Denver is one of the least inspiring culinary towns I know of. Here, Mexican is haute cuisine. Nothing against Mexican food, but come on! They serve nice steaks here, but what town doesn't?

Buffalo is a little gem of a foodie town, (with emphasis on little gem). Obviously everyone knows about the wings, but the beef on 'weck is the best roast beef sandwich on the planet. If you tour the small little towns all around the Buffalo area you're likely to find places that are unique and that serve great food. The area gets good grades for their emphasis on: 1) quality, 2) quantity, and 3) tastiness.

Rochester has their garbage plate - they're proud of it. But they shouldn't be. Rochester also has a hard on because many there insist that Roch. was the first place to serve hot wings. (They're delusional about that.)

Ironically I may have learned about beef on weck from watching DDD's. If I recall and w/out looking, is there some kind of cheese on that.

Baltimore makes a really good pit beef sandwich which I will get when I go see the Orioles some time this month.

I went to mardis gras, I could tell you first hand that the food is overrated and overpriced.

Toronto and NY are two food places where you could go nuts.

I heard Buffalo has good pizza.

in a major city, i don't want the overpriced food tourist traps. give me a hidden gem of a place anytime.

  8. skinny123 Guest

The hidden gem like popeyes louisianna chicken.

That was meant as a joke, I had the jumbalyo and gumbo, basically the same stew my moms been making my whole life, add the fish.

Not really. The best Italian places I've ever been to were in Italy.

I was a little shocked to find that it was easier to find better italian food in toronto than in Italy. The best talent from there goes to Toronto, NY, LA, Vegas etc. You have to know the good spots when you go there, or it could be a dive with a terrible attitude.

I did a google search in the Denver area and there are tonnes of places.

I guess it depends on how loosely you define "decent". Most in Denver (that I've found) are glorified Olive Gardens.

My wife has a gluten allergy so we have to be careful about Italian. Although that was not a problem for us in Italy.

If you're a foodie and find yourself in NYC, head over the 59th St. Bridge to Astoria, Queens. There's just about every imaginable cuisine to be found, and prepared by native chefs. Some of the best Italian (and Greek) I've ever had was in Astoria.

I was on 60th street in manhattan, I put a twenty dollar bill in the slot to buy a ticket for the cable car going to roosevelt island. Lo and behold I get screwed, lose my money and get no token. I asked a cop what to do, he said to go on the city website when I get home and file a complaint and they'll send me the money back.

    No, I didn't do it.

I've heard that queens is a foodies paradise.

Queens is more cosmopolitan than any place on earth. You name a country and it's represented by a community there. This makes for a lot of restaurants that are my style: authentic and unpretentious.

Believe it or not, but some of the Irish places serve actual food. And, Ireland is a foodie nation. Therefore, there are great Irish restaurants in Queens.

The neighborhoods are still largely dominated by traditional immigrant groups: Maspeth: Germans, Astoria: Italians & Greeks, Jackson Heights: Indians, Sunnyside: Irish, etc. But every neighborhood has a great variety; but Astoria is a real standout.

My favourite is chicken souvlaki on a bun, I just had one today for lunch.

The kemmelweck, (spelling?, we always say weck), bun is an important ingredient in this delightful concoction. It has salt baked on top, and I know it's notoriously hard to bake them right.

Fresh horseradish is essential. Of course the dead angus makes a significant contribution. Au jus, too!

But I've never heard of cheese on a beef on weck. (Now, if you're throwing together a garbage plate, anything - including cheese - goes.)

give me your info and i'll get the $20 back! haha

that sucks though skinny. $20 is a lot to lose on nothing.
