Matt Jones fifth-string on Redskins' RB depth chart Matt Jones is buried so far down the Washington Redskins' depth chart he doesn't see the point in participating in organized team activities. NFL Network's Michael Silver reported?Thursday that Jones has been told by coach Jay Gruden he is the team's No. 5 running back, motivating at least part of his decision to stay away from OTAs. The Redskins' roster lists six running backs: Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine, Chris Thompson, Mack Brown, Jones and Keith Marshall. Perine, a fourth-round rookie, will battle Kelley for first- and second-down snaps while Thompson takes the third-down duties. If the Redskins keep a fourth back, Brown makes the most sense at this stage, given his special teams ability. At this point, Jones has no reason to attend workouts before a trade or release, but Gruden said Wednesday he expected the 6-foot-2, 232-pound runner to show up to workouts. "I hope so. I expect him to be," Gruden said, via the team's official website. "He's on our roster, he's eating up a spot. We all know that this is voluntary, so there's really nothing that we can do. We'd like everybody to be here without a doubt, but at the end of the day, Jordan Reed is in Miami working out, Trent [Williams] is working out in Oklahoma, Matt Jones chose not to be here, so we obviously want people to work together and learn together, but it is voluntary at the end of the day." Unlike Reed and Williams, Jones isn't in the Redskins' plans. Gruden can expect anything he wants. Jones isn't showing up. The Redskins can hold out hope that someone will give them a low-level, conditional trade offer for a young, bruising back with a fumbling problem. Realistically, Washington likely will cut Jones at some point. The question is how far into the summer it'll wait before pulling the trigger. (NFL.com)
John Clayton was all business... very good reporter and commentator... I suspect he will land another gig, he's too talented and someone will snag him, imo.
Ravens TE Dennis Pitta suffers hip injury during OTAs The Baltimore Ravens suffered another injury during OTAs. A day after corner Tavon Young tore his ACL, veteran tight end Dennis Pitta re-injured his hip, the team announced. It's brutal news for Pitta, who nearly had his career end after multiple hip injuries wiped away all but seven games from 2013-2015. The 31-year-old bounced back in a big way last season, playing all 16 games and leading the Ravens with 86 receptions -- the most among tight ends in the NFL -- and going for 729 yards and two touchdowns. The team's official website reported that there was no contact when Pitta suffered the injury. The possession tight end was apparently stretching to make a catch, fell to the ground and tried to get up, but couldn't put weight on his leg. (NFL.com)
Chiefs release Maclin. Already hearing how the Eagles should sign him back. Well it's better than DeSean I guess.
John Dorsey apparently doesn't like a receiver who can catch the ball. Three and out should be the new mantra.
NFL to allow liquor commercials this?season Beer commercials have been a major part of NFL games for so decades. But the NFL has drawn the line at hard liquor. Until now. Reversing a longstanding policy, the NFL has informed NBC, ESPN, CBS and FOX that they can run up to four 30-second commercials per game advertising hard liquor, the Wall Street Journal reports. Previously, liquor was among the products the NFL wouldn?t allow to be advertised during its games. Still, the NFL is going to be restrictive about what the commercials can include: They can?t be football-themed, they can?t be aimed at underage drinkers and they have to include a socially responsible message such as a reminder not to drive drunk. A maximum of four liquor commercials can add per game. The NFL still bans plenty of types of advertising, often for reasons that are hard to understand. Commercials for condoms and other forms of birth control, for instance, are banned, even as commercials for erectile dysfunction drugs are among the most common ads on NFL games. Energy drink commercials are also banned, as are commercials for any type of gambling and even for Las Vegas tourism ? an odd choice considering the NFL has approved the Raiders? move to Las Vegas and will be courting tourists to buy tickets. The league also won?t allow marijuana ads during games, even local ads in states where marijuana is legal. And supplement distributors like GNC can?t buy ads. So the NFL will still turn down a lot of potential advertising revenue over concerns about the shield being tarnished by the ?wrong? kinds of advertisers. But liquor companies are no longer considered the ?wrong? kinds of advertisers. *HIGH* *DRINK*
The alcohol industry must have made an offer they cant refuse... and that's the excuse they had to have, big bucks.
Nick Fairley's NFL future in question due to medical issue New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Nick Fairley has been away from the team's organized team activities in recent weeks, sources with knowledge of Fairley's situation have told NFL.com in recent days. His absence comes in light of?medical tests that have put his NFL future in question, as Fox Sports' Jennifer Hale reported. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the medical issue being tested is a heart condition that previously came up in Fairley's pre-draft physical. The lineman has played with the condition for seven years in the league, Rapoport adds. Fairley, who signed a four-year, $28 million deal with the Saints in March, visited a cardiologist last month and since then has been away from OTAs and out of communication with many of his teammates, sources say, adding that players who usually speak to Fairley on a regular basis have been unable to reach him.
LeSean McCoy confident he can bring Maclin to Bills It's only been a few days since Jeremy Maclin's surprise release from the Kansas City Chiefs and he's already being recruited by an old teammate. Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy expressed at his charity softball game Sunday morning that he wants to be reunited with his friend. "I know he could help us out tremendously," McCoy told ESPN. "I've been doing my recruiting already, and don't be surprised if it happens." He said that he was the first person Maclin reached out to after being cut. Both Maclin and McCoy were drafted by the Eagles in 2009 and played in Philadelphia through 2014. Maclin would be an immediate boost for the Bills' target-needy offense. "That would be cool to have another weapon on the offense," McCoy said. "But you never know. A lot of things would have to work out for that to happen. You know how the business goes." The Bills have $12.6 million in salary cap space, according to OverTheCap.com. Maclin would be great insurance for injury-prone wideout Sammy Watkins and would also be a great mentor for rookie wide receiver Zay Jones. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor would love to add a veteran target to the roster. "Would love to have a guy like him on our team competing and coming out and making plays for us," Taylor said. "Especially means a lot to our wide receiver room, putting another veteran guy with a whole bunch of talent and still potential left to reach his best. I would love to have him." Recruiting helped Jameis Winston land DeSean Jackson. Let's see if the same will happen in Buffalo. (NFL.com)
Eagles are strapped for cash. I don't think they can afford him unless they cut some guys. I would love to see him back in Eagles green, but not for huge money he will probably want.
