Joe Schobert heading to Jaguars on five-year deal



The Jaguars are shipping out a lot of talent, but they’re bringing some back in as well.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Browns free agent linebacker Joe Schobert has agreed to a five-year deal with the Jaguars.

The contract is worth a total of $53.75 million, with $22.5 million guaranteed.

It’s a significant deal for a team that has traded away defensive tackle Calais Campbell and may have to with franchise-tagged defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who has said he doesn’t intend to sign with them long-term. They’re also discussing trading quarterback Nick Foles.

Raiders agree to terms with Jason Witten on one-year deal...



Jason Witten will not finish his career with the Cowboys.

After 16 seasons in Dallas, Witten is moving on. He will head to Las Vegas to play for the Raiders this season, Vincent Bonsignore of TheAthletic.com reports.

It is a one-year deal worth up to $4.75 million in 2020, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.

Witten joins Jon Gruden, whom Witten replaced on Monday Night Football in 2018 before resuming his career in 2019. He also will reunite with two former Cowboys assistant coaches in Rod Marinelli and Rich Bisaccia.

The Cowboys made Witten a third-round choice in 2003, and he leaves as one of the greatest players in team history.

But it became obvious after the Cowboys moved on from Jason Garrett that Witten would not be returning to the team. Then, the Cowboys re-signed tight end Blake Jarwin on Monday.

Witten, 37, will join Darren Waller at the position in Las Vegas after playing a career-low 75 percent of the team’s snaps and averaging a career-low 8.4 yards per catch last season in his final season with the Cowboys.

Eagles, Malcolm Jenkins part ways after six seasons...

The Philadelphia Eagles are parting with veteran safety Malcolm Jenkins.

The Eagles announced Tuesday they will not exercise Jenkins' 2020 contract option.

"Malcolm Jenkins has been an outstanding player for us and we are proud of everything he accomplished both on and off the field during his time in Philadelphia," the team said in a statement. "Malcolm was a great teammate and leader, as well as one of the toughest and most reliable players to ever play in our city. After thorough discussion with Malcolm and his agent, Ben Dogra, both sides agreed on the difficult decision to turn the page on what was an incredible six-year relationship. We wish Malcolm and his family all the best as he pursues his next opportunity."

The decision makes the 32-year-old a free agent. Jenkins' option was set to call for a base salary of $7.6 million in 2020. The move saves Philly $4.77 million in cap space with $6.1 million in dead money, per Over The Cap.

Jenkins signed in Philly in 2014 after five years with the New Orleans Saints. He was the Eagles' backend stalwart for the past six seasons, including the Super Bowl run in 2017. The strong safety compiled 81 tackles and 2.5 sacks, with eight passes defended in 2019, and was the most reliable secondary player on a banged-up unit. Over his six seasons with the Eagles, Jenkins was as durable a safety as there was in the NFL, not missing a start during his entire tenure. The decision to decline Jenkins' option could also leave a leadership void in Philly's secondary.

The move by the Eagles to decline Jenkins' option came after the team agreed to a one-year deal with defensive back Jalen Mills worth $5 million, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported.

Mills, a seventh-round pick out of LSU, started nine games in 2019 after beginning the season on the PUP list. He compiled 41 tackles, seven passes defended and one interception. Despite battling injuries, Mills was one of the Eagles top corners since taking over starting duties in Philly.

Garafolo noted that Mills is expected to be a hybrid defensive back for the Eagles in 2020, playing corner and safety.

The decision to move on from Jenkins opens the door for Mills to step into the strong safety role, where some scouts believe he could flourish.

Bengals agree to terms on three-year, $42 million deal with Trae Waynes

The Bengals are making a splash.

After franchising receiver A.J. Green earlier in the week, they agreed to terms with nose tackle D.J. Reader and cornerback Trae Waynes on Tuesday.

Both rank on PFT’s list of top-100 free agents.

Waynes will sign a three-year, $42 million deal with the Bengals, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports. The contract includes $20 million in the first year.

Waynes, 27, has never made the Pro Bowl.

In Minnesota, he played 74 games with 53 starts in the five seasons since the Vikings made him the 11th overall choice.

He leaves the Vikings with 247 tackles, seven interceptions and 42 pass breakups.

That's why I said "as a boxer". Though as an actor, I remember him for Uncommon Valor far more than for Raising Arizona. He actually got to ACT in that one. Did a respectable job of it too.

I never did understand why the ref didn't stop that fight. It was bloody obvious that it was over long, long before it was over. With the Mancini fight being just two weeks earlier, you'd think safety would have been at the top of everyone's priority list.

 

The Dallas Cowboys have reached an agreement with former Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy on a three-year deal, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.com.

McCoy is coming off a single season stay with the Panthers where he appeared in all 16 games and had 37 tackles and five sacks. The six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

McCoy’s addition helps Dallas replenish some of their losses on the defensive side of the ball that have come as a trickle down effect of doing large contracts for Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper and placing the franchise tag on Dak Prescott. The Cowboys have seen cornerback Byron Jones leave for Miami, defensive end Robert Quinn leave for Chicago, and defensive tackle Maliek Collins and safety Jeff Heath headed to Las Vegas.

McCoy has 59.5 sacks over the span of his 10 seasons in the NFL. McCoy has started all 139 games he’s played in over that span with 334 total tackles, six forced fumbles and 23 passes defended.
