Congratulations to Jerry York for making the Hockey HoF. That’s very rare for an NCAA coach. But 5 National Championships (1 at Bowling Green and 4 at BC) will get you recognition. He’s made you proud, Matty.
How 'bout them Cornell Big Red! Ranked #2 in the U.S.A., and climbing. Saw Mattias Samuelsson pot the puck last night for Western Michigan at Denver. He's not quite as big as Nich Zadorov, but close enough to compare. He's also a better skater, and appears to be several levels ahead in hockey IQ. I'd love to see him develop some more next year as a Jr. at WMU before jumping to the Sabres. When he is ready for the blue & gold he'll be a fierce compliment to what could be of of the NHL's elite D corps.
I was 4 years old at Lake Placid in ‘84 for the championship game. Gino Cavallini for the win. I think that notebook is from the Beanpot game that Dan and I went to. Thanks for posting these skinny.
This decade is off to a fine start: 1) I moved to Portugal, and 2) The Cornell Big Red are ranked #1 in the entire U.S. of A. USA, U.S.A.! Go Big Red!!
Minnesota Duluth defenseman Scott Perunovich takes home the Hobey. A 2nd round pick of the Blues, this kid doesn’t have much more to prove and will most likely make the jump to the pro game. ^ complete conjecture on my part and nothing else.
Jack Rathbone D- Harvard, just signed his ELC with Vancouver. Jack Dugan W- Providence, just signed his ELC with Vegas. Wyatt Kalynuk D- Wisconsin, just signed his ELC with Chicago. the timing of these signings makes me extremely nervous for the outlook for NCAA hockey next season. So much at stake here, if they shut it down what are the elite NHL prospects supposed to do? If they play in the CHL or in Europe they'll lose NCAA eligibility immediately. At the same time, they can't be expected to not play an entire season during these crucial developmental years.
Good point/question. They have to rethink the rules in this situation, in my opinion... these are uncertain and extraordinary times and circumstances. The prospects must be able to continue playing somehow/somewhere IF the NCAA pulls the plug on 2021. NCAA already allows for an extra year if the Pandemic has effected their scheduled 4 years of competition, but cancelling next year would really screw things up... it would make sense to even give them another year if necessary, but as you statted, they cant just sit, so they must have an opportunity to get a waiver to play in the CHL at least.
I feel like a 'captain obvious' when commenting on your statement, but i sure just dont know what the hell they are going to do.
Time to pay attention to college hockey. First: I am crowning the Cornell Big Red 2020 NCAA Champions. Nuff said on that well deserved recognition. Second: the Univ. of Alabama Huntsville has saved D-1 hockey in the Deep South. (For at least one season.) The previously announced decision to drop the sport was rolled back after a GoFundMe style campaign, lead by alum Cam Talbot, got enough scratch to keep the Chargers skating. Third: two colleges have announced plans to add D-1 hockey, bringing the total to 62 programs. Penn State - already a national power - and Arizona State - who will probably become a power - are already skating with the big boys. Coming soon: Long Island Univ. (Brooklyn based), and St. Thomas Univ., St. Paul, MN. The St. Thomas Univ. Tommies have a tremendous academic reputation. I think they’ll be successful. I am glad that metro NYC now has high quality hockey without having to take the rails to CT or Jersey. (Oh, Princeton is for the pretty boys.) Congratulations to the Cornell Big Red!
university of Illinois also joining D1, again. similar to Dan Im happy with the growth. players at Huntsville kind of left in the wind there. happy theyre coming back but i think theyre just delaying the inevitable. they have to pay up big time to get other teams to come down to play them and even with the financial benefits most of the big boys say no. Liam Izyk made out like a bandit. im still very concerned about the likelihood of '20/21 NCAA hockey. i dont see how they can pull it off. college kids traveling to opposing schools? spreading STDs is one thing, Covid is a whole other animal.
* i think the Illini joiing D1 may be premature. my bad. thought it was definite but hasnt been announced quite yet
Yeah, Illini still not committed. I think it's bizarre that there's no D-1 hockey in a state like Illinois, but AL and AZ both have a program. NY has a bunch just like MA, and MN will be at 6 with the Tommies. Indiana likes sports where men run around in their underwear, but Illinois?! I gotta figure U. IL will make the upgrade, maybe even Northwestern. Otherwise, I think where we'll see a few new teams is out west. Colorado, Utah, Washington, Stanford, Cal, and UCLA (or USC) could all be candidates.
