Is he going to want to go somewhere where he's going to sit another 3 years, or is going to want to go somewhere where he can compete for a starting job?

  6. Campbell Administrator Manager Commissioner

It makes sense for Cleveland on a few levels.

First, he has familiarity and a comfort level with the head coach.

Second, the Browns will be drafting a quarterback early and it gives them a veteran presence in the quarterback room. Having only Shizer, Hogan and a rookie doesn't add any leadership.

Third, it clears the air on whether or not Hue is the future. If Jackson fails with the quarterback that he was willing to trade for (or with the rookie that may beat him out in camp) then the writing is on the wall and the Browns can begin to look for another coach.

He wore his Steelers jersey so no one could mistake him for a freshman.

He is such a refreshing player compared to all the diva stuff you see at WR.

Panthers reinstate Marty Hurney to interim G.M. duties

The Panthers have a General Manager again, at least an interim one.

The Panthers announced on a Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend that Marty Hurney has been reinstated as interim G.M., after a two-week investigation following complaints of harassment by his ex-wife.

The team (not the league) placed him on paid leave on Feb. 4, and notified the league which began an investigation under the personal conduct policy.

He’s now free to get back to work preparing for the draft and free agency, though they haven’t made a permanent decision. They may not, with a new owner coming in a few months, since Hurney’s contract runs through June.

The team also interviewed Lake Dawson, Jimmy Raye III and Martin Mayhew for the permanent job.

Rams' Barron, Webster both undergo shoulder surgery

Two of the Los Angeles Rams' top defenders have gone under the knife.

Rams linebacker Mark Barron and cornerback Kayvon Webster both underwent shoulder surgery recently, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday, per sources.

Barron should be ready for camp, while Webster's availability come summer will depend on how he recovers from the torn Achilles tendon that kept him out of L.A.'s final six games.

Barron played in and started 15 of Los Angeles' 17 games last season, recording three picks and 72 tackles. Webster, who had one interception and 34 tackles last season, is entering the final season of a two-year deal signed with the Rams in 2017. (NFL.com)

Report: Jets will pay “whatever it takes” to get Kirk Cousins

The Jets apparently want Kirk Cousins. They apparently want him badly enough that they’re willing to break the bank for him.

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, the Jets are “willing to pay whatever it takes” to get him.

This report comes amid a belief that the Jets may be willing to fully guarantee Cousins’ deal. The notion of paying “whatever it takes” becomes far more open-ended than that, especially since there’s no way of knowing what it will take until knowing what another team will pay.

If there’s at least one other team willing to make a similar commitment, the end result could be an auction that drives the market well north of $30 million per year. Assuming, of course, that Cousins would want to actually play for one of the teams willing to break the bank.

During a Super Bowl-week visit to PFT Live, Cousins seemed to suggest that he’s willing to take less to win, while also acknowledging that plenty of winning teams have expensive quarterbacks. Last year, he seemed to suggest that his goal is to make as much as possible.

“[T]here’s other quarterbacks that come after you and it would be almost a selfish move to hurt future quarterbacks who get in a position to have a contract,” Cousins said in January 2017. “And if you don’t take a deal that’s fair to you, then you’re also taking a deal that’s not fair to them and you’re setting them back as well. So there’s different reasons. You just do the best you can.”

Cousins will be doing better than the best any quarterback has ever done, whether it’s with the Jets or another team. Barring a third straight franchise tag from his current team (which remains unlikely, and likely would be scrapped via a grievance), Cousins will become the first healthy franchise quarterback on the right side of 30 to become a free agent in nearly a quarter-century of free agency. Given the $44 million he has made over the last two years, his next deal could push his career earnings toward a quarter-billion.

Houston Texans to release linebacker Brian Cushing

The Brian Cushing era in Houston is set to come to an end.

The Texans informed Cushing, the team's all-time leading tackler, they are moving on from him, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday.

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain first reported the news.

The impending cut is not a surprising one (No. 7 on Gregg Rosenthal's potential AFC cut candidates earlier this week). The linebacker was suspended 10 games this past season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances for the second time in his career. His play had diminished, with Cushing only posting one 100-plus-tackle season and only one full slate of 16 games since 2012. When you factor in the Texans saving $7.6 million with his release, it made his eventual departure prior to the new league year on March 14 all but a foregone conclusion.

"It's all good," Cushing told McClain of the looming release. "It's part of the business."

Cushing, the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2009, logged 664 total tackles in his nine-year run with the team. He ends his career in Houston ranking in the top 10 in the Texans' all-time record book in interceptions, forced fumbles and sacks. (PFT)
