it even more. If the case of the Browns. If you have #1 CB ranked #4 overall on your board, #1 DE ranked #3 on your board, points wise, they are nearly identical... You look at your roster.. You have Myles Garrett the 2017 #1 overall draft pick that showed a lot of promise in his 11 games played his rookie season. You have on the other side Emmanuel Ogbah, #32 overall draft pick in the 2016 draft, who has also shown a lot in his short two years as a pro. CB room....basically empty...They have backups playing prominent roles, it is rebuild time for that position on this team. So, is it really a misuse of assets to take the CB who will show the most improvement to the team? I admit, at first I was thinking Chubb was automatic...but doing evaluation after the fact, Ward makes so much more sense.
I am fine with that. What I am arguing is what the criticism is about and a misconceptions on my ranking system and that it's about bias vs certain teams. If I ranked them how I would have a few years ago the Browns would have been in the top half easily, but I felt that was lazy and changed it up to what I have now to be about perception of value. Will I have what appears to be contradictions to that? Heck ya. I've been fighting these rankings since I started them because comparing one team to another sometimes it feels like a top 10 team is worse than a bottom 10 team but when I look at it at another angle they top every other team above them. I actually had the Titans near the bottom originally before having them where I have them now. I expected and welcome criticism, for the right reasons. And darn right I could and likely will be wrong as hell on a bunch of these. I remember most people had Seattle's historical draft as one of the worst that year. Almost everyone was dead wrong.
For the record, I'm not pissed...I could care less about a rankings, I just like writing. So, I give my opinions on them when it pertains to something I care about. I don't think your an ass because of them...I don't take them personal, or hold it against you. But, I don't think you truly understand the team, roster or where they are moving towards either based on a 1-31 record recently. I think a lot of people will be surprised because of all the off season moves, not because of the 2018 draft only. To me, the 2018 record will be more influenced by the veteran replacements in backup positions than any draft pick made. They didn't have any depth to speak of and that is what caused their poor record...along with bad QB play as you mentioned. This draft will be best reflected 3 years from now...I do think it is ironic that the one player you criticize the most, Denzel Ward, imho will have the largest immediate impact on this team. I believe he will have a much larger impact than Chub could have because of the veterans that would be in front of Chubb.
Walter can suck me off. I make fun of his needs and reasoning regularly. Lately I've just kept it to private convos with Tim and RT. I definitely like Ward still. Make no mistake. I would have loved to see them go Chubb and then take a CB early 2nd. If for example they went Mayfield, Chubb, Hernandez, Josh Jackson then I likely give them a top 5 grade. No definitely.
It was a good offseason. I think Ward will do well and I hope the 2+ round picks pan out. They obviously worry me. But the Browns took a big step forward. I don't know how many they'll win this year thanks to growing pains but it will be more than a couple IMO. 3 years from now is a good realistic expectation to see good-great returns.
Not to keep harping, but again, Hernandez doesn't help this team in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. They have Joel Bitonio(signed through 2023) and Kevin Zeitler (signed through 2022), he would NOT beat either of them out this year, or coming years, his rookie contract would run out in 2021. He is NOT an OT, so taking him would have been a huge waste of assets. (edit) they are using Austin Corbett at OT, specifically, he is learning LT currently.
I'd move Bitonio outside, or even if it was a tackle I'm higher on Connor Williams than most for example, and as a tackle, not guard.
He still hasn’t finished guys. You’re Browns may move up or down a few spots by the time he completes this.
LOL. I will do a final scrubbing at the end but odds are the bottom is pretty set. I have the rankings on paper, I just need to get these write-ups out and I don't want to post them without the explanations.
Bitonio is too valuable right where he is. He is a top 5-10 LG in the NFL, don't mess with a position that is actually on the plus side with the hopes that a replacement will be adequate. Fix the position that needs fixed.
I do think Bitonio could easily play LT and do it well. I think it was discussed by the Browns media at least before the draft as well. Corbett is being tried at LT but if it doesn't work I can see him and Joel swapping. I'm sure it was at least a scenario discussed by the Browns before the draft, even if it was dismissed.
I can't disagree with that...They both played LT at Nevada and Bitonio is the more athletic of the two...I just don't want to deplete Bitonio's skill set that he has cultivated in the pros.
Fair enough. Connor Williams was my other option for them, at OT. I had Hernandez a bit higher on "my Browns" board because of Bitonio though.
From what I hear, Hue Jackson is trying a different plan this year. He is using silly string. This is innovation to the 10th power. Go Hue!
Corbett took all the snaps at LT in the rookie mini camp last weekend...But yes, Shon Coleman has first dibs on LT if he can hold off everyone else, that is indeed the plan. He obviously has more experience than Corbett and that was his best position in college and where he would naturally fit in. He has struggled from the right side, but that isn't unusual. I just hope there is someone on this roster that can end the year mid-league or higher in the LT rankings..If that happens, it is a win for this team. I don't expect anyone to just step in and BE Joe Thomas, I just want someone to be competent.
Yes, and I hear Chucky went out and bought a new scalpel to motivate the masses. Anyone that doesn't fall in line: Spoiler: Oakland Raiders are Child's Play in 2018
The Falcons have signed DT Terrell McClain. The big knock that several national writers have had against Atlanta's draft was that they didn't get an instant starter at DT, instead waiting until round three and taking Deadrin Senat. (SI's Andy Benoit, for example, knocked Atlanta's grade down to C+ solely for this reason. Only 3 teams received lower grades - Indianapolis, Seattle and Houston.) But the hole at DT was so obvious that you just knew a significant free agent signing or a trade would be coming before the season began. Now they have Grady Jarrett, McClain, Jack Crawford, Senat, three prospects competing to win a potential fifth depth spot, and an offensive lineman (Ben Garland) who also plays DT when needed. If no one gets hurt, the group is set.
