Kirk Cousins, Redskins OK with QB playing '17 on tag Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins have until Monday, July 17, at 4 p.m. ET to sign a long-term contract. It doesn't sound like a deal will get done by the deadline. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday morning that barring the unforeseen, there is a strong indication Cousins will play out his tag, according to sources informed of the situation. Both sides are OK with the one-year, $23.94 million pact, per Rapoport. Once the deadline passes, the team and quarterback cannot agree to a new contract until next offseason. All the signs have pointed to Cousins playing out another season on the franchise tag. After making $19.95 million in 2016, the Redskins quarterback will pocket $43.89 million for two years of work. With no multi-year deal in sight, Washington will head into next offseason with a large question at quarterback. They could tag Cousins a third time for an astronomical sum of about $35 million or transition tag him for around $28 million, which would allow the Redskins to match any offer he receives from another team. The final option is let Cousins hit free agency and possibly watch him walk to the highest bidder. If he hits the open market, there will be no shortage of suitors -- with the quarterback's former coordinator Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco likely being the first in line. Cousins certainly should be comfortable playing out the tag. He has all the leverage, no history of injury to threaten his long-term earnings and knows he can get paid if he gets to free agency. The Redskins continue to kick the can down the road while paying their QB a premium on one-year deals. Without a deal by Monday, the situation comes to a head in 2018, when a starting quarterback could finally force his way to free agency in his prime. (NFL.com)
http://247sports.com/Bolt/Corey-Dillon-says-hes-getting-snubbed-from-the-Hall-of-Fame--75056968 is Corey Dillon really a HOF'er? I know he had over 11,000 yrds rushing but it that automatic entry into the HOF? Terrell Owens is the second best WR ever and due to his antics, he still can't get in !
I don't suppose Dillon is helping his cause much by slamming others and the Hall process. Shooting himself in the foot is what he's doing. There are a bunch of worthy guy's who for some reason have not made it in for reasons I don't understand, but one thing for certain, slamming the process isn't going to get it done either.
LOL, I liked Corey Dillon a lot as a player, but I'll have some of what he's having if he thinks he's a better player than OJ was just because he's got 5 more career rushing yards (with 2 more games per year and a couple hundred more carries) and a few more TD's (the latter number helped in great part by getting a ton of short TD's playing with Brady the last three years of his career). OJ's in primarily because of his insane 5 year run from 72-76: 70 G, 1513 att, 7699 yards, 45 TD's, 5.1 YPC, 110.0 YPG The numbers for Dillon's best 5 seasons: 78 G, 1577 att, 6896 yards, 41 TD's, 4.4 YPC, 88.4 YPG Dillon was a very good back, but he wasn't OJ. And it was funny to hear him emphasize that he was talking about OJ "just football wise, nothing else," considering he is one of the more deplorable human beings off the field that ever played in the league.
2 things- did OJ break the 2000 yrs in a season barrier and was the first to do it ? and i thought it was 5 inductees minimum for Canton, not the max ?
We all know Owens would be in already if he wasn't a sick to the committee. They are purposely making him wait and letting others ahead. Dillon will probably get in eventually, at least that's what I think.
OJ was the first to break 2000 and it's still the best season ever for a RB . He averaged more yards per game than any other 2000 yard back because he had two less games. No other RB has reached 2000 in less than 16 games. OJ also had the worst QB and passing game out of all the 2000 yard backs. He also did it against defenses that were totally stacked up with 9 in the box. He did have a HOF guard and another pro bowl guard and center. Put it this way, OJ torched Detroit for a record 273 yards Thanksgiving Day in 1976 and Detroit won in a laugher. The Bills royally sucked during OJ's career and he was their only offense and still managed to average 110 yards a game from 1972-1977. If he didn't hold out so much after his 2000 yard season he might be the only back with multiple 2000 yard seasons.
Zimmer to Floyd: I'll cut you, if I find out you're lying Michael Floyd was sentenced to a day in jail in June after presenting his kombucha tea defense to an Arizona judge. The Minnesota Vikings receiver also sold coach Mike Zimmer that the tea caused his failed tests for alcohol. "Do I believe it? I don't know how much tea he drank. I have no clue," Zimmer told Brian Murphy of the Pioneer Press. "I don't have any doubt why there'd be skepticism, but he told me that he wasn't [drinking]. That it was legit." Zimmer said he spoke with Floyd over the phone after news broke that he violated the terms of his DUI conviction. "I said, 'If I find out you're lying to me, I'm going to cut you,'" Zimmer said. Floyd told Scottsdale officials the positive test results stemmed from his consumption of kombucha tea, which he didn't realize contained alcohol. Floyd pleaded guilty to extreme DUI in February after Scottsdale police found him unconscious behind the wheel of his SUV in December. The 27-year-old served the first 24 days of his 120-day jail sentence at a county facility before spending the final 96 days in home confinement, according to court records. In addition to jail time, he was ordered not to drink alcohol, undergo alcohol counseling, perform 30 hours of community service and pay a fine of $5,115.99. The Arizona Cardinals released Floyd two days after the DUI arrest and the New England Patriots claimed him off waivers. After being part of the Patriots' Super Bowl-winning squad, the sixth-year receiver signed an incentive-laden deal with the Vikings last month worth $1.5 million for one year, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Floyd remains subject to possible NFL discipline under the league's personal conduct policy. ___________ _____________________ Good for Zimm!
Michael Floyd suspended for first four games of 2017 Michael Floyd will miss the first quarter of the season. The Vikings wide receiver was suspended for the first four games of the 2017 campaign for violating the league's substance abuse policy, the team announced, via a league spokesman. In late June, a judge sentenced Floyd to a day in jail and ordered him to serve the final five days of his previously issued house arrest for violating the terms of his DUI conviction. Floyd tested positive for alcohol while on house arrest, but said the positive test was due to his consumption of Kombucha tea, which he didn't realize contained alcohol. The 27-year-old served the first 24 days of his 120-day jail sentence at a county facility before spending the final 96 days in home confinement, according to court records. Report: Ezekiel Elliott bracing for a?suspension Nearly a year after prosecutors announced that Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott would not face charges over allegations of domestic violence, the NFL continues to investigate the matter. And it?s not looking good for Elliott. Adam Schefter reported on ESPN today that Elliott and people around him are starting to conclude that the NFL is going to suspend Elliott for the start of the season. ?Ezekiel Elliott at this point in time is bracing for a short suspension,? Schefter said. ?Maybe one game, maybe two games, but as one person told me, in quotes, ?It looks like the NFL is trying to pin something on him.'? Schefter suggested that Elliott could be looking at a two-game suspension, forcing him out for Week One against the Giants and Week Two against the Broncos. It?s unclear why Elliott would be suspended only two games, as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said when he introduced the league?s domestic violence policy that a six-game suspension would be the standard for a first offense. (PFT)
They suspended other players who didn't have any charges brought up against them, so there is a standard set.
I wonder what all the drama and delay is about? Doesn't seem like it should be taking near this long to reach a decision.
With Monday's 4 pm deadline to sign franchise players looming, no deals close for Kirk Cousins, Le'Veon Bell, Trumaine Johnson at this time. ~Adam Schefter
D'Onta Foreman arrested for weapon, marijuana possession Texans rookie running back D'Onta Foreman was arrested for unlawful carrying of weapons and possession of marijuana on Sunday, according to the University of Texas Police Department. Cindy Posey, the Director of Communication for the University of Texas Police Department, said in a statement to NFL Media that "officers responded to a report of the smell of marijuana coming from three occupied vehicles" near a residential hall on campus at 12:24 a.m. on Sunday. After arriving to the scene, officers "discovered marijuana in each vehicle and also discovered a firearm in one of them." Foreman, the owner of the firearm, was subsequently arrested and booked into Travis County Jail. According to Travis County Sheriff's Department PIO Kristen Dark, Foreman was released from the jail at 11:59 a.m. CT on a surety bond. The Texans sent out a statement in response to the arrest, stating they "are aware of a situation involving D'Onta Foreman. We are gathering additional information and will have no further comment." NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport obtained this statement from Foreman's attorney Chip Lewis. "D'Onta was arrested by the University of Texas Police Department earlier today. He had traveled to Austin to visit friends. As he was leaving their residence, he was approached by police. Prior to a search of his vehicle, D'Onta alerted the officer that he had a handgun inside of his vehicle. This legal handgun was recently purchased by D'Onta and registered in his name. The handgun was properly secured inside of his vehicle as required by Texas law. "A passenger in D'Onta's vehicle was in possession of marijuana. D'Onta did not use or possess the marijuana. Upon making his bond, he will submit to a urinalysis to confirm he has not used marijuana. "D'Onta appreciates the professionalism of the officers involved in his arrest and in his booking at the Travis County Jail. We are confident this matter will be resolved justly once the State of Texas applies the applicable law to the facts." Houston took Foreman in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The running back accumulated 2,028 yards on the ground in his junior season at Texas in 2016, and received the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back. (NFL.com)
*HIGH* I hope this story turns out ok for this kid...No ties to Houston or him, but I am getting tired of watching these kids throw away such an enourmous opportunity.
How do you get arrested for a weapon that is legally purchased and properly secured by Texas law? Spin spin spin PR agents!
Who knows, he may not have been able to produce the paper copy of his gun license at the time, thus the arrest, but once produced, that charge could be dropped...OR, Texas could have a something attached to any drug related issue to add weapons charges if a weapon is present, once the licensed owner is exonerated of any drug related issue, the weapons charge would also be dropped.. There are several different reasons for charges to be handed down, and later released... One thing is for certain, headlines are MUCH sexier to state distinct charges, rather than any vague possible charges, whether they are substantiated or dependent on further review before becoming actual charges. The media wants click mongers, they don't care how they get them.
Dallas PD released a statement saying they are investigating an alleged assault stemming from a Sunday night altercation in which Ezekiel Elliott was reportedly involved. The statement did not mention Elliott or anyone else as a suspect, and the alleged victim does not know who assaulted him. The incident did take place at the same bar Elliott was reported to have had an altercation, however. Already expected to hand down a short suspension for Elliott stemming from domestic violence allegations last summer, an NFL spokesperson said the league is "aware of" this situation "and looking into it to understand the facts."
