Definitely. 58 yards per game provided you play 17 games isn't all that great really. Not sure what the new standard needs to be. 1400 yards for receivers? 1600 all purpose yards for RBs? It's an interesting discussion.
1,000 yards / 12 games = 83 yards per game 83 yards per game X 17 games = 1,400 (ish) yards per season. Why not just go with 83 yards per game?
26 wrs broke 1000 last year with 2 more right on the cusp of doing so. This is up from 18 the prior year where there were 16 games (5 more were really close that year). So 1000 receiving yards really hasnt been that special for ahwile. In 2021 9 players broke 1200 with 2 more 1 catch away from breaking it. 2020 had 8 go over the 1200 mark. This season we already have 3 over the 1200 mark and Davate Adams will break it next game (needs 24 yards). To make it special you are probabbly looking at 1500 yards recieving.
I've been thinking about this for a while, but it's just about the hype now, more than anything. Marketing departments need stats to brag about. So the landmark isn't going anywhere, even if we add new ones to celebrate (which we should).
The Steelers became the first team since the NFL Merger to win 500 games. The next closest is the Cowboys at 479. For anyone that doesn’t know the merger was 1970.
The 1000 yards is a good standard for rookie players, but after you are established I would say 1400 in today’s 17 game schedule.
It's always about the money which is why it might change. Lots of players put bonuses into their contracts which of course many of them used 1000 yards as a mark teams are going to change that in order to prevent the bonus from kicking in and thus counting against the cap.
I'd would trade regular season wins for more Superbowl wins. Don't get me wrong 500 regular the season wins is impressive but the Patriots have 6 SB wins despite having 28 less regular season wins, the cowboys have 5 trailing by 1 with 20 less regular season wins. 49ers have 5 with 51 less wins. The fact so many of my fellow Steelers fans are running around thumping their chest about 500 regular season wins shows how the standard is no longer championships in Steelers Nation it's about did we win the regular season. (Yes this is my humble opinion and yes it can be seen as a get off my lawn type opinion but it used tobe Superbowl or bust for the Steelers. Tomlin will get into the hall of fame but I think when you look back at his career and the talent he had for most of it the lack of championships has to be considered a colossal failure.). Heck Dean Smith is on that list as well and all he did when he retired was when the most games (passed since then of course) but 2 championships despite all the talent he had.
The Steelers have 6 SB championships, They might have won more if the patriots weren’t busy winning their 6 under Belichick. We lost 3 AFCCGs to them. The Packers have more wins in NFL history than any other team but only have a couple of more championships than the Steelers. NFL championships are very hard to come by. Seeing how 6 is the most SBs won I would say that the Steelers are doing really good in that department. 500 wins since 1970 is a big deal, if they weren’t that good over the last 52 years they probably wouldn’t have 6 titles. The teams with the top number of championships in that time are also the top teams in number of regular season wins during that time. You can’t have more championships without having lots of winning seasons. Injuries derailed a lot of great teams from winning championships but didn’t stop them from getting winning seasons.
The other change to consider is that in 2008 the league changed the rules to make the games shorter. Before, going out of bounds stopped the clock until the ball was snapped. Now it only stops the clock in the last two minutes of the second quarter or the last five minutes of the fourth quarter. So... less offensive snaps per game = adjust downwards, maybe to something like 1300 or even 1250.
Fair, but I have to imagine the players' association / agents would ask for concessions in return. And even then, those internal negotiations are separate from what marketing teams are going to hype up.
Really that tired defense that the reason the Steelers didnt win more is because of Brady and Belichick. Yes we lost tomthem three times in the afc championship. We also lost to the Titians, Jaguars (twice), Broncos(twice), Ravens, and Browns 7 times we lost to a team not named the Patriots teams that did not have Brady or Belichick. Surley all those team had HOF coaches with HOF QBS that are also in the G.O.A.T. conversation. Lets go check Fisher & McNair uh-oh maybe the next one Del Rio & Garrard, Fox & Tebow nope and NOPE. Moving on to the next pair Flacco and Harbaughas much as Steelers fans dont want to hear it Harbaugh probabbly does make the hall but Flaccos only getting in with paid admission. Kubiak & Manning not likely for kubiak and a yes on manning both in the HOF and Goat conversation but at least he is retired right. Doug Marrone and Blake Bortals ummmm next. Stefanski and Baker Mayfield oh my well acording to Burowns fans that year he was canton bound but they changed their minds quickly and traded for a man with more baggage than the Denver airport. Wow it seems not just the busy Patriots have sent us on our way (nevermind the fact that in one of those games Brady was knocked out and drew bledsoe broke it off in my beloved Steelers). Well at least with tom gone to Tampa Bay there is no longer a combination of Coach and QB that could derail our Steelers from #7. Oh wait it seems I forgot one pair that knocked us out Ried and Mahomes of the chiefs. Wow guess we have our excuse for the next decade then. Oh IF the Patriots and Brady are the reason we dont have more Superbowls i guess its a good thing Brady got hurt so we could win #6 and that the Broncos knocked them out our way on #5 Since 2000 the giants are 17th in regular season wins and they have 2 championships just like the Steelers. [
You totally missed the point about losing to the patriots, those were good Steelers teams that could have won the SB if they got by the patriots. Those other seasons you are talking about we weren’t going to win the SB those seasons.
So we lose to the broncos Lose to the pats Lose to jags In a 3 year span but the only one we were going to win the superbowl in was the one where the pats knocked us out
Our team was injured to the point of not being capable those other seasons. The year we lost to the pats we were just outcoached by Belichick.
Didn't know where to put this. So I'll do it here. A California high school won its state championship in an improbable fashion. Granada Hills Charter High School has managed to go 12-2 on the season and earn a spot in the 4-A state championship football bowl game. Winning 12 games is certainly an accomplishment, but the unusual part was that the team did not complete a pass during the entire season. The team from the Granada Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles opted to run a particular old-school style of offense, which almost completely ignored the vertical passing game. Granada Hills only attempted seven passes over the course of the season. If this weren't on Fox News, I'd never have believed it.
More evidence that those top five pick can't-miss phenom franchise QB mega-studs are overrated... when the Falcons play the Saints next weekend, the #1 and #2 overall picks from the 2015 draft will be on the bench, both having lost their starting jobs over the course of the season. #1 overall Jameis Winston is now backing up Andy Dalton (2nd round, 2011) while #2 overall Marcus Mariota is giving way to third round rookie Desmond Ridder.
