Or players part of a union taking the owners sides in a money dispute because they are jealous or selfish. Holding out can be selfish but getting tagged twice is a CBA issue you stand behind your fellow union member on.
During the preseason, fans were extremely concerned about the helmet to the head rule changes in the secondary. I said once the season started those calls would not be called as much. And for the games I have seen, I’ve been right. However, the other new rule has been called more and more and it’s approaching the ludicrous stage at this point of the young season. That rule is the roughing the QB by landing with all the defender’s weight on the QB. After seeing approximately 2 calls a week (which is a lot because typically I only watch 2 games at most a week) where a defender makes a great play and sacks the quarterback only to have yellow flag land next to them giving the offense new life. Clay Mathews and Crawford from the Cowboys made textbook tackles today and were flagged for unnecessary roughness. I know these athletes are good, but damn even they can’t beat the laws of physics. I really don’t know how the league expects a defender to sack a QB anymore. Blows to the head? Totally in favor of penalizing. Coming in low and getting a flag even though you were pushed into the guy? A little fuzzier, but ok, I can still get on board with that. Getting penalized for putting a shoulder pad into the chest plate of a QB and running through the tackle while the QB is still holding the ball? That is ridiculous. It sucks Aaron Rodgers got hurt last season, but it’s still football and injuries happen. Just because injuries happen does not mean the defense can suddenly stop and float to the side while sacking a QB.
Clay Mathews has become the new James Harrison of the league. They are going to flag him week after week to make a point. A piss poor one at this point. If I'm clay being they are going to flag you anyways hit them harder maybe you will knock them out of the game for your troubles.
LOL, James Harrison was making dirty plays, when there were few rules protecting the QB. He would have never survived in a league with these pansy ass rules. Matthews two flags were iffy at best. The first one was because of the "lift", this second one..I honestly don't know what else he could have done, Smith actually inadvertently has Matthews right arm and pulls him on top as they are going to the ground. Without allowing for replay, I don't know how the refs call the penalty either though. If they miss one, they will get chastised in the media (see Aaron Rodgers earlier miss on Payne for the suplex), if they call one that looks to the naked eye as landing on the QB, but there are extenuating circumstances why, they will also get chastised. This is a no win for anyone... There will be games that are directly determined by bad calls (See Browns/Steelers week one). When it becomes a pattern of deciding games, then it will be addressed. Short of giving QBs red jerseys and calling them down by the two hand touch rule, I don't know what the NFL is expecting to gain with this latest failure of a rule. I understand protecting the most valuable asset the league has, the NFL franchise QB, but man it is ridiculous. The new rule is going to easily give the QB an extra second to get rid of the ball because pass rushers are going to have to adjust angle to make an unorthodox tackle in order to avoid a flag. We are talking the difference between a great pass rush (under 2.5 seconds), a good pass rush (under 3.5 seconds), and now giving the QB up to around 4.5 seconds to make a pass...the passing numbers will be astronomical. I will make a bold prediction under the Random Opinions Thread... If the rules keep going the way they are for QBs, Baker Mayfield will end up breaking every QB record. I'm not saying he is a better QB than Brady and/or Manning (who had similar rules changes that allowed them to break all the records of the old school QBs), but he will be so protected that with his accuracy, he will exploit the extra time given, as well as avoiding injuries that past QBs couldn't because of the safety rules. We are in a new era, the passing game will take on new life as teams adjust to exploit the rules.
I hate these flags and I hate the new rule....but the sack Matthews had yesterday was too easy to flag. He drove the QB to the ground and let all his weight fall right on top of him...that's exactly what the new rule say not to do. I thought last weeks flag on Matthews was wrong because he didn't drop all his weight on the QB. But this one they called right according to the new, really stupid rule. What it shows is poor intelligence on Matthews part. You know what they're looking for...you know what they will flag...and you did it anyway. Matthews could have just wrapped Smith in a bear hug until the ref blew the whistle. He could have wrapped him up at the waist and sidewinded him to the ground. He could have done like 10 different things and not gotten the flag. Instead he went in idiot, caveman steroid style and got the flag for it and then yet again threw up his hands in disbelief.
Once they decided to make an example of James not all his hits were flag worthy A rule so stupid even the QBs its protecting are calling it stupid
Then they don't call Vince Williams for sacking the QB about 3 seconds after the play was blown dead multiple times due to a false start. The league is a joke.
Good teams bounce back and regroup, fix mistakes. The Vikings laid an egg at home... time Thursday to see what their made of. The Rams look real good too. Big, BIG, Big freekin test coming up for Minnesota.
The Rams are one of only three undefeated teams in the NFL through week 3. But . . . keep in mind . . . their opponents so far this year (against teams not named the Rams) are 1-6-0.
a little too early to crown the best team after week 3. i wait till the start of week 9 for pretenders fall off and the cream rises to the top.
Well hell, Cat... we are 3 weeks in and somebody has to be the best and somebody has to be the worst... right now the record speaks for itself.
And it not just that the Rams are 3-0, it's the fashion in which they have gotten there. The Rams rock.

ok but like it was pointed out their opponents record is like beating on the girl scouts of america. beat a good team and come talk to me.
i liked your Vikings in the preseason and had them in the NFC Championship game. What's going on with the Vikings ? Forget the Rams! lol.
