If he's only requested to interview for a DC position, if I'm Jerruh I deny permission. Would definitely be. Marinelli was contemplating retirement before deciding to come back for this year; wonder if he steps aside (or is gently nudged aside) so the team can possibly hold onto Richard.
Teams can interview anyone for an upgrade but they are probably going to wait to see if Dallas beats the rams first, because if they don't then they won't need permission.
My understanding is another team would have to ask for permission to interview another team's coach if it isn't for the head coaching position. Is that not correct?
Hmmm...Marinelli might step aside to let Richard assume DC title in Dallas. https://247sports.com/nfl/dallas-co...5-42-DB-BB-C9-FC-CD190109_150132DallasCowboys
That's just Marinelli being who he is. It's sad that some people will only remember him as a guy that went 0-16 in Detroit. He's an extreme selfless guy that puts everything he's got into the game and truly cares about the players he coaches and the other coaches around him.
There are some guys who just aren't cut out to be a head coach, but who are fantastic assistant coaches. Marinelli is one of those. There are Indians, and there are chiefs. Nothing wrong with being a hard-working, productive, accountable Indian.
Okay, I think you're right. Once the season ends, since he's a secondary coach, another team could offer him a promotion (DC). But if Marinelli steps aside and Dallas makes him DC, then I'm guessing another team can't ask him to be DC - only HC...???
If he accepts the promotion then yes. The team can't just say he is the new DC and stop him from looking for the same position elsewhere.
See Wade Phillips and Norv Turner for two more examples dynamite coordinators two of the best in fact but not so good at HC.
In we don’t give a hell if we ever win a football game news.... The Jets are gonna hire Adam Gase as their new HC.
Yeah, they just made the odds of their young quarterback developing rapidly take a serious nose dive. With so many really good options out there it's refreshing to see the Jets say "fuck it, we like to lose, and by like we mean love that shit more than sunshine and pandas riding unicorns through a field full of cotton candy.". I apologize for that last off beat analogy. I just got home from my daughter's dance class and some random parent-less child was telling me about the Pan-Un. It's a magical creature from her own mythical universe that is half panda, half unicorn, half horse and it flies. So... I guess it's basically a furry black and white Pegasus with a punk rock mohawk mane. Or at least that was the image in my head because this kid was really fucking selling this Pan-Un. I half expected to walk out the door and step in a big pile of glittery purple horseshit getting in the car.
If a cat with a Pop-Tart body that flies through space with a rainbow coming out of its ass can be an internet hit, then this panda unicorn thing has "movie franchise" written all over it. Find that kid and become her agent.
I'm telling ya, this kid don't need no stinking agent. She could sell that furry hoofed freak to George Lucas so hard that ol' George would hand her a fist full of cash and a contract that guarantees a starring role in all 19 sequels.
If he is under contract next year the team can deny the right to interview for a non-head coaching position but only if they are under contract. The contract details for assistant coaches can be tricky to find though. Essentially unless he himself is a free agent -- Jerruh can block him for interviewing for any job that isn't to be a HC. It's kind of a dick move -- but it happens. The Vikings blocked QB coach Stefanski from leaving to be the OC for the Giants because they didn't want to lose the OC and QB coach in one fell swoop. It was a total dick move to then bring in an OC from the outside though.
With all due respect, I don't believe a team can block a position coach from interviewing for a Coordinator job, nor can they block a Coordinator from interviewing for Head Coaching job. Teams still active in the playoffs have a little more latitude but, once they're eliminated from the playoffs, all bets are off.
