Ah, I gotcha. Yeah, that's perfectly reasonable skepticism. You know how it is - gotta keep the locals interested, even if it means hyping a deal that was likely never going to happen.
I can believe that the Eagles offered Maclin very little to return. They likely told him something like: "We'd love to have you back and we'd surely find a fit for you but we can't commit to much because we already have WRs and minimal cap and honestly don't need you but still..." In the end he took the money and larger role. Don't blame him at all.
Cam Newton won't throw at Panthers minicamp Cam Newton won't throw at Panthers minicamp after all. Just days after saying he anticipated?the star quarterback making his return to throwing after offseason shoulder surgery during Carolina's three-day camp this week, coach Ron Rivera "got ahead of himself by one week," Bill Voth wrote on the team's official website. Though Newton won't throw on the side with head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion as Rivera anticipated, it's important to note the quarterback is still on schedule with his recovery. The plan for Newton, per Vermillion, was to throw on the side after 12 weeks (June 22), throw with the team 16 weeks after surgery and be ready for training camp in July. The 12-week recovery time for Newton is next week, and the plan for the QB is to make his on-the-side throwing with Vermillion as scheduled then. (NFL.com)
Lawyer suggests lawsuit could be filed over Raiders?move As the Raiders prepare to move to the land of gambling, their current home could be placing a different sort of bet. Via Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal, lawyer Jim Quinn suggested possible litigation during a rally in Oakland aimed at keeping pro football in town. ?We will look at all legal options,? Quinn said. ?There may be some legal claims that can be asserted.? One possibility would be to try to retain the team?s name, colors, and records, like Cleveland did when the Browns moved to Baltimore in 1996. It seems unlikely that owner Mark Davis would make that kind of concession without a fight. It?s also unlikely that the NFL would commit to giving an expansion franchise to Oakland at a time when no one is suggesting that it would make sense to grow the NFL beyond its current collection of 32 franchises, which has been in place since the Texans joined the league in 2002. The San Francisco 49ers announced on Tuesday that they have signed quarterback C.J. Beathard to a four-year deal. With the signing, the 49ers now have nine of the team?s 10 2017 draft picks under contract. Beathard (6-2, 215) was the second of the 49ers two third-round picks (104th overall) in this year?s NFL draft out of the University of Iowa. In four seasons with Iowa, he played in 41 games (28 starts) and completed 454 of 782 attempts for 5,562 yards and 40 touchdowns. Beathard finished his collegiate career ranked sixth in school history in career touchdown passes (40), seventh in completions (454) and attempts (782), and eighth in passing yards (5,562). In 2016, he was named a captain and earned Academic and honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. In addition, he was the recipient of the team?s Hayden Fry Award, Most Valuable Player Award (offense) and the Players Choice Award (offense). Last season, he started all 13 games and completed 170 of 301 attempts for 1,929 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Hawkeyes.
Ask and ye shall receive... sometimes Most times NFL players ask for a contract extension and don't receive it. Not so for Jason Peters, who publicly requested an extension on Tuesday. Wednesday he got it. The Philadelphia Eagles announced they signed the Pro Bowl offensive tackle to a one-year extension that will keep him in Philly through the 2019 season. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported the extension puts Peters on the books for a $32.5 million max over the next three years, with $15.5 million in guarantees. It includes an $8 million signing bonus, per a source informed of the deal.
The Associated Press' Tom Withers reports No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett will undergo "numerous tests" after re-injuring his left foot/ankle at Wednesday's minicamp practice. It's the same ankle/foot that slowed Garrett as a college junior. The injury limited him at OTAs and was aggravated on Wednesday. "His reaction made me think it could be significant," Withers said of Garrett's injury. The aggravation occurred on a non-contact play, forcing Garrett to limp off the field.
Alex Boone: Teddy Bridgewater looks great, determined to?return Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater still has no timetable to return to the field, 10 months after suffering a serious knee injury in practice. But one of his linemen is confident Bridgewater is going to be back. Alex Boone said this morning on PFT Live that Bridgewater is making significant strides and looks like he?s going to return to the field at some point. ?He looks great,? Boone said. ?And the one thing I love about Teddy is he?s so determined. You talk to him and he?s determined to get back and he wants to play, and I think the way he?s approaching this is awesome. He?s got a chip-on-his-shoulder mentality and I think he?s going to come out well on the other end.? Still, Sam Bradford is the starter in Minnesota now, and Boone said everyone understands that it?s Bradford?s team. ?He?s a lot more into the system now,? Boone said. ?Just the way he?s kind of carrying himself. He?s a true leader when you look at him.? (PFT)
i don't know whether they are just jinxed or doomed no matter what they do ! Jeez. I know the NFL has these mini-camps for a reason, but so many guys get hurt in them. There's no way around them, but damn! It's not even August and he's hurt.
nice move by the Eagles. Peters will retire as an Eagle and he can mentor the younger guys as well. Good all around!!
^^ the Guys on Comcast Sportsnet really praised him last night! I think I am more excited and anxious for this Eagles season than many past ones. I am ready for September football! ^^ saw this gem on a sports website ! hahaha
How many games do you realistically see the Eagles winning this season? I see about 8-8 record. Wentz hasn't proven to be the QB to do better than that yet. Only his second season so that could change. It isn't like he was rookie of the year or even close to it.
