Eagles RB Miles Sanders broke bone in hand; MRI to determine if he can play through injury

With a playoff berth in their sights, the Philadelphia Eagles might have to battle the final two weeks without their top running back.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning that Miles Sanders suffered a broken bone in his hand during Sunday's 34-10 win over the New York Giants, per sources informed of the situation.

The running back will have an MRI and additional tests Monday to determine if there is further damage and whether or not he can play through the injury.

Sanders suffered the injury late in the first half and left the stadium in a soft cast. He finished with seven carries for 45 rushing yards and was quickly ruled out for the second half.

It could be a big loss for the ground-and-pound Eagles, who have become the best running team in the NFL since Sanders returned from missing three games earlier this season.

In Sunday's shellacking of the Giants, the Eagles leaned on Boston Scott (12/41/1) and Jordan Howard (9/37) with Sanders out. That duo, along with rookie Kenneth Gainwell, will have to step up if Sanders can't return for the final two weeks.

The Eagles have clawed their way to the No. 7 seed with two games remaining. Philly faces a cratering Washington squad in Week 17 and rival Dallas in Week 18 when it's possible the Cowboys could have their playoff seeding set.

The Browns have activated several players off the COVID-19 list on Monday, including key players on offense and defense.

Cleveland activated defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, running back Kareem Hunt, left tackle Jedrick Wills, cornerback Troy Hill, defensive tackle Malik McDowell, linebacker Mack Wilson, guard Drew Forbes, and safety Ronnie Harrison.


Hunt and Hill likely would have missed the last two games due to injury regardless. But having players like Clowney and Wills back for the upcoming game against the Steelers.

After their outbreak that moved their Saturday Week 15 contests against the Steelers to last Monday, the Browns still have seven players on their COVID-19 list.

The club had to place linebacker Elijah Lee on the list on Monday. But practice squad safety Nate Meadors was also activated off the COVID-19 list.

The Kansas City Chiefs received good news Monday regarding running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that tests showed there was swelling but no structural damage on CEH's injured collarbone, and the injury isn't season-ending, per a source informed of the situation.

The running back exited Sunday's 36-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers after playing just 25 snaps.

Rapoport added that Edwards-Helaire should return shortly. Whether that comes before the postseason remains to be seen for the AFC West champs.

Until CEH returns, Darrel Williams is in line for the bulk of the reps, and Derrick Gore should see an increase in snaps as well after an impressive 104 scrimmage yards on Sunday.

Monday Night Football: Dolphins rack up eight sacks in 20-3 win over Saints



A substantially depleted New Orleans Saints team proved no match for the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.

Tua Tagovailoa threw for 198 yards with a touchdown and an interception, Jaylen Waddle caught 10 passes for 92 yards and a score, and the Miami defense harassed Saints starting quarterback Ian Book for eight sacks in a 20-3 victory.


Book was getting the start for New Orleans with both Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian on the COVID-19 reserve list. Hill and Siemian are among 22 players on the COVID-19 reserve list for New Orleans and starting left tackle Terron Armstead was also inactive for the contest due to a knee injury.

Emmanuel Ogbah (2.0), Jerome Baker (1.5), Brandon Jones (1.0), Zach Sieler (1.0), Xavien Howard (1.0), Raekwon Davis (0.5), Christian Wilkins (0.5) and Jevon Holland (0.5) all contributed to the sack party on Book. The Dolphins defense didn’t allow a single third down conversion from the Saints as they were 0-for-12 on the night.

Book completed just 12-of-20 passes for 135 yards and was intercepted twice by Miami.

Nik Needham intercepted Book’s second pass of the night and returned it for a 28-yard touchdown to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead.

A 48-yard field goal from Jason Sanders extended the Miami lead to 10-0 late in the first quarter.

The Saints only significant drive of the first half covered 55 yards on eight plays and took advantage of a roughing the passer call against Book by Brandon Jones. Brett Maher converted a 38-yard field goal to get New Orleans on the board late in the half.

Tagovailoa made big connections with Mack Hollins for 40 yards and Waddle for 24 yards as Miami marched 86 yards on nine plays on a decisive third quarter drive. A 1-yard touchdown from Tagovailoa to Waddle made it a 17-3 game as the Dolphins took full command.

Brandon Jones intercepted Book in the fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on a stellar outing for the Dolphins defense.

Caleb Benenoch started at right tackle for New Orleans. He would leave the game in the fourth quarter with Kyle Murphy taking his place to finish the game. The Saints signed Murphy today to add emergency depth to the roster.

Week 17 NFL playoff picture: The AFC says hello to the Dolphins

The Dolphins were 1-7 at one point this season and the discussion around the team had more to do with whether Brian Flores would return for a fourth season as their head coach than anything related to a playoff run.

It’s a very different discussion after Monday night’s 20-3 win over the Saints, however. The Dolphins are now in playoff position with two games to play and winning both of those games would put the team into the postseason for the first time since the 2016 season. Neither of those games are going to be easy as neither the Titans nor the Patriots fit the profile of the teams that the Dolphins have faced during their seven-game winning streak, but stacking that many wins together is never easy in the NFL and counting the Dolphins out twice probably isn’t wise.


This week also brings us new leaders in the AFC East and an AFC North with all four teams still alive despite three of them losing in Week 16. The entire AFC playoff picture is laid out below:

CLINCHED

1. Chiefs (11-4) They haven’t sewn up the No. 1 seed in the conference yet, but it’s hard to bet against the team riding the eight-game winning streak.

IN THE HUNT

2. Titans (10-5) Ending the Dolphins’ winning streak this weekend will make them the AFC South champions.

3. Bengals (9-6) Hosting the Chiefs isn’t the most favorable of matchups for a team trying to close out a division title.

4. Bills (9-6) After an emotional win over the Patriots, they should be on guard against any letdown with the Falcons coming to town.

5. Colts (9-6) Winning shorthanded in Arizona is the latest sign that the Colts are going to be a tough out come the postseason.

6. Patriots (9-6) Facing the Jaguars gives them a chance to get right after back-to-back punches to the gut.

7. Dolphins (8-7) The next two weeks provide the Dolphins a chance to prove their turnaround was more than just a product of the schedule.

8. Chargers (8-7) If they can’t climb back up the ladder, the stench from Sunday’s flop in Houston will linger for a long time.

9. Raiders (8-7) Two straight wins have left the neon lights on in Vegas, but they’ll need to win in Indianapolis to generate real belief that they can get a ticket to the dance.

10. Ravens (8-7) While they should have some players back for this weekend, a visit from the Rams offers no respite when it comes to the opposition.

11. Steelers (7-7-1) This weekend’s game against the Browns could be Ben Roethlisberger‘s last stand.

12. Browns (7-8) Cleveland got the help they needed after losing on Saturday and they’ll need that to continue while they win both games left on their schedule.

13. Broncos (7-8) They remain mathematically alive, but the focus in Denver is on Vic Fangio’s future rather than the postseason.

ELIMINATED

14. Jets (4-11) Beating the Jaguars won’t help their draft standing, but doing it with a depleted roster while missing their head coach made for the rare happy day at MetLife Stadium.

15. Texans (4-11) They played spoiler against the Chargers and can do so against the 49ers this weekend as well.

16. Jaguars (2-13) Back-to-back losses to the Jets and Texans leaves no doubt about where to find the bottom of the barrel in the AFC.
