Head-first hits are illegal unless the runner dipped their heads down, and even then it can't be obvious head hunting.
Only the QB passing and defenseless receivers are protected. When running the ball they never call a head shot.
The rule got changed 3 years ago. This is a clear penalty.
I think they just goofed the rule book. Well then again judgement calls are wrong often. That being said it affects nothing in the game. Wasn't the ensuing kick a touchback anyways?
Like the judgement call that the Redskins had possession in the pile even though the ball wasn't even there.
After seeing that play from a different angle I can understand that one a bit better. Looked like the ball popped out, Redskins had it then the pileup and Johnson walked away after play was over. Can't tell for sure if the Redskins player had possession or not, but that's my guess on how the ref saw it, and there is no way you overturn that call no matter which way it was called on the field. I don't believe that very much, I also feel the Browns got screwed on the call

There is the key as to why it was not a penalty he did not lead with the top/crown of the helmet.
I would like to see a shot that is not a paused 1-moment look frames well after initial contact. From full speed it seems it isn't the side at first impact.
I never thought it was the crown but I do believe it still counts as the top of his helmet, the top of the side though. Another dumb judgement situation and honestly in the spirit of the rule this should and in the offseason will be a penalty.
