Report: Patriots finalize deal for Matthew Judon



A report earlier this afternoon indicated the Patriots were making a big push for edge rusher Matthew Judon. Indeed, they did.

Tom Pelissero NFL Media reports the Patriots have finalized the deal with Judon, giving him a four-year, $56 million contact. It includes $32 million over the first two years.

The Patriots also reached deals with tight end Jonnu Smith and defensive tackle Davon Godchaux on Monday. The team entered free agency with the second-most salary-cap space in the league, per overthecap.com.

Judon has led the Ravens in sacks and quarterback pressures since 2017.

Judon, who played out the 2020 season for the Ravens on the franchise tag, made 50 tackles, six sacks and 21 quarterback hits last season in earning his second consecutive Pro Bowl honor.

He has 236 tackles, 34.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in his five seasons with Baltimore.

Jalen Mills agrees to four-year deal with Patriots



The Patriots have been the busiest team in the league on the first day that free agents are allowed to negotiate deals and their activity has now netted them a defensive back.

Jalen Mills has agreed to a four-year deal with New England. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said that the contract is worth $24 million with $9 million in guaranteed money.

Mills played cornerback and safety during his five seasons with the Eagles. He had 74 tackles, 1.5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble in 15 games last season.

Mills joins edge rusher Matthew Judon, defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, and tight end Jonnu Smith as free agents to agree to terms with the team on Monday. They’re also set to get linebacker Dont'a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung back after they opted out last season, so their defense will have a very different look this year.

Report: Texans are signing Tremon Smith



The Texans have agreed to a one-year contract with core special teams player Tremon Smith, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

The deal has a maximum value of $1.13 million, including an $80,000 signing bonus, a $920,000 base salary, $20,000 workout bonus and up to $80,000 in per-game active bonus, per Wilson.

Smith, 24, played 10 games for the Colts last season. He saw action on only seven defensive snaps at cornerback but played 139 special teams snaps.

He returned eight kickoffs for a 22.5-yard average and made two tackles.

The Chiefs made him a sixth-round choice in 2018, and Smith has played 32 career games with one start.

 

Jaguars, Roy Robertson-Harris agree to three-year deal



The Jaguars have made a defensive splash in early free agency.

According to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, Jacksonville has agreed to terms with former Bears defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris on a three-year contract. Garafolo reports the deal is worth $24.4 million with $14 million guaranteed.

Robertson-Harris signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of UTEP in 2016, sticking with the club for his first five seasons. Robertson-Harris has appeared in 52 games with 13 starts since making his debut in 2017.

Robertson-Harris started six games for the Bears in 2020, overall appearing in eight before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in November. He had 10 total tackles, five QB hits, and one tackle for loss. Overall, Robertson-Harris has 7.5 sacks and 30 quarterback hits in 52 contests.

Joe Thuney agrees to five-year deal with Chiefs



Monday morning brought word that the Jets and Patriots were trying to land a deal with guard Joe Thuney, but he’ll be moving on from the AFC East.

Thuney’s agent Mike McCartney announced that his client has agreed to a five-year deal with the Chiefs. Multiple reports peg the value of the deal at $80 million.

The $15 million average annual salary is the most for any guard on a multi-year deal. Brandon Scherff is set to make over $18 million on a franchise tag with Washington.

The move comes after the Chiefs released tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz. They also have Austin Reiter, Mike Remmers, Kelechi Osemele, and Daniel Kilgore headed for free agency, so Thuney will be the centerpiece of a new-look offensive line in Kansas City next season.

Jarrad Davis agrees to one-year, $7 million deal with Jets



Quick deal? Check. One-year? Check. Range of $7 million? Check.

Former Lions linebacker Jarrad Davis, a first-round pick in 2017, reportedly will sign a one-year deal with the Jets, according to NFL Media. The deal will have a value of $7 million.

That meshes with the expectations for Davis. Though not a big deal, it was a quick deal. In the range of $7 million. It gives Davis a chance to show what he can do in a system that presumably will make better use of his skills.

New Jets coach Robert Saleh, a Michigan native, didn’t get the Lions head-coaching job. He’ll now lure the former Lions player to New York.

Here’s an intriguing connection. Adam Gase used to coach the Jets. In 2017, he coached the Dolphins. The Dolphins wanted to drafted Davis in 2017, but the Lions beat them to the punch.

Chargers are expected to sign Corey Linsley



The Chargers are set to add some protection for quarterback Justin Herbert in free agency.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the team is expected to sign center Corey Linsley after the new league year opens on Wednesday. The contract is expected to make Linsley the highest-paid center in the NFL.


Linsley was named a first-team All-Pro after starting 13 games for the Packers last season. The 2014 fifth-round pick started 99 games over his seven seasons in Green Bay and will be rejoining former Packers teammate Bryan Bulaga on the Chargers offensive line.

Dan Feeney started at center with Mike Pouncey on injured reserve last season. Pouncey has retired and Feeney is a free agent along with guards Forrest Lamp and Ryan Groy.

Samson Ebukam agrees to two-year deal with 49ers



After spending his first four seasons with the Rams, Samson Ebukam will remain in California on his second contract — but he’s heading up to the Bay Area.

Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media report Ebukam will sign with the 49ers on a two-year deal worth $12 million. Ebukam could earn up to $13.5 million with incentives.

Ebukam was a Rams fourth-round pick in 2017. Starting 14 games in 2020, Ebukam had 4.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup.

Overall, Ebukam appeared in 64 games for L.A., starting 35 over the four-year period. He recorded 14.0 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 28 quarterback hits, and six forced fumbles.

The Raiders have been trying to upgrade their pass rush since trading Khalil Mack away, and they have identified their top priority in free agency this season.

Yannick Ngakoue and the Raiders are close to an agreement on a free agent contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

In Las Vegas, Ngakoue will reunite with defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, who was the Jaguars’ head coach when Ngakoue was having the best seasons of his career in Jacksonville.

Last year Ngakoue was traded twice, first from the Jaguars to the Vikings and then from the Vikings to the Ravens less than two months later. Now he’ll hope he has a place where he can stay with the Raiders.

As someone who has seen their salary cap situation firsthand, I would love to know how the Rams can afford to give Floyd a deal averaging 16 million a year. More to come from that team I’m sure

 

Unless I missed something, the article didn't say anything about Winston coming back. It did infer that they would most likely keep him on because no one else wants him. Grab someone more exciting ? The Saints just don't have the cap room to go out there shopping with an open checkbook. The shocking part is that Loomis was able to once again try to hold things together as best he can and still find more cap space. The guys a f***ing genius.

 

Jaguars agree to terms with Carlos Hyde



Carlos Hyde and Urban Meyer are reuniting.

Hyde, a free agent running back, has agreed to sign a two-year, $6 million contract with the Jaguars, according to multiple reports.

The deal brings Hyde and Meyer back together after Meyer previously coached Hyde at Ohio State. Hyde was a first-team All-Big Ten running back for Meyer, so it’s easy to see why Meyer thinks highly of him.

Less clear, however, is why the Jaguars want to pay any running back when running backs are largely interchangeable, and the Jaguars have a very cheap starting running back in James Robinson, who was effective as an undrafted rookie last year and is under contract with a salary cap hit of just $781,666 this year.

Hyde was a second-round pick of the 49ers in 2014 and has also spent time with the Browns, Chiefs, Texans and Seahawks, in addition to a previous stint with the Jaguars. Last year he had 81 carries for 356 yards and 16 catches for 93 yards for the Seahawks.

The Rams signed linebacker Leonard Floyd to a one-year deal last year and they’re signing him to a longer deal this year.

Shortly after Josina Anderson reported that the Rams had wrapped up a new deal with Floyd, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that it is a four-year, $64 million contract.

Floyd set a career-high with 10.5 sacks while starting every game that the Rams played last season. He added two more sacks in the postseason and should remain a strong pass rushing threat in a front seven with Aaron Donald playing inside of him.

The Rams’ top-ranked defense did lose a key part on Monday when safety John Johnson agreed to a deal with the Browns, but Floyd’s return is a step toward remaining one of the league’s top units in 2021.

Report: Joe Thomas signing one-year deal with Texans



The Texans have had a busy offseason.

They have traded for offensive lineman Marcus Cannon and linebacker Shaq Lawson in separate deals. They have agreed to terms with Tremon Smith, Andre Roberts and Kamu Grugier-Hill.

Add linebacker Joe Thomas‘ name to the list, too.

Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports the Texans have agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal with Thomas.

Thomas, 29, played 409 defensive snaps and 170 on special teams last season. He played 15 games with four starts and made 48 tackles and two pass breakups.

Thomas played four seasons in Green Bay and three in Dallas and was an important contributor on special teams and as a backup linebacker.

He has played 82 games with 14 starts.
