Broncos' Paxton Lynch making push for starting QB

The quarterback competition is just starting to heat up in Denver.

Entering the Broncos' offseason program it seemed like Trevor Siemian might have the "upper hand" but Paxton Lynch is making a push for the starting quarterback job.

Mike Klis of KUSA-TV reports that something happened to the 2016 first-round draft pick in the final two weeks.

"His switch was flipped. He started to get it," Klis wrote for 9news.com. "He started to play as if he was doing just that - playing. Playing and not thinking about his protections and hot reads and coverages and delivering the ball on time."
Lynch agreed that he was finally starting to make some progress.

"Yeah, I mean the more reps I'm getting with these guys, the more I get to go against the defense and see the looks live compared to just on paper, it's helping me a lot," Lynch told Klis. "I think each practice I've progressively got better.
"I think it's made me and Trevor both better players going through it. Also, I think it's made the offense even better as well. Us competing, making us play better, making the guys around us play better."

Veterans report to training camp on July 26. If Lynch can continue to make great strides coach Vance Joseph will have to face a difficult task, hopefully before the start of the season. It's a decision Lynch isn't sure how it will go down.

"I guess it's up to the coaches to decide," Lynch said. "They get paid that kind of money to make those decisions. All I can do is go out there and play, get better every day and then whatever happens after that will happen." (NFL.com)

    ?Huge win? for Michael?Floyd

Yes, Vikings receiver Michael Floyd is going back to jail. No, he?d prefer not to. Yes, the fact that his sentence has been limited to only one day is being viewed by him and his representatives as a major victory.

One source with knowledge of the situation called it a ?huge win,? pointing out that the presiding judge had broad discretion. The judge could have, for example, forced Floyd to spend in jail the 96 days he was given the opportunity to serve on house arrest. Likewise, the judge could have imposed a fresh sentence of house arrest, with an order requiring Floyd to serve the term in Arizona.

As it stands, one day in jail and five days of house arrest represent a ?can I start serving it right now??-type of an outcome, allowing Floyd to quickly pay his debt to Arizona and then to focus on his efforts to make the team in Minnesota, and to have a major impact on the field in 2017. This outcome allows him to miss not a single day of training camp and the preseason.

Also, the decision possibly will have no impact on his looming suspension from the league for the extreme DUI guilty plea. He faces a baseline suspension of two games, and it can be increased based on aggravating factors. The positive alcohol test becomes less of a problem if, from the judge?s perspective, the glitch necessitated only one day in jail. (PFT)

Former Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green was charged Monday with felony child abuse after his 15-year-old daughter told police he punched her in the face.
Green, 40, is also charged with disorderly conduct in the incident late Sunday in the Green Bay suburb of Ledgeview.
According to a criminal complaint, Green's daughter told police that he struck her in the face in a dispute over getting her to do the dishes. She also said he threw her to the ground and against kitchen cabinets.
According to the complaint, Green told deputies he "may have" thrown his daughter to the ground and against cabinets. He said he slapped her in the head and believed he may have hit her glasses, causing a swollen eye, according to the complaint.
A court commissioner ordered Green's release Monday on a $2,500 signature bond after ordering him to have no contact with his daughter or others who may have witnessed the incident.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports Green's next court appearance was set for July 11, to give him time to hire an attorney. Green appeared in court via teleconference from the Brown County Jail. Lee Schuchart, a public defender representing Green at Monday's appearance, called the incident "a constitutional issue" involving "parental rights."
Lammi Sports Management, which has handled Green's appearances, had no immediate comment.
Green was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 2014. He is the team's all-time leading rusher and a four-time Pro Bowl selection.
Green starred at Nebraska, then spent the first two seasons of his 12-year NFL career in Seattle. He played for Houston in 2007-08, but spent most of his career in Green Bay, his last season coming in 2009. Courtesy of ABC news.

Apparently his football ability didn't translate into parenting skills.

Saints place Nick Fairley on NFI list, ending his season

Nick Fairley's 2017 season is over before it started, and his career could be in jeopardy.

The New Orleans Saints placed the defensive lineman on the reserve/non-football-injury list, the team announced Monday.

The move comes after Fairley consulted with multiple doctors regarding a heart condition he's played with since entering the NFL in 2011.

Earlier this month, coach Sean Payton announced that Fairley was seeking a third opinion on whether he should continue his playing career.

"He's gotten two professional opinions," Payton said at the time. "The first one was one that advised that he shouldn't play football again. The second opinion was a little different, and he's getting a third opinion or he's already gotten a third opinion, we're waiting on that opinion.

"The things we know are this, it's obviously something significant and serious that we've got to pay attention to, obviously both for Nick and for the club. So we're hopeful and yet we're guarded because of the type of condition that we're talking about."
In the short term, the news is a blow to the Saints who signed the 29-year-old to a four-year, $28 million contract this offseason to be an anchor in the middle of their defensive line. Losing Fairley weakens an already shallow front seven.

In the long view, the condition could threaten the rest of Fairley's career. The heart issue was flagged during Fairley's combine workout in 2011, but he was still drafted with the No. 13 overall pick by the Detroit Lions. In six seasons, he's compiled 170 tackles and 20.5 sacks. Fairley started all 16 games last year for the Saints and earned his best season, with 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

Fairley will miss the 2017 season. Whether he plays another down in the NFL remains to be seen. (NFL.com)

This is the one that the players vote on. It's based on 2016 but it's an 'eye of the beholder' kind of thing.

Ok, I was wondering how JJ Watt even made the list considering how many games he missed with injury. Reminds me of Jonathan Ogden and Troy Polamalu both having probowl spots in seasons they played 5 or less games

The pro bowl is an interesting way that players and fans both attach significance to a players career. It's sometimes completely arbitrary yet it holds weight in conversations more than it probably should.

Putting together a top 100 based on a combination of statistics and game day/situational impact might be interesting...

  12. ravens_R_#1 Legend Ravens

Yeah, the probowl has been overrated to me for years now. I simply can no longer base a player's skill level on that since there's an obvious aura of popularity involved in the votings. Plus fans are heavily biased.

I just read earlier, prior to seeing that list, that Watt felt his inclusion was a joke. That's what lead to me actually looking at the list in that link and seeing where he was ranked. But honestly, no rankings will ever be universally accepted anyway

That was a nice Top 100 list. Sure like to make a football team out of those guys.

Glad to see 3 Vikings made it too. I kinda like the Vikings a little bit.

Just to be clear...Troy was never selected to a Pro Bowl in any season he played less than 11 games in. Only twice did he play less than that many games...5 in 2009, no Pro Bowl, and 7 in 2012 with no Pro Bowl.

You are probably thinking of 2007 when he played in 11 games, had 0 INTs but 3 forced fumbles, and made the Pro Bowl mostly on reputation.

Between this and Terron Armstead's torn labrum, the Saints are looking like one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2017
