Browns stun Ravens with 33-31 comeback victory

When Browns cornerback Greg Newsome returned a Lamar Jackson interception for a touchdown with 8:16 left in the fourth quarter, it looked like Cleveland was going to tie the game at 31.

But that’s when kicker Dustin Hopkins missed the extra point to keep the Ravens ahead by one.

In the end, however, Hopkins was able to completely redeem himself.

Hopkins nailed a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give Cleveland a 33-31 victory over Baltimore.

The Browns trailed the Ravens by 14 twice and 15 for most of the third quarter. The Ravens got off to a hot start with Kyle Hamilton’s pick six on the second play from scrimmage. Then rookie running back Keaton Mitchell took in a 39-yard run to give Baltimore a 14-0 lead.

Then Odell Beckham Jr. caught a 40-yard touchdown against his former team to make the score 24-9 with 12:29 in the third period.

But Cleveland narrowed the lead to 24-17 with Kareem Hunt’s 3-yard touchdown and a successful two-point conversion. And the club was in a position to tie the game at the start of the fourth quarter when Myles Garrett’s sack on Jackson forced a punt.

That’s when Browns returner James Proche fumbled a fair catch. The Ravens recovered it at the Cleveland 12.

With some defensive penalties, it took seven plays, but the Ravens got in the end zone with Gus Edward’s 1-yard run to make the score 31-17.

Undeterred, Cleveland’s comeback went into overdrive. Elijah Moore caught a 10-yard touchdown with 8:57 on the clock to make the score 31-24. That was followed by Newsome’s pick six with 8:16 in the fourth quarter.

In their four-minute offense, the Ravens managed one first down but nothing more.

Starting with the ball at the 20, the Browns made the Ravens use the rest of their timeouts, got down to the Baltimore 22, and sent Hopkins out for a 40-yard game-winning attempt.

    He nailed it.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson ended the game 20-of-34 for 213 yards with a touchdown and interception. He also rushed eight times for 37 yards, including a key 16-yard scramble on the final drive.

Jerome Ford had 107 yards on 17 carries. Kareem Hunt picked up 32 yards with a touchdown on 10 carries. Amari Cooper had six receptions for 98 yards.

On the other side, Jackson was 13-of-23 for 223 yards with a touchdown and two picks. Jackson was the leading rusher, gaining 41 yards on eight attempts. Zay Flowers led with five catches for 73 yards.

Now at 6-3, the Browns will play the Steelers at home in Week 11.

The 7-3 Ravens have a quick turnaround, as they’ll play the Bengals on Thursday night.

Report: Kwon Alexander suffered a torn Achilles

The Steelers got a win over the Packers on Sunday, but they lost a linebacker on the way to the win.

Kwon Alexander left the game in the first quarter and did not return. After the 23-19 win, head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that Alexander suffered a “serious” lower body injury and that his prognosis is “not promising.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Alexander suffered a torn Achilles. Once the team confirms that’s the case, Alexander will be shut down for the year.

Alexander signed with the Steelers this offseason and he sealed their Week Nine win over the Titans with an interception. He also had 41 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble in his first eight games of the season.

Texans win fifth game, most since 2019, with last-play, 30-27 victory over Bengals

    upload_2023-11-12_17-51-16.png

It shouldn’t have come down to what it came down to, but a replacement kicker hit a 38-yard field goal on the final play to give the Texans a dramatic 30-27 win.

Matt Ammendola, subbing for the injured Ka’imi Fairbairn, slid the kick just inside the right upright.

Both teams now are 5-4, the most wins for Houston since 2019. The Bengals entered the game having won four in a row.

It was the second consecutive week the Texans have won at the end of the game. They stunned the Bucs with a 40-second drive, scoring with six seconds left on a C.J. Stroud throw to Tank Dell for a 39-37 win.

Sunday’s game should not have come down to the end.

The Texans led 27-17 with less than four minutes to play before Houston cracked open the door.

Stroud had three turnovers, with two fumbles deep in Cincinnati territory in the first half and a late interception to keep the Bengals in it. With 3:41 remaining, facing a third-and-two, Stroud rolled right and tried to hit Dell.

Instead, Cam Taylor-Britt undercut him and returned the interception 30 yards to the Houston 4 before Dell’s diving tackle. The Bengals scored two plays later on Joe Mixon’s 1-yard run with 3:18 remaining. That cut the Texans’ lead to 27-24.

Stroud had only one career interception before Sunday.

The Bengals got the ball back after Houston’s three-and-out, and went 58 yards in six plays. Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd dropped a would-be, go-ahead touchdown that hit him in the hands with no one around him with 1:37 left. It was his second drop of the day. The Bengals kicked a chip-shot field goal with 1:33 left to tie it.

It was way too much time for Stroud.

    He directed a six-play, 55-yard drive to set up Ammendola’s game-winning kick.

Stroud finished 23-of-39 for 356 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a score. Noah Brown had seven catches for 172 yards, a week after six for 153 and a touchdown. Tight end Dalton Schultz caught four passes for 71 yards.

Devin Singletary, who got more reps with Dameon Pierce inactive with an injury, rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries.

Burrow had two costly interceptions in the fourth quarter on back-to-back possessions, one that ended at the Houston 35 and another at the Houston 14. He was 27-of-40 for 347 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Ja’Marr Chase caught five passes for 124 yards and a touchdown. Boyd caught eight for 117.

Christian McCaffrey quips “I suck” after 17-game touchdown streak comes to an end

The 49ers tried to extend Christian McCaffrey’s touchdown streak, but the running back couldn’t get in the end zone on Sunday.

McCaffrey got five chances to score on the 49ers’ final possession of the fourth quarter in Jacksonville as the 49ers worked to get him a touchdown for an NFL-record 18th straight game, but the Jaguars defense held firm. The 49ers still won 34-3, so it was easy for McCaffrey to joke about his failure to get on the scoreboard after the game.

“Yeah, I suck,” McCaffrey said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “Everyone else on the team scored except for me.”

McCaffrey said it meant “a lot to me for them to keep me in at the end of the game there and try to give me that record” and head coach Kyle Shanahan said he explained to Jaguars coach Doug Pederson why they were trying to score at that point in a blowout. He said Pederson was aware of the record and wasn’t offended by the bid.

“Eighteen games in a row is a big record, so if we had a chance to do that, I was going to try to do it for him,” Shanahan said. “And it’s a little nerve-wracking. The last thing I want to do is get him hurt. . . . I wish we could have done it for him, but I think that was a pretty big accomplishment just to do it for 17 games straight.”

Seventeen straight games with a touchdown is impressive, but the 49ers needed a win any way they could get one after three straight losses. They accomplished this mission and McCaffrey will get back at it next week.
