That missed call had a 100% negative impact on the outcome of the game and there should be some form of punishment involved.

I can see no obvious reason that call was not made.

 

If you can rewind a tape for 5 minutes 1,000 times to see if a knee/ankle touches before a ball comes out.. Why in the hell can't they make a rule that a BLATANT missed call can't be overturned? This, "well it isn't reviewable" is bullshit... Make it all reviewable or make none of it reviewable.

NFL are cowards. Punish the refs and if they are scared of the union let them bring it to court and have their incompetence called out.

 

So the ref in the back has his view blocked by players between them. But is no on else form another angle looking? EDIT: So there is another ref standing above the A and he looked right at it and not after the fact and missed it. That guy should be reprimanded.

Sky judge should be implemented ASAP. Why is it wrong for rules to be enforced properly? Why is it unfair for a ref to see more from above if a team is essentially cheating?

 

You guys are all making great points. A Beautiful TNF game was tainted and marred beyond belief by incompetence. Im waiting (without holding my breath) for Goodell to pass some sort of judgement and amendment for what happened. Not only was this game completely ruined by the Refs and Goodell's League... it also can have effected Divisional (NFCN) implications, playoff seedings and future Draft seedings. The back judge had one area and one job to do... he clearly whiffed. I still cant believe this stuff is still occurring at this level when its an obvious and easy fix.

Also, (then I'll get off this horse) when we live in an era where every commercial is a gambling site and the NFL allows these things to happen, how can we blame people for thinking this whole damn show is rigged. If you wanna take out the uncertainty and speculations that swirl around the NFL, they need to get their acts together and make 'integrity' mandatory!

PS - that crew last night needs to be schooled and busted down to ball-boys. Then Id go to DraftKings and put $5000 down on them screwing that up.

Isn't a safety a defacto "turnover"?

Aren't all turnovers deemed reviewable?

During a review is an infraction not allowed to overturn a ca.... Oh, yeah, there inlies the problem. Even though certain things are not reviewable, they CERTAINLY should be allowed to be overturned upon review of another reviewable action, should they not?

In 2021, the NFL expanded its replay rule to allow replay officials and designated members of the officiating department to assist on-field officials in specific, limited game situations.
Replay officials and designated members of the NFL officiating department can advise on-field crews based on clear and obvious video evidence. The expansion of the replay assistance rule facilitates the administration of the game and limits stoppages on certain rulings.

How does Replay Assist Work?
Replay officials located in NFL stadium replay booths and designated members of the NFL officiating department in Art McNally GameDay Central at the league office in New York may provide on-field officials with objective information regarding on-field rulings and the correct application of playing rules.

Before, replay officials were only permitted to provide input on limited administrative issues and during replay reviews. Now, they can proactively assist in situations where clear and obvious video evidence is quickly available to assist the on-field officials on objective rulings.

The new assistance rule applies to plays where there is clear and obvious video evidence to proactively address specific objective rulings, such as spot of the ball or a foul, complete or incomplete pass, and touching of the ball or a line:

• Penalty enforcement
• Confirmation of the proper down
• Spot of a foul
• Game clock administration
• Possession of a loose ball
• Complete or incomplete pass
• Loose ball touching a boundary line, goal line, or end line
• Location of the football or a player in relation to a boundary line, line of scrimmage, line to gain, or goal line
• Player down by contact (when not ruled down on the field)

For the 2024 season, the NFL Competition Committee expanded replay assist to include objective input on:

• Roughing the passer
• Late hits out of bounds
• Intentional grounding

All of the things highlighted in red relate to the call last night...EXCEPT, it can only be used when a foul has been called, not when a foul did not get called. It's biased bullshit.

So, had Young grabbed the chest of Darnold, but a ref threw a flag for a facemask when Darnold's head turned... the replay official could have, and probably would have, sent a message to the headset to let them know while huddling that the hand had actually not touched the facemask. At that point the ref picks up the flag and states, there was no penalty on the play.. Safety is the call...

This is an example of how wrong the replay enforcement is in the NFL. It only protects it going in one direction. When SEVEN officials miss a blatantly obvious call, it can't be corrected, but when one of the seven guys gets overzealous and throws the yellow hanky, it can. We have the technology to correct this... it needs to be done.

 

Ravens' Roquan Smith used hip-drop tackle on Chris Godwin

TAMPA, Fla. -- Baltimore Ravens inside linebacker Roquan Smith has been fined after the NFL ruled Friday that he used a hip-drop tackle on Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Chris Godwin on Monday night, a source told ESPN.

Smith's tackle on Godwin with 1:04 remaining in regulation resulted in the receiver suffering a dislocated left ankle. Smith, who can be seen on the play pulling on Godwin's left leg, will get a league-mandated fine of $16,833, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Smith can appeal the ruling.

The source also said Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield will not be disciplined for using Zyn -- a smoke-free nicotine pouch -- on the sideline during the game, which television cameras picked up.

The NFL prohibits the use of tobacco-related products on the field and during interviews. The source said Mayfield would receive a letter reminding him that he should not be using the product on the sideline, and he could be subject to a fine if it happens again.

Some prominent sites were reporting that the Rams were fielding calls for Kupp, so the rumors started flying briefly that if Kupp might be being shopped, why not Stafford also. It was a just a slow day in the media world, I guess.

 

Chris Olave clears concussion protocol, good to go Sunday

The Saints have been riddled by injuries through their five-game losing streak, but they are set to get some pieces back in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

Wide receiver Chris Olave has cleared the concussion protocol and is on track to return to action this weekend. Olave missed last Thursday’s loss to the Broncos after being injured in Week Five.

Tight end Taysom Hill is also off the injury report. He has missed two games with a rib injury, but was a full practice participant the last two days.

Quarterback Derek Carr (oblique) is listed as doubtful and head coach Dennis Allen said earlier this week that he hopes to have him back for Week Nine. Guard Nick Saldiveri (shoulder) and wide receiver Cedrick Wilson (hip) have been ruled out.

In regard to Jayde Danials, Multiple reports say a final decision on Daniels won’t be made until pregame warmups, but that Daniels is trending in the direction of going. So, the 'flexed' Willians, Daniels (Bears, Commanders, in case your incoherently hung-over) game looks like it might fall into place.

With the 49ers... It is being reported Samual and Kittle are 'expected' to play.

 

NFL 2024 Week 8 early inactives: Tee Higgins is inactive for Bengals

Wide receiver Tee Higgins was added to the Bengals’ injury report on Friday and listed as questionable due to the quad injury that will keep him out on Sunday. Higgins landed on the team’s inactive list for their matchup with the Eagles.

Higgins missed the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury and has 29 catches for 341 yards and three touchdowns in the last five games.

The Bengals didn’t have any other players with injury designations, but one is enough when it is as significant a player as Higgins.
