Kyle Shanahan is 0-3 in Super Bowls, a record no coach has overcome to win a ring

Kyle Shanahan lost his first Super Bowl appearance as the Falcons’ offensive coordinator after the 2016 season. And he has now lost two Super Bowls as the 49ers’ head coach. And that 0-3 start in Super Bowls is something no head coach or coordinator before him has overcome to win a Super Bowl.

Shanahan is the fifth head coach or coordinator in NFL history to start his career 0-3 in Super Bowls, and none of the others ever won a Super Bowl, according to NFL Research.

Marv Levy went 0-4 in Super Bowls as the Bills’ head coach.

Bud Grant went 0-4 in Super Bowls as the Vikings’ head coach.

Jerry Burns went 0-4 under Grant as offensive coordinator of the Vikings and never got to a Super Bowl as a head coach after that.

Ted Marchibroda lost a Super Bowl as offensive coordinator in Washington and lost two more as offensive coordinator in Buffalo, and went on to become a head coach for two different teams but never got back to a Super Bowl.

Shanahan’s well-documented Super Bowl struggles include his team blowing double-digit leads in all three of the Super Bowls he has coached in. With an impressive 49ers roster heading into this season, Shanahan’s team may return to the Super Bowl again in seven months, but his history may cast a dark cloud over any future Super Bowl appearance.

Buffalo Bills rookie receiver Keon Coleman is expected to immediately step into a sizable role after the club parted ways with Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis this offseason.

Despite the high expectations, the second-round pick said he feels no added pressure to replace the production from those veterans.

"Not at all," Coleman told Bryant McFadden of CBS Sports. "All I gotta do is come in, be myself, be who I'm supposed to be ... Because I'm not Gabe, I'm not Stef, I'm just Keon. We got a lot of other guys that definitely complement my game ... along with (quarterback) Josh (Allen), to make things work."

The 6-foot-3 Coleman brings size and the ability to snag pigskins in tight quarters, both needed in the Bills offense as they replace their top two receivers. The fit, along with Allen's glowing comments about the rookie, have raised expectations surrounding Coleman's Year 1 potential.

We've seen rookies hit the ground running in recent seasons, from Justin Jefferson to Ja'Marr Chase to Garrett Wilson to Puka Nacua. If Coleman puts up a season anywhere close to those playmakers, the Bills will have filled the WR void splendidly with a second-round pick.

"As a coach, Monte was a true innovator who got the best out of his players and helped create one of the signature defenses of the early 2000s," the Glazer family, which owns the Buccaneers and inducted Kiffin into the team's Ring of Honor three years ago, said in a statement.

"His passionate and energetic leadership style resonated with all his players, and he was instrumental in our first Super Bowl win and the success of Hall of Famers such as Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch and Ronde Barber," the Glazers added. "Off the field, Monte was kind, genuine, gracious and always had a positive attitude. He was very special to the Buccaneers organization and our family."

    He was 84.

During last season’s Cowboys-49ers game, San Francisco tight end George Kittle wore a shirt saying, “Fuck Dallas” under his uniform. Kittle briefly lifted his jersey to display the shirt, and for that the NFL fined him $13,659. Kittle knew the fine was coming and didn’t care.

The documentary series Receiver shows Kittle talking with teammates on the sideline about his decision to wear the shirt and the $15,000 fine he was expecting.

“How much of a fine is that? Fifteen?” Kittle said. “I’m gonna get fined so much money.”

But even after receiving the fine, Kittle said he may wear the same shirt again.

“I don’t regret it one bit. Not one bit, and I might do it again given the opportunity,” Kittle said.

Kittle will get the opportunity in Week Eight, when the 49ers face the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

Dustin Hopkins is set for a longer run as the kicker in Cleveland.

Hopkins has agreed to a three-year extension with the Browns. Hopkins is set to make a base salary of $2.875 million this season and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that he is set to make $15.9 million through the 2027 season under the terms of the extension.

The Browns traded a seventh-round pick to the Chargers for Hopkins last August after deciding to part ways with Cade York. He was 33-of-36 on field goals and 24-of-26 on extra points to help the Browns make it to the playoffs. York, who was a 2022 fourth-round pick, re-signed with the Browns in March, but the Hopkins extension would seem to put an end to any thoughts of a competition.

Hopkins kicked in Washington from 2015-2021 and is 223-of-260 on field goals and 245-of-260 on extra points for his career.

It’s official: Bengals receiver Tee Higgins will play 2024 under the franchise tag.

Monday’s deadline passed for players who received the franchise tag to sign a long-term deal, and Higgins will be the lone NFL player to play this season on the tag.

He signed his franchise tag last month, guaranteeing him $21.816 million this season.

Higgins is scheduled to become a free agent in 2025, and the Bengals likely let him walk as No. 1 receiver Ja’Marr Chase also is seeking a contract extension.

Jaguars edge rusher Joshua Hines-Allen, Ravens defensive tackle Justin Madubuike, Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson and Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. all signed long-term deals after being tagged, while Giants edge rusher Brian Burns and Titans cornerback L’Jarius Sneed signed new deals after being traded from their former teams.

Patriots safety Kyle Dugger, the only transition tag recipient, also signed a long-term deal.

Higgins needs a big year after catching only 42 of 77 targets for 656 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games last season as a rib injury and a hamstring issue slowed him.

I don’t think Ayuck is worth 30 million a season. He’s the fifth wheel on a highly explosive offense. You have to cover McCaffree, Samuel and Kittle. Before some idiot team pays him 30+ million a season they ought to make sure they have at least two other playmakers that are better than him.

  14. StlCrtn Franchise Player Steelers

He’s the best WR on the team. The dude has balled out once the 49ers got consistency at QB. He’s definitely not the 5th wheel on that team.

His route running is going to keep him open all damn day no matter what roster he's on.

Im curious why the 49ers are saying there will not be a trade. Is this just an attempt to raise the offer so the 9ers get the best possible return?

And just if your curious... Williams is signing a four-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $39 million, according to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones. It includes a $25.5 million signing bonus, per ESPN. Odunze - According to Pelissero, it's a four-year, fully-guaranteed $22.7 million deal with a fifth-year option.

I feel like it’s possibly. All you need is two teams to bid against each other. Unfortunately, they owe Deebo a chunk of change still, otherwise Aiyuk probably gets his payday.

I don’t think he gets $30 a year, but realistically for his age and skill set, 25-28 is very realistic.

I believe Aiyuk has already turned down an offer from the 49ers for $26M/year which would put him at 8th over-all according to Over-the-Cap... he might land up kicking himself for not taking it.
