For anyone who hasn't heard it yet, Kyle Shanahan was also the play caller (as Offensive Coordinator) who choked away the Superbowl when the Falcons played the Patriots a few years ago.
Yes they could. 49ers only had 2 timeouts left. If he goes down inbounds then one TO is used before 1st down and before 2nd down. Then there are less than 80 seconds to take 2 knees on 2nd and 3rd.
Scoring the td was the right move it put them up 2 scores. If they had gone down on the knee there would be the slight chance you had to give the ball back to the 49ers. Look no further than the very end of the game where the chiefs took 3 knees and still had to go for it on 4th to run out the clock. And that was after a 15 second possesion by the 49ers.
Taking a knee after getting the first down might have iced the game, but scoring another touchdown is hardly a bad strategy inside of two minutes, especially with a good defense and an opponent that wasn't having much success with quick strikes. That's really harsh to say he was being selfish.
If you can take a knee and win the game that is always the right move. The 49ers still had a chance when he scored. The game was over if he slides down in bounds.
Why take the TD? It seems you guys think there would have been some time left if he did. There would not have been. The clock still runs before the 1st down snap. Something I think you are all forgetting.
It's not that taking a knee was a wrong move. That seals the game. But it's overly harsh to say that the player was being selfish, as making it a two score game with under 75 seconds remaining is also a Good Thing. If the coaching staff had instructed him to take a knee if he got a first down, that's different. I don't think that was the case though, and I don't recall seeing Andy Reid looking too upset about going up another six points. So... not the 100% game-sealing move, but not selfish either.
Kyle Shanahan as play caller in the fourth quarter of Superbowls: 7 drives 6 first downs 4 punts 2 turnovers 1 failed fourth down conversion 0 points.
Because it's the Super Bowl...That's knockout punch with style, and a memory KC fans will never forget.. You are talking about the 49ers having a 0.001% chance as opposed to 0%...Not significant enough IMO to tell that kid to hook slide in that moment.
Browns set to hire Joe Woods as defensive coordinator The Browns had to wait until after the Super Bowl to hire their defensive coordinator, but the team’s hiring of Joe Woods will become official soon, Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reports. Woods coached the 49ers’ defensive backs and served as the defensive passing game coordinator. He worked with new Browns coach Kevin Stefanski in Minnesota from 2006-13. “With Kevin, I’ve had a relationship with him, coaching on the same staff,’’ Woods told Cabot during Super Bowl Week. “So if that were to happen, I feel it would be very easy, a seamless transition. There’s a trust factor there. He knows my work ethic. He saw me in the building for eight years, so he knows what I’m all about, so I don’t think there would be a problem there.’’ The 49ers wanted to keep Woods, but the promotion to defensive coordinator working for a coach he knows well was too big of a draw apparently. Woods’ only experience as defensive coordinator came with the Broncos in 2017-18. He also has spent time with the Bucs and the Raiders. The Browns already have hired Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator and Mike Priefer as special teams coordinator. source; NBCsports
Greg Olsen is officially a free agent. The Carolina Panthers released the veteran tight end on Monday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per the transaction wire. The move came four days after Olsen and the Panthers announced they would mutually part ways ahead of the 2020 season. Olsen, 34, had one year left on his deal, which would have cost $11.6 million in 2020, but is now free to sign with another entity -- in football or in television. While the tight end indicated in his statement that he still has "love of football" and could sign with a competitive organization in the coming weeks, Olsen has explored a second career in football broadcasting, most recently playing pregame studio analyst for Fox Sports. For his career, Olsen has 718 catches for 8,444 yards and 59 touchdowns -- 524 of those catches, 6,463 of those yards and 39 of those touchdowns came as a Panther. Carolina will move forward at the tight end position with Ian Thomas, Chris Manhertz and Temarrick Hemingway. Expect the Panthers to fill out that part of the depth chart this offseason. source; NFL.com
Vic Beasley will hit the open market in free agency. The Falcons have announced that they will not enter negotiations to resign the 2015 first round draft pick, the team's very first selection under head coach Dan Quinn. Beasley had a monster 2016 season and ended up leading the team in sacks this season, but has been regarded as a disappointment for a team that needs to clear cap space.
The Chiefs were close to scoring a TD on that last second heave by Mahomes. That would have been cool for them to get another 7.
Andy Reid getting the monkey off his back with this win, which leaves Marty Schottenheimer as the best coach to never win anything. The Chiefs need to thank the 49er DC for going to Zone in the 4th quarter which just begged Mahomes to go deep on em.
I will give him the benefit of the doubt of not knowing the math and that no one told him that going down after a 1st is game. If that's the case you score because you don't know. Although you should even with championship run going through your mind, it's the kind of thing savvy players keep in mind.
Kyle is taking a lot of heat for his play calling but lets not forget chris jones made some key defelctions, a open samdwrs was overthrown and one one key third down a wide open kittle was not seen by garoppalo. About the only gaff he really made was not using his time outs at the end of the half and even that can be debated (personally i think he was wrong not to use them but i can see the argument of why he didnt).
You have the ball in your hand and no one in front of you....the endzone in sight. Your team is winning but only by one score. Adrenaline soaring....championship game. It wasn't selfish and it wasn't dumb. While an argument could be made for sliding down I don't think it's about not knowing the math or not being told what to do. He did exactly what he's been told to do his whole life...hit pay dirt. I have zero issue with that play.
