I don’t feel they’re that similar as players, honestly. Dart is a bit more gunslinger, and despite being quite fast/athletic, I think Fields was a much more dynamic runner.
Don't view Dart as a top 32 but prob have Higher upside then Sanders to me. Sanders I have late 1st grade on but don't think he'll ever be someone everyone views as a top 5 QB but think He can be in the Dak Kirk Cousins range but his Arm won't ever make him seem elite but has the highest FLoor to me of the rookie QBs.
[QUOTE Who am I forgetting? I'd be real interested in reading what you think about Dart and Sanders. Do you view Jaxson Dart as a top 32 player? Do you view Shedeur Sanders as a top 32 player?[/QUOTE] Are you talking NFL general board, or a team specific board. If a particular team, which one? As far as general board, I think you know the answer, Sanders, yes, Dart probably. As for my team not drafting a QB, so no. As for the Jets I think they'd draft Sanders at 7 if he was there, but he won't so its moot. I think they'd prefer Milroe over Dart. Probably extends to the Saints as well, but less sure of that.
We are going to have to agree to disagree on this one. They are both short to intermediate accurate passers. They both have an ability to use their legs, but don’t depend on that part of their game. Now we go in separate directions, the running game is dynamic in both QBs, I see more similarities here than in the passing game. They both read the pressure similarly and can escape for positive gains. What I don’t see in Dart is consistent footwork, which leads to lazy reads and that leads to leaving the pocket before he should. This is what worries me the most graduating to the NFL. Behind an average line, I think he is going to take a lot of unnecessary sacks. When he has a clean pocket and 3 seconds to read, I think he will have positive gains up to the intermediate levels. If he tries to out throw coverage, he’s going to be in trouble and toss a lot of INTs. This is a long way of saying, if the Jets draft him, I don’t think they ever get off of Fields. Fields is a superior QB, similar runner, but I definitely see better footwork and decision making.
If he becomes a Kirk Cousins, I would deem that a win. Before injuries derailed him, Cousins was always top ten, never top three, but the top three changes every year. All the top ten changes year to year, but Cousins was always in it. Very consistent.
Dart bailed USC to go to Ole Miss so there's that. Hurts left Alabama because of Tagovailoa he wanted to be the starter. For me Hurts is thick in the legs, power runner. Jalen Hurts just won a Super Bowl, so is Dart getting picked earlier than later not logical? Me I think Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and all the other studs Philly drafted from Georgia won that game. And Philly was smart, patient and took Mitchell and DeJean, then turned Zack Baun into an all pro at ILB. Philly's coaching staff is really underrated and has anybody drafted better in the last 5 years. Jason Kelce retires, boom, they got their Center already on the roster.
I cannot argue this, positional value vs. talent rating always comes into play. No team is winning in the playoffs without a good QB, even if he is a game manager who hands it off to the RB and makes good decisions with the ball. Left Tackle and Edge rusher are also premium players and it pushes CB value back. Looking at 2024 round 1 8 OT, 7 WR, 6 QB, 5 EDGE. 2025 has a different talent pool but you cannot discount the value of the position or how teams build their board. I really do not like Aaron Rodgers the person, and the way he is dicking around waiting for MN to sign him, but without him Steelers really have to take Dart if he is there at 21, assuming he gets by N.O.
WITH him, they need to draft him if they like him because he’s going to need a couple of years before he is ready for the NFL. That would actually be about as perfect a situation he could fall into.
The underlined part is one of the biggest issues Dart needs to iron out. He trusts his arm a bit too much at times. See, the last part, Fields has already had 3 years of NFL coaching (4?). Dart zero. So unless you meant as a prospect, I’m giving no advantages to Fields today. Dart could still learn a ton. Also, as far as “needing time”, this is why I thought the Rams fit was fun. Lots of pre-snap motion, offensive creativity, open receivers short to intermediate. Some deep shots but enough misdirection to keep defenses honest and buy him this time. He’s by no means a guarantee to work out. I’m just in on the upside after 20 if you trust your coaching staff.
If the Colts didn't have AR, and had a veteran to hold the fort for a year, would you take Dart at #14?
No, I purely meant before the NFL, going back to Fields college tape. Now is an afterthought based on the fact he does have Pro experience. I just don’t think Dart ever gets to Fields level. Rams would be a good fit for him to sit. At least in LA, he will probably have a path based on the QB in front of him being almost done. If he can learn from them, he has a chance. I’m just not sure he has the read ability to do the things Stafford does. That’s why pre-draft is so much fun. There is so much potential! Never know who is going to rise to the occasion.
RT, and Campbell. Then opening conversation with nybites about Pittsburgh, (if he views Dart as a franchise QB) Because taking a QB to take a QB is how you end up with Pickett.
If AR can be worth 4, sure, Dart at 14 is FAARR from the craziest shit I’ve seen in the draft. I would appreciate Dart at 14 WAAYY more than 5’10” WR Phillip Dorsett at 23 coming off a season in which the Pats had run straight through us for 250yards/game not once but twice, including hanging a 40-burger to eliminate us from the playoffs. QB is the most important position in the game. So if you don’t have one, better keep trying. If you trust your coaching staff to train them up. But watching AR’s “progress”, I’m not sure I do
I mean the plan would certainly be to slide back to 16-19 and gain some draft capital first. But sure. That “hold the fort for a year” caveat is something sooooo many busts just don’t get.
Derrick Harmon would be my pick, Will Johnson if he fell. But I am not all in on Dart, he may be better than Pickett, but not by leaps and bounds. Pickett is already on his 3rd team in 4 years. I don't think the 2025 class is as bad as the 2022 class, but I like the 2026 CLASS better. My vote is take Harmon, build your lines, roll with Rudolph and ?? If they go 6-11 they will have capital and be in better position to move up for the guy I want Drew Allar in 2026. Not saying Suck for Luck, players play to win, but a brutal division to win games in. Dart is streaky and if you break down stats vs. the best teams in the SEC, you will have a conversation. However he did not play Georgia or Alabama in 2024. His 3 losses were @ Florida, @ LSU, home vs. Kentucky. He did beat South Carolina, by using his legs. SC is going to put 5-6 guys in the NFL this draft, very talented Defense.
Other than Ward at 1, the only other lock I got is Tyler Warren at 14. Quick question though, if Warren if gone, do the Colts take Loveland?
No idea honestly. Probably not what you wanted to hear. But I think our options are wider than people think. I fully understand the “Have to salvage AR, better go offense” sentiment. But to this point, does Ballard really strike anyone as a ‘they think I should so I will’ kind of guy?
I do not view either as one of the 32 best players in the class, no. Factoring in positional value, however, they’re probably both borderline 1st round picks to me. If I were a GM with a mid-first and needed someone I could plug in and start this year and know their experience and accuracy could result in a functional NFL offense with good coaching, I might pull the trigger (eg year 1 Mac Jones or Bo Nix last year) hoping they could develop into more than that. If I had a late 1st and a strong roster and an older QB and wanted to take a dart throw (no pun intended) on possibly developing a successor, I might do it. If I had a bad team at the top of the draft and took them expecting a transformational franchise QB, I’d make sure I had my resume up to date.
