“After 20 years as a player in the NFL and 15 years as a Saint, it is time to retire from the game of football. Each day, I poured my heart & soul into being your Quarterback. Til the very end, I exhausted myself to give everything I had to the Saints organization, my team, and the great city of New Orleans. We shared some amazing moments together, many of which are emblazoned in our hearts and minds and will forever be a part of us. You have molded me, strengthened me, inspired me, and given me a lifetime of memories. My goal for the last 15 years was striving to give you everything you had given to me and more.

“I am only retiring from playing football. I am not retiring from New Orleans. This is not goodbye, rather a new beginning. Now my real life’s work begins!”

The retirement comes 15 years to the day after Brees signed a six-year, $60 million deal with the Saints. He began his playing career as a second-round pick of the Chargers, 20 years ago.

It has been reported that Brees will join NBC. He previously has said that he plans to try his hand at several different things in his post-playing career.

Like most great quarterbacks, he’ll likely be highly successful at whatever he chooses to do.

So is Taysom Hill the starter?

I’m pretty sure I can answer this one.

They hope so. But financially they’ve planned it for it to fail. Which is good, because it will.

By the way, he’ll be 31 already by week 1 this season

It's looking that way. I think Jamis Winston is a free agent this year. And the Saints don't have the cap room to go out shopping. Unless they can pull a guy off the NFL "scrap heap" like they did with Brees or Bridgewater for cheap. Can lightening strike a third time ??

The age doesn't bother me. The guy can throw a football. And he can run. Are the Saints a super Bowl team next year? I don't think so.

The Saints may be able to get a QB on the cheap that wants an opportunity if possible. I don't know if anyone is really available though.

With all the cuts they have to make to get compliant they probably weren’t contenders even with Brees. You got me there.

I just know there are people who believe that Taysom is the next 5-10 years for a perennial contender. And I think they’re nuts.

Jameis is, if you believe he’s capable.

    No.

I know he had his eye surgery. But that doesn't mean he can hit the target. 31 picks with the Bucs two seasons ago? And when Brees got hurt this last year? They didn't use him. They went with Hill. That tells me something.

If they have any assets, which I no nothing of, they may better try to move up in the draft and fetch a QB?

    Ravens sign Kevin Zeitler

The Ravens have made a big addition to their offensive line.

Free agent guard Kevin Zeitler has agreed to a three-year, $22.5 million contract with the Ravens, according to multiple reports.

Zeitler can sign now, rather than waiting until the start of the league year on Wednesday, because the Giants cut him last week.

The 31-year-old Zeitler started all 16 games last year, and the Ravens hope he can step in as an immediate upgrade for a line that needs to give Lamar Jackson time to pass and room to run.

Jonnu Smith agrees to terms with Patriots

The Patriots have landed an agreement with one of the top free agent tight ends on the market.

Jonnu Smith has agreed to a four-year deal with New England. Smith’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said that the deal is worth $50 million and includes $31.25 million in guaranteed money.

Smith was a Titans third-round pick in 2017 and appeared in 60 games for them over the last four years. He had 41 catches for 448 yards and eight touchdowns during the 2020 season and has 114 catches for 1,302 yards and 16 touchdowns over the course of his career.

The Patriots got very little production from their tight ends in 2020. Smith’s arrival should make for a positive change on that front during the 2021 season.

    Texans to sign Andre Roberts

Veteran receiver and return man Andre Roberts is heading to Houston.

The Texans will sign Roberts, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Roberts spent the last two years in Buffalo and has also had stints with the Cardinals, Washington, Lions, Falcons and Jets. His best season as a return man came in 2018, when he led the NFL in both punt return average and kickoff return yards. As a receiver he hasn’t been used much in recent years, but he’s been a starting wide receiver in the past.

The 33-year-old Roberts has been a productive enough return man that he has more than 10,000 all-purpose yards in his career.

Cam Erving set to join Panthers on two-year deal

The Panthers have wasted little time adding pieces to their offensive line.

According to multiple reports, the Panthers are set to add Erving to the roster on a two-year deal worth $10 million. The deal includes $8 million in guaranteed money.

The Panthers have also agreed to a deal with guard Pat Elflein since the negotiating window opened at noon on Monday.

Erving heads to Carolina after spending last season with the Cowboys. He started five games in between stints on injured reserve.

Erving has experience at guard and tackle and the Panthers have openings at both spots. Left tackle Russell Okung, left guard Chris Reed, and right guard John Miller are all impending free agents.

All the money reported already and not surprisingly you won’t find the Colts listed anywhere. Even when every outlet takes the angle we’re in good position financially and should be throwing money around.

But I’m not concerned. I wouldn’t be surprised if we land one big fish (Golladay?) and have one other quality signing before all is said and done. It’s been Chris Ballard’s M.O. since he got here
