Well at least the Texans made up for getting bent over on the Clowney deal by massively overpaying for Tunsil.
Bears left guard Cody Whitehair will open the new season with new long-term job security. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Whitehair has agreed to a five-year contract extension. The total value of the extension is $52.5 million and comes with $27.5 million guaranteed money. Whitehair was a second-round pick in 2016 and was headed into the final year of his rookie deal. He’s started every game that the Bears have played since he arived in Chicago and he was selected to the Pro Bowl last season, which led many to think that a deal would be coming his way at some point this year. With Whitehair’s extension done, the Bears now have all of their starting offensive linemen under contract through 2020. (PFT)
The Dolphins kept Kiko Alonso on their 53-man roster, but only for a day. Alonso has been traded to the Saints this morning, according to multiple reports. There’s no word yet on what the Saints sent back to Miami, but it presumably isn’t much, given that Alonso has a base salary of $6.485 million in 2019 that made many question whether any team would want him at all. Over the last two seasons Alonso has started every game but two in Miami, but the Dolphins are trying to get younger and cheaper and have decided to move on. The Saints will hope that Alonso can bolster their defense as they try to get to one more Super Bowl with Drew Brees. UPDATE 10:03 a.m. ET: The Dolphins will receive backup linebacker Vince Biegel in the trade, according to Nick Underhill of TheAthletic.com. (PFT)
It certainly appears that the Dolphins are going all in on the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes. {edit} They may be tanking a year too early as I don't believe Lawrence is draft eligible until 2021.
I'm not sure these moves signal that they have an actual target in the draft for next season. Right now, I'm under the impression that Grier and Flores will be in Miami as a combination for at least 5 years and this is more a move towards changing culture. They are going to be looking for guys that 'buy in' to what they are looking to do. The haul of picks they are stacking combined with roster flexibility is going to give them opportunity to do a massive overhaul in a very short period of time. If you remember some discussions of ours before, I was in agreement with a lot of how the Browns were utilizing the draft as currency to make moves. Sashi Brown set the template for how to maneuver picks and shuffle assets in a new era of the NFL, IMO.
When Panthers safety Eric Reid took a cheap shot at Patriots tight end Ben Watson in their teams’ preseason game, it immediately raised questions about whether it was personal and intentional. The NFL seemed to accept Reid’s denial. Reid was fined $10,527 for the hit, which is an amount commensurate with an ordinary unnecessary roughness hit. If the league had believed Reid set out to hurt Watson, the punishment likely would have been more severe. Watson and Reid have had a personal beef over the Players Coalition, which Watson has supported and Reid has decried. Reid will be on the field in Week One; Watson is suspended for the first four games of the season for a violation of the league’s PED policy. (PFT)
well the eagles struck out on clowney and mccoy. they're sitting on a lot of cap space but may need it for next year. im not a fan of saving anything for next year. we are in the now like this season. i still think roseman makes a move. happy he didn't get mccoy. that shitshow left philly when it needed too.
The Chargers have officially suffered a big loss on their defense. Chargers safety Derwin James is going on injured reserve, which means he will miss at least half the season, General Manager Tom Telesco confirmed. That was expected after James underwent surgery for a foot injury. The surgery took place on August 22 and had an anticipated 3-4 month recovery time, so James will probably not be back until late in the year. The good news is that the decision to place James on injured reserve a day after putting him on the 53-man roster suggests that the Chargers do expect him to return. If he had gone on injured reserve before the 53-man roster cutdown, he would not have been eligible to return during the season. The Chargers have to hope that they’re in playoff contention when James returns, at which point his return would be a major bonus. As a rookie last season, James was a first-team All-Pro. (PFT)
The Steelers don’t re-do contracts once the season starts. This means that the Steelers and cornerback Joe Haden were playing beat the clock to get a new deal in place before next Sunday’s opener against the Patriots. They pulled it off. Per a league source, Haden and the Steelers agreed to terms on a two-year extension for $22 million. Haden was entering the final year of his three-year deal with the Steelers, signed after he was cut by the Browns before the season started. Due to make $10 million this season, it’s now a three-year, $32 million arrangement for Haden, with more than half of the amount — $16.8 million — paid in the form of a signing bonus. The seventh overall pick in the 2010 draft, the 30-year-old Haden has appeared in 39 regular-season games in three season for the Steelers. (PFT)
Dolphins release John Denney...………… Fish Tank The Dolphins have said farewell to several veterans in the last few days and now the longest-tenured player on the team has been dropped from the roster as well. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the team has released long snapper John Denney. Denney has been with the Dolphins since 2005 and has appeared in all 224 regular season games and both playoff games that the team has played over that span. His 224 consecutive games played are tied for the 17th-longest streak in NFL history and it is the longest active streak in the league, although that’s obviously on shaky footing at the moment. There is not another long snapper on the Dolphins roster right now and Salguero adds that it is possible Denney will be brought back in the near future. (PFT)
Left tackle Greg Robinson‘s absence from the Browns roster was a brief one. Robinson was released on Sunday in a move that came as a surprise given his spot in the starting lineup. The Browns weren’t having a last second change of heart about a key spot on their offensive line, however. As with many other teams, the Browns had to do some juggling with veterans who weren’t subject to waivers as they set their 53-man rosters for the first week of the season and word at the time of Robinson’s departure was that he’d be back with the team. Robinson was indeed back with the team on Monday. The Browns haven’t formally made an announcement, but multiple reporters at the open portion of Browns practice have noted that Robinson is in uniform and going through drills with the rest of the team.
Source: Cowboys, La'el Collins close to deal https://www.yahoo.com/sports/source-cowboys-lael-collins-close-to-deal-112318108.html This...really surprises me.
That is interesting. Maybe a shot at Cooper, Prescott and Zeke to just stop talking, be quiet, "honor your contract", lol, and good things happen, I don't know. Seems like JJ wants to send a message, but on the other hand, it might just be Collins deal was easier to negotiate. At any rate, like you said, its kinda surprising.

The Jets chose Quinnen Williams with the third overall pick in this year’s draft, but Williams has not yet earned a starting job. Williams is listed as second string on the Jets’ first depth chart of the season, behind Steve McLendon on the defensive line. Teams’ publicly released depth charts don’t necessarily show how the team will line up for the first play of the first game, but it’s an indication that Williams will be coming off the bench in Week One. Also noteworthy on the Jets’ depth chart is that Braxton Berrios, a wide receiver just claimed off waivers from the Patriots, is the starting punt returner.
https://94wip.radio.com/blogs/eliot...WJVibIzvhe6F1J6kK9VE5RFznt7B5GetKYWSp71V_ldqE EAGLES offer a trade for Melvin Gordon. Chargers say "no." To me, way too low of an offer. Need to up the pick if you want Gordon.
