Really don’t know what more there is to say. They messed up a call, happens frequently. As frustrating as these calls are, is everyone really ready to lose that human component of the game? I go back and forth, usually this blatant of a call isn’t missed but I highly doubt it is the first and won’t be the last.

Jerry Jones on deal for Ezekiel Elliott: “When have I not been able to get a deal done”

While Bobby Wagner and Michael Thomas have received new contracts since the start of training camp with their respective teams, running back Ezekiel Elliott continues to wait for his desired new deal from the Dallas Cowboys.

While the two sides don’t appear to be close to a deal at this point, there seems to be a desire from both camps to get a deal squared away at some point. Despite any posturing in the interim, the Cowboys could certainly benefit from a big presence from Elliott this season even if the running back position isn’t as valuable as it once was.

So, is a deal going to get done?

“When have I not been able to get a deal done,” owner Jerry Jones said, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Dallas also has to take care of contracts for wide receiver Amari Cooper and quarterback Dak Prescott. Cooper and Prescott are entering the final year of their contracts with the team while Elliott still has two years remaining on his current deal with the Cowboys. So Elliott may not be the top priority for the front office at the moment.

Whatever the gap is between Elliott and the Cowboys, Jones is a pretty influential piece to the puzzle when it comes to deciding what happens in Dallas. If he’s confident a deal will get done, it probably will get done. Eventually.

Cornerback Darius Slay is finally ready to start practicing for the Lions.

Slay didn’t take part in the team’s offseason program in hopes of landing a new contract with the team, but reported to training camp on time after his agent met with the team last month.

Slay was not cleared to practice upon his arrival, however. Slay was placed on the non-football injury list and that left him on the sidelines until Friday. That’s when the Lions announced that he’s been activated from the list and cleared to get on the field.

Defensive tackle Damon Harrison also skipped offseason work before reporting to camp. He remains on the NFI list along with defensive lineman Darius Kilgo. Defensive end Trey Flowers, wide receiver Tommylee Lewis and linebacker Steve Longa are on the physically unable to perform list.

Cliff Branch, a big-play wide receiver whose speed exemplified the Raiders’ style of offensive football in the 1970s and 1980s, has died at the age of 71.

Raiders owner Mark Davis confirmed Branch’s death in a brief statement.

“Cliff was my best friend,” Davis said. “I will miss him dearly.”

A star receiver and record-setting kickoff returner at Colorado, Branch was also a good enough sprinter that after the Raiders drafted him in 1972, he gave some consideration to trying to run in that summer’s Olympics before deciding to focus full-time on football.

By his third season in 1974, Branch had emerged as a star, leading the NFL in receiving yards, with 1,092, and receiving touchdowns, with 13. Two years later, in 1976, he would again lead the league in touchdowns while averaging an incredible 24.2 yards per catch.

Branch was a three-time first-team All-Pro and played his entire career with the Raiders. He was the only wide receiver who was on all three of the Raiders’ Super Bowl-winning teams, in 1976, 1980 and 1983.

Yannick Ngakoue reports to Jaguars camp

Defensive end Yannick Ngakoue had to report to Jaguars training camp by Tuesday in order to be credited with an accrued season in 2019 and he beat the clock by a couple of days.

The Jaguars announced on Sunday morning that Ngakoue has reported to the team facility, which brings his holdout to an end in time for Ngakoue to get credit for the season he needs to be on track for unrestricted free agency at the end of the season.

Ngakoue’s path to free agency could be blocked by a franchise tag, although he’d surely prefer landing a long-term deal that would bump his salary to the level that the likes of Frank Clark, Dee Ford and DeMarcus Lawrence reached this offseason. All were tagged to open the offseason and Clark and Ford were traded before landing their deals, so there’s a lot to still play out for Ngakoue.

Ngakoue was a 2016 third-round pick and has recorded 29.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles through his first three seasons.

Browns coach Freddie Kitchens has a stern warning for his assistant coaches: Keep your mouths shut, or lose your job.

Kitchens said today that if any of his assistant coaches ever leak information about the team to the media, he’ll fire them.

“The days of inside information and the days of unnamed sources and stuff like that have ended. So you’re not going to get information like that, ever. Anybody. And if I ever see it, they’re fired. Immediately. That’s the way we’re running this organization,” Kitchens said.

Kitchens said that after he was asked a question about recent criticism from former Browns assistant Bob Wylie, who said the Browns should have kept Gregg Williams as head coach, rather than hiring Kitchens. But Wylie wasn’t an unnamed source; he put his name behind that opinion and stated it publicly.

The Browns have had their share of embarrassing stories from unnamed sources, but the primary reason for that is that the Browns have been the worst team in the NFL over the last couple decades. If Kitchens wins, that will speak for itself, and it won’t much matter what anyone says about him, on or off the record.

It appears Oakland will begin the 2019 regular season without an offseason free-agent acquisition.

Raiders cornerback Nevin Lawson said in a Twitter post on Monday evening that he has been suspended by the league for the first four games of the season for violating the league's PED policy.

Lawson said he failed a drug test for Ostarine, though he has "never knowingly taken" the drug.

"Unfortunately, it does not matter, as I am responsible for knowing every single ingredient that goes into my body," Lawson wrote, "and I apparently failed in this regard."

Lawson is not the first player to have been disciplined this offseason for using Ostarine. Titans tackle Taylor Lewan is also facing a four-game suspension after testing positive for the substance.

Oakland signed Lawson to a one-year deal in March after the cornerback was cut by the Lions. Lawson was drafted by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2014 draft and started 54 of 62 games played over five seasons for the franchise.

Lawson is one of seven new cornerbacks in Oakland and is vying for a starting role that he could well inhabit when he returns from his expected suspension.

Word in July was that Jadeveon Clowney would report to the Texans until just before the start of the regular season, but it appears that plan has shifted to give him a little bit more time with the team before they face the Saints on the first Monday Night Football game of the year.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Clowney’s plan is to report to the team after they face the Cowboys in their third preseason game on August 24. Clowney would not play in the team’s final preseason game, but would have some more time to work with the team and make sure he’s ready to go for the regular season.

The report calls that a “tentative plan,” so there could be a change over the next couple of weeks but there’s no expectation that Clowney will miss regular season time.

Clowney is set to play out the year under the terms of the franchise tag and would be set for unrestricted free agency next year as long as the Texans don’t use the tag a second time.
