Other GMs would likely (can't say 100%) have noticed there was no way Dallas would hold him. Other teams even in a bidding war would likely be able to get Romo for less. It's the reason most players get released instead of held onto so long around the start or as FA is starting to slow down.
IF Romo still wanted to be in the league he would still be in the league. He is going into broadcasting because that is what he wants to do. That is being reported by more than just ESPN Romo is ready to ride into the sunset it had nothing to do with Dallas keeping him
If he was let loose earlier he would have been contacted by teams without it being tampering. It could have gotten serious. Instead networks were doing their tampering because it's legal. Jerry Jones is probably wondering if CBS can forfeit a draft pick and give it to the Cowboys.
Let's not make this out like Dallas is the only team to hold onto a player in hopes of getting some sort of compensation back instead of out-right releasing him. Teams are still releasing players now - didn't Dion Jordan just get released a few days ago? Chase Daniel didn't get released until mid-March. And who gives a crap if Houston and Denver are pissed? It isn't Dallas' job to make other teams happy. There was no need to rush Romo out the door. The draft hasn't taken place, OTA's are more than a month away, mandatory minicamp is two months away...
That comment was basically about all on the comments Jerry made about being good to Romo. He didn't have to but we learned he has no loyalties but to himself. He has the right to do so but he wasn't genuine. Also I don't know about the Dion Jordan situation but the Eagles were originally looking to trade Chase Daniel only because of guaranteed money. They only released him because they preferred Foles when he was available. The moment they signed Foles they had too many QBs and obviously no leverage of likely keeping Daniel and thus released him almost right away. It wasn't the same thing there.
You're assuming that Romo had no part in this. Most reports I've read indicate the Jones' and Romo talked about the situation. If the Birds knew they wanted to get rid of Daniel, why didn't they "do right by him" and just cut bait much earlier?
They never knew. They wanted to keep him because the money was too much to cut him. Chase wanted out so they tried to trade him. Releasing him before getting a new backup made no sense. They apparently really like Foles enough to waste a ton of money. They were able to get him and as soon as they did they abandoned trading Chase and let him go. If they never signed a free agent QB they liked they likely would have gone with Daniel for 1 more year since his money was fully guaranteed this year. Just saying it's a completely different situation. Plus they never made a comment to "do him right".
Eagles fill a big hole at DT with Bennie Logan gone. Moving down in he 3rd round doesn't bother me at all. For the mock it will suck a bit but in real life I don't care as I can't control who they take.
Guess it's all moot at this point - Romo's come out and stated Dallas did right by him, giving him his release so he can pursue whatever venture he wants, allowing him to keep his bonus (instead of returning it had he retired), and keeping the option open to returning to playing if he wants.
I'm sure Jerry wanted to do Romo right. It's no secret that Jerry was a big Romo fan, so obviously he wanted to do him right, but he's also an owner of an nfl team, and his first priority is to do the organization right, and that's exactly what he did. I've been a fan of the decisions Jerry has made as of late, and this is another move he made that i feel was smart.
I agree. I didn't see what the big deal was about deciding to hold onto Romo a little longer to try to make a deal and get something back in return. When healthy, Romo is one of the better QBs in the league, and he'd clearly have been an upgrade over what Houston and Denver are currently trotting out there. There weren't OTAs or minicamps going on, so it's not like he was missing valuable practice time. It just seemed much ado about nothing.
Marshawn Lynch is close to returning to football. During his visit with the Raiders on Wednesday, Lynch told the team that he intends to un-retire and play football again, sources told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The power back met with Raiders coach Jack Del Rio at the team's facility to discuss a return to the gridiron. However, the 30-year-old's contract is still held by the Seahawks, which means Seattle would have to release Lynch or the Raiders would have to trade for him in order for Oakland to acquire his rights. According to Rapoport, Wednesday's meeting was cleared by the Seahawks. The Raiders thought of it as a "fact-finding mission" on the enigmatic, five-time Pro Bowler, who has not played in a game since Jan. 17, 2016.
From the speculation files... The Seahawks have been open about discussing the fact that teams have approached them about trading for cornerback Richard Sherman and the list of teams that they?ve spoken to reportedly includes a team that is rarely open about discussing their plans on any front. Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports that the Patriots have ?expressed interest? in making a deal for Sherman, although he adds that other teams have pursued the Seattle cornerback more aggressively at this point in talks with the Seahawks. Howe suggests that could change if cornerback Malcolm Butler winds up playing elsewhere. Butler is a restricted free agent and has been pursued by the Saints, although their coach Sean Payton has said that the team won?t sign him to an offer sheet that would require them to send the 11th overall pick to New England as compensation. Butler would need to sign his tender in order to facilitate a trade for different compensation and has until April 21 to sign an offer sheet with another club. In their discussions of a potential Sherman trade, General Manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll have each downplayed the likelihood of a deal going down. The right offer from the Patriots could change that, but it doesn?t appear that will happen unless another domino falls first in New England.
I don't believe so... Lynch officially retired from football in May of 2016, so I believe he is a FA.
After further review... Lynch's desire to join his hometown team in Oakland is merely the first stage of the process. The running back's contract is still held by the Seattle Seahawks, who would have to release Lynch or work out a trade with the Raiders.
It seems odd to me too. The Saints have Mark Ingram and a pass happy offense. Just seems weird for AP to be visiting the Saints.
