NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that this week Shorts signed a new contract with a pay cut to secure his roster spot, per a source who has seen the deal. Shorts was scheduled to make $2.75 million in 2016. He'll now earn a $1.2 million base salary with a $500,000 roster bonus. He also has a chance to earn $250,000 total in per-game roster bonuses ($16,625 for each game he's active), per Rapoport. Depending on how many of those bonuses Shorts earns, his pay cut will land between $1 million and $800,000.
Frustrated Wilkerson uncertain if he'll report for Jets camp LINDEN, N.J. (AP) ? Uncertainty is the only sure thing for Muhammad Wilkerson these days. The New York Jets' disgruntled defensive end is in a contract dispute with the team, unsure if he'll ever get the long-term extension he desires from the Jets. "Yeah, I'm surprised, frustrated," Wilkerson said Friday night, reiterating his comments to the New York Post in a story published Thursday. "But what can I do? What can I say?" Wilkerson had a career-high 12 sacks last season and was selected for his first Pro Bowl, but was unable to play after breaking his right leg in the Jets' season finale at Buffalo. He has been asking for a new deal for the past two years, but Wilkerson received the franchise tag this offseason and has yet to sign his tender, which is worth $15.7 million. "It's out there and I feel like I deserve it, you know, a deal," Wilkerson said at his Strikes For Scholarships charity bowling event at Jersey Lanes. "I understand it's a business, but my focus right now is just rehabbing the leg and getting ready."
Flacco was at Pitt but transferred to Delaware because he wasn't going to start....Bad mistake by Wannstadt when he was there? I never liked him as he could never get a a top recruit.....Glad he's gone!
49ers sign third-round pick Will Redmond SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) ? The San Francisco 49ers signed third-round pick Will Redmond to a four-year contract Thursday. The former Mississippi State cornerback was selected 68th overall. Redmond tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during practice in October, but the 49ers were willing to take the chance on him in the draft. Redmond appeared in 27 games for the Bulldogs over three seasons, finishing with five interceptions, 99 tackles and 13 passes defensed.
Titans' Morgan wants NFL to study medical marijuana NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Tennessee Titans linebacker Derrick Morgan wants the NFL to study how medical marijuana could help players. Morgan said Thursday on Twitter that "it's time for the @NFL to take an HONEST look into the potential medical benefits of Cannabis for its players." He tweeted after telling Yahoo that he wants the league to conduct more research on marijuana, particularly on how it could help treat or prevent chronic traumatic encephalopathy (ehn-sehf-uh-LAH'-thuh-pee), or CTE. His comments follow offensive tackle Eugene Monroe's recommendation that the NFL stop testing players for marijuana. Monroe was released last week by the Baltimore Ravens. The NFL tests players for marijuana between April 20 and Aug. 9. Players who test positive for the first time enter the league's substance abuse program. Additional positive tests result in stiffer penalties. *HIGH* *HIGH* *HIGH* *HIGH*
Lawyer seeks plea deal, doubts Manziel can stay clean DALLAS (AP) ? An attorney handling Johnny Manziel's domestic violence case expressed doubts about the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback's ability to stay clean and said he was given a receipt that shows Manziel may have spent more than $1,000 at a drug paraphernalia store just 15 hours after he was involved in a hit-and-run crash, according to a lengthy text message accidentally sent to The Associated Press. Defense attorney Bob Hinton's text indicated Manziel's legal team was seeking a plea deal with prosecutors, but suggested that could be tricky. "Heaven help us if one of the conditions is to pee in a bottle," the attorney wrote. Hinton also wrote that he had been emailed a "heads up" receipt "which purports to reflect" that Manziel made a purchase of $1,018.77 at a Gas Pipe store at 12:03 p.m. on Tuesday, less than a day after his crash. A manager at a Gas Pipe location not far from where Manziel's crash was reported declined to discuss whether he bought anything there. A sign in the store says ID is required for purchases above $200. "I don't know if the receipt is legitimate or not," Hinton responded when asked about it by the AP. "I just know that it doesn't say Johnny's name on it anywhere that I can see. It's just that somebody in that store, I guess, circulated that to the other store managers and employees saying, 'Guess who was here today and spent this amount of money.' That's all I know." The errant text was sent Wednesday after the AP sought comment via text about Monday night's crash. When asked about the text, Hinton said he had meant to send it to another attorney on the case and was unaware the AP had received it instead. He insisted the contents were protected by attorney-client privilege and threatened to sue if certain details were published. The text shows that Manziel's attorneys are pushing for leniency, even as they grapple with indications he could still be struggling with substance abuse more than a year after his stay in a rehab center. The charges the former Cleveland Browns quarterback is facing come amid heightened scrutiny of legal cases involving professional athletes following domestic violence accusations against NFL players Ray Rice and Greg Hardy. The 23-year-old Manziel is accused of hitting and threatening former girlfriend Colleen Crowley during a night out in January. He faces a misdemeanor assault charge that carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
NFL to interview Matthew, Peppers, Harrison in PEDs probe NEW YORK (AP) ? Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers and James Harrison will be interviewed next month by NFL officials in connection to a media report that linked them to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. A letter from NFL executive Adolpho Birch that was obtained Friday by The Associated Press says Green Bay linebackers Matthews and Peppers and Pittsburgh linebacker Harrison will be interviewed when training camps open. The Packers begin practicing on July 26, the Steelers on July 29. The letter also mentions defensive lineman Mike Neal, a free agent who will be interviewed. It does not mention the now-retired Peyton Manning, who also was cited in Al-Jazeera's doping report in December. But USA Today, citing an unnamed source, reported that an investigation into Manning's possible involvement also is progressing. The NFL first notified Matthews, Peppers, Harrison and Neal about its investigation into the report on Jan. 11. That investigation has proceeded, but Birch wrote that the NFL Players Association hasn't responded to "multiple requests" to schedule the interviews, which would be conducted with a union representative present. Al-Jazeera America reported allegations by Charlie Sly, who worked as an intern at an anti-aging clinic. But Sly later recanted his claims. In his letter, Birch wrote that "the players were further advised that, with their full and timely cooperation, the investigation would be conducted expeditiously and with minimal disruption." "While the investigation has proceeded," he continued, "we have yet to interview the players. We have attempted since early April to work through the NFLPA to schedule them, but despite multiple requests the NFLPA has failed to respond, except to seek reconsideration of the basis for the investigation. This continuing delay and avoidance has obstructed our ability to conduct and conclude the investigation." The NFLPA said Friday it had contacted Birch about the nature of the investigation. "The NFLPA represents its players in conjunction with any investigation by their employer," the union said in a statement. "On behalf of its players, the NFLPA made numerous inquiries of the NFL through Adolpho Birch asking whether the basis of the NFL's investigation of players is entirely predicated upon recanted statements to a person used by Al Jazeera to make secret recordings. The NFL has not provided any other evidence, nor has it informed the NFLPA or players that any such evidence exists. "As of today, the only additional response from the NFL has been to demand interviews, and apparently to provide correspondence to the media. The NFLPA will continue to represent and advise its players of their rights, and to communicate the players' decisions to the NFL."
Packers report another year of record revenue The Green Bay Packers have reported another year of record revenue. Total revenue rose 8 percent in the past year to nearly $409 million in 2016. It's the 13th straight year with a new high for one of the NFL's marquee teams. Revenue from national sources rose 6 percent to more than $222 million. It was outpaced by the nearly 11 percent growth in local revenue to $186 million. Overall, the Packers are ninth in the league again in total revenue. Even an atypical season without a home playoff game didn't hurt too much. The Packers hit the road for the postseason in 2015 after a four-year streak of winning the NFC Central ended. The difference in revenue between a road and home playoff game is only about $1.5 million. As the league's only publicly owned team, the Packers are required to disclose financial information. The Packers play in the league's smallest market. "We had a very strong year, another strong year financially," team president Mark Murphy said. "The consistent success that we've had on the field has been a part of that over the years." Having one of the NFL's most popular players in quarterback Aaron Rodgers also helps.
Johnny Manziel's dad threw his son under the bus... called him a "druggie" and thinks he will never get clean. Wishes his son would get arrested. Damm... Tough love.
His dad has been singing that tune for quite some time. Unfortunately you cannot force help on someone.
