how? if you have the conf champ, how could a 3rd or 4th seed in the SEC, ACC or Big 10 play for the title? The Conf Champ gets invited, not the 3rd place team? I don't understand?

the issue is there are some lower and lame conferences, so their champion wouldn't hold the same merit for record as the SEC Champion. this is where the problem is. If I'm the Conference USA Champ, why should I be excluded from the playoffs 1-8 because I'm not the SEC Champ? They have a point. Not their fault what conference they're in. They won their conf title. they should be invited. If you invite ALL Conf Champs then major at-large power 5 teams could get excluded and bumped off. That would piss people off.

Oh and ND? Kick out Rutgers and Maryland out of the Big 10 and put ND in it. Then you have a solid 12 team conference and the big 12 conf winner goes to the playoff. Sorry ND but it's time to join a conference in full.

The at-large teams is where my idea takes a serious hit. Unless you expand the playoffs, they're out. It's all Conf Champions.

if u gave them a stipend or pay them then they are getting paid to play on top of their scholarships. i don't wanna hear peep out of them then !

Read what I said cat. 16 teams, every conference champ would be there and then fill out the other six spots with the highest rated schools that didn't win their conference.

im sorry Gid, the post got sandwiched in between 2 of Lyman's post and i missed it. i like the idea. all who was not invited still goes to the lesser bowls they have now. get rid of the bye week teams have to crunch the schedule shorter as well.

    One last time, Cat.

Notre Dame was invited to join the Big 10 conference TWICE and turned down the invitation both times.

I had a scenario go through my mind when I wrote that but, damned if I can remember it now. :dum:

one last time Lyman- that was THEN, this is NOW and a new 8 or 16 team playoff could change their minds! Stop living in the past and past actions. The NCAA could very easily force their hands and tell them they must join a conference full time or they won't be invited to the playoff. That stance and threat wasn't there before when ND said no to the old Big 10. If I'm the NCAA, I force them out of the ACC, put Maryland and Rutgers in it and put ND in the Big 10 once and for all. Done!

One: the NCAA has no authority to say in what conference a team plays.

Two: how many times does a girl have to say no before you stop asking her for a date. ND had two opportunities to join the Big 10. They will not get a third.

Three: that stance and threat isn't there today.

two: says you. unless you are in the Big 10 meetings, you and I don't have a clue what would happen or offers made in the future.

three-with how much sports are changing and how they change the rules, this could be coming sooner than later. they already want 8 teams playoff, so 16 isn't far behind.

Notre Dame is essentially part of the ACC. They joined in all other sports that they sponsor. Notre Dame has a scheduling partnership with them in football. ND will most years have a much stronger than average Power 5 schedule. They don't need a, what at this point is, an arbitrary conference championship game.

If ND decided they wanted to join a conference, the power conferences would all be at their doorstep begging for it to be them, including the Big 10.

It came back to me . . .

    Setting the stage:
    • You have a conference with two divisions. For this scenario, we'll call them East and West.
    • In the East division, the the division winner has 2 losses and is ranked around #7.
    • In the West division, you have 2 teams both with only 1 loss. For this scenario, we'll call them Team A and Team B.
    • Team A has a win over Team B by 2 points due to a missed FG by Team B as time expired.
    • Team A then goes to the conference championship game by virtue of the H2H meeting.
    • Team B ends the regular season ranked #5.
In the conference championship game, Team A loses to the East Division team giving them now 2 losses and drops below Team B in the final rankings. Team B moves up to #4 and makes the playoffs as a 3rd place finisher in the conference.

Only the conference winner gets an automatic. Even if they have 3 or 4 losses. Bur the 6 at large teams go strictly by the coaches poll.

I was referring to Cat's 8 team format. Not to your larger one.

but if they go to a 8 or 16 team playoff they will. they are not a part of the ACC Championship. They will need to be a Conference Champ to get into the playoffs unless they are a major at-large bid.

Notre Dame with only 1 loss would always make it. 2-losses and their sched could be good enough to get in.

As for this year they are extremely underrated. They may very well be a top 8 team in my eyes after this week. I have them at 9.
