Therein lies the problem, he isn't stealing any of McVay's top coaches...where is he going to find his staff? How many proven coaches will want to work for a 35 year old wannabe? This will be an interesting part of the process as well. What promises can be made to incoming coaches? Mike Brown is cheap, he isn't going to be buying the top echelon of coaches to fill his cabinet.

Once again, the good news is we face him twice a year..the better news is, he will probably be the Bengals coach throughout Baker's entire career...they hate firing coaches.

If this were anyone but Mike Brown, I would agree, but I don't give him enough credit to launch that plan.

Thanks for the insight Tim. I think I am still feeling the sting of the Giants "chasing trends" and trying to find the next big thing and ending up with Ben MacAdoo and his stupid Diner Menu play card. I saw Jim Trotter talking about coaching changes on twitter yesterday. Since 2000 there have been 129 coaching changes -- of those 43 were fired in two years or less. I think we can grade any coach who get's fired after two seasons as a disaster. That's firmly 33% of all coaching hires are strait up terrible decisions. Doesn't give you a whole lot of hope that owners know how to hire or look for a good coach.

Oh I don't think it's the plan I just think it's a possibility. I mean the reality is we have no idea how any of these coaching hires will work out. But I do think it's a rare candidate that can be a young guy with limited history and make a big jump from position coach to HC and see immediate success. With the Bengal he may get himself a few extra seasons to prove if he belongs or not though because as you said -- they hate firing coaches.

I think it's extremely premature to call the guy a 'wannabe' and claim two games in the bag every year without seeing him strolling on the sidelines first.

There are plenty of coaches out there looking for an opportunity to prove their worth. The question isn't whether or not he can find people for the job, it's about whether or not he can tab the right ones to get things moving in a positive direction quickly.

Could be that he hires Gregg Williams to be his DC. That would make for an interesting situation for a pair of games in 2019.

Back to the coach's for a second.

I think we have what you might call, in todays era of the NFL, coach's parity. You got Belichick on top of the whole thing and the rest of the NFL at mediocrity or less.

Back in the day... you could see a Tom Landry, Shula, Madden, Bud Grant and Chuck Noll, amongst others all in the same era. That just ain't happening these day's.

I can't say one way or the other whether hiring Kitchens or Taylor is the right move or wrong move - neither, really, can anyone until we actually see what they can do.

I will say this, though: I'd rather see these types of hirings as opposed to the moldy-oldy recycling carousel we often see.

That's an interesting question that I never considered.

I don't remember reading anything or hearing anything about conflict between the two when they were together, but now that Gase is out of Miami it could signal that Grier is going to go after a staff that will want Ryan on the roster.

If Chris goes after a defensive minded head coach he will likely roll with the QBs in the room until he establishes his identity of defense, unless an opportunity pops up that gives him a chance to upgrade the position without overturning the apple cart. Grier has done a decent job infusing some talent through the draft in Miami so I would think he probably goes that route for a new passer.

And a quick side note on the Dolphins - I think they absolutely got it right with promoting Chris Grier and removing Tannebaum/Gase. If he is given the opportunity to handle business in his own vision, without owner interference, I believe the Dolphins will be ready to compete for the AFC East title every season within 5 years.

I'm not big on chasing down 'the flavor of the month' either. It typically ends poorly, but Taylor was a guy I had on my list of potentials for head coaches before all of the off-season madness began.

When a coach gets fired in two years or less, that's completely on the GM and ownership.

If it fails that quickly, they hired the wrong guy for the job and that's not the same thing as a guy being a bad coach. Just like with players in the draft, the situation for a coach has a lot to do with his success or failure.

    Yes it would...

    Gregg Williams scoring defenses:
    Browns
    2018 #21
    2017 #31
    Rams
    2016 #23
    2015 #13
    2014 #17
    2012 #14
    Saints
    2011 #13
    2010 #7
    2009 #20 (Super Bowl Champions)
    Jaguars
    2008 #21
    Redskins
    2007 #11
    2006 #27
    2005 #9
    2004 #5

He has declined over the years...

I will say this, with the Cleveland Browns, Gregg Williams was a better Head Coach than Defensive Coordinator. I honestly think that is his calling...I wonder if he will ever get another chance?

Agreed, if a guy is fired within 2 years, there is a lot more problems in the organization than the HC. I've lived through a life time's worth over the past 20 years watching the Browns...It wasn't ALL coaching.

Agreed. Sometimes the trend gets focused on more than the developing arc, and I'm guilty of it at times as well.

As a head coach or as a DC?

I think he will get another shot at defensive coordinator because the league loves to recycle established guys.

But if I were running a club I'd like to see what it would take to coax him into sitting in on player evaluations and getting his input on a guy's mentality.

I don't know how much I would trust him to run my defense, but I would definitely pay attention if he spoke up in the room and declared post-combine interview that a player possessed aggressiveness and intensity.

    Head Coach..

I think he is better in that role than DC, from my observations... I don't think he will get consideration for that role though.

IMHO, he (Gregg Williams) should. He was asked to step into a situation fraught with turmoil and, apparently, smoothed enough feathers to get the ship pointed in the right direction. And, no, I dont believe he did it all by himself . . . But he did succeed when his predecessor failed.

I haven't been a huge fan of a majority of the coaching hires thus far.

Kingsbury to the Cards and Gase to the Jets perplex me.

I think LaFleur possibly inherits the best job simply because he has Rodgers and team brass knows it can't keep having losing seasons and will be fully all in on turning it around.

Fangio is a really good coach and person...the players there will buy in. Kubiak as OC was a head scratch moment for me. But Fangio will get results on defense...and it's not like they are bad on that side of the ball already. The division he coaches in will play a role in his success or failure.

Arians is a good coach but will coach a poorly ran franchise and needs a real QB.

The rest of the hires are flavor the week type of things. Bengals are screaming for a rebuild and coaches that are hired before the rebuild don't usually make it through. Browns kinda had their hand forced by how well Mayfield played under Kitchens...because if they hired anyone else they risked losing Kitchens. Not to say it's a bad hire but I'm far from sold on the guy and think the majority of the credit for what that team did belongs on the arm and balls of Mayfield. And also demonstrates just how bad Hue Jackson is/was versus the job Williams did keeping players and coaches focused.

In five years I predict....Kingsbury is back in college. Gase is a coordinator somewhere. LaFleur is still on the Packer sideline. Fangio is retired or coaching someone's defense. Arians is retired. Kitchens is a position coach somewhere and Zac Taylor is someone's offensive coordinator.

Kingsberry is a guy I wanted the Giants to talk to about replacing Shula as OC. Shula still feels like an odd fit with Shurmer to me and I really would prefer if Shurmer just focused on being the team CEO and not calling the plays on the sidelines. But with Shula as the OC... I certainly don't want Shula calling the plays.

I am really excited to see what Kingsberry can do with Rosen though. He was clearly brought in to try and get him sorted out and settled in. I have to admit I believe he has an equal chance of burning out spectacularly as he does of being a successful NFL coach. But man O man did I love the idea of him coming in as an OC.

Unless they completely rehaul that O-line...that offense isn't built for Rosen.

I don't see the attraction to Kingsbury. Because the Red Raiders had two good seasons on offense when they had Mahomes? I don't know what I'm missing there.

Haha....Dolphins are interviewing Dowell Loggains for HC.

If you hire him...every team in your division will buy you something nice. Including the Jets and Adam Gase....and Loggains is Gase's boy.
