both my grandparents came from Ireland to NFLD and then came down to NY and Philly. One of the areas they came from is Sligo and the other is Galway. I don't know anything else.

Cat, I believe some discussions deserve to just lull to silence. I have no interest in discussing someone who is no longer active here.

I appreciate and admire you're effort to mediate when there was a problem. But that was then, and this is now.

Please, can we just let this go?

Neither are near Kilkenny (my condolences, Cat). But there's great news for you too! Both County Sligo and County Galway sandwich County Mayo. My wife is from Mayo, so sure I might be a wee bit biased, but Mayo is the most spectacular of 32 spectacular counties. So Sligo & Galway have this going for them: they're near to perfection.

Interesting that there actually is an irish language all on it's own, totally unrelated to english. I've always associated irish people to the english language. for obvious reasons.

my sister in law's Mom, who has lived in a section of Philly for some 45 yrs, still has an Irish accent. When my brother married his wife, a ton of her family came over from Ireland for the wedding. At the reception, i was meeting some of these nice people and i swear i needed a translator. And when they spoke to each other, it was like a different language. No clue what they were saying.

The reason NFLD became a part of Canada is because the orange order found out that catholic bishops were pushing to keep things as is. There were also groups that wanted to join with the US, but Britain wouldn't hear of it.

  11. skinny123 Guest

I think they started speaking english only because they were so close to england.

NFLD was in debt, they asked britain for money and they said no. They held a referendum in 1948 with three choices, 1) Stay as is, with self-government 2) Become a dominion of Great Britain 3) Join with Canada. There was a group that wanted to include 4) Join with the US and Truman, Britain refused to give up NFLD to the US.
The catholics wanted self-government, and the orange order found out, they outnumbered the catholics 2 to 1, they purposely voted to join Canada, and the rest is history.

Cork is where my great grandparents are from, the ones that we know for sure anyway.
My mother's grandfather got on a boat at 8 years old w/ his brother and they made the trip across by themselves. Im sure they were w/ neighbors and friends but no other family members. He wound up becoming a mason in Boston and had a son that graduated from Georgetown medical school at 21 years old, that includes taking a year off to save money to pay for his books. That was my grandfather Robert York. He became the chief of staff and wound up taking care of most of the Catholic priests in and around the city. While he would make his rounds the priests would teach my mother and her brothers everything from Latin to the correct form for delivering a hip check. 2 of my uncles went on to receive hockey scholarships to BC and one of them is now the coach there. learned the game from those (French Canadian) priests and its been in the family blood ever since.

The reason Ireland is an English speaking nation is a very complex story. But remember that English is a language that dates only to around 1300 give or take a century for extreme variations in dialect, etc.

So even the Brits didn't speak English at one point.

But, the most significant reason is that the fucking Brits literally forced it upon the Irish. In a nutshell their approach to colonization was to make their conquered subjects "like" Britains. (Not actually Britains mind you, just subjects that would go along with decrees.)

Well, language is a great divider so that sought to smash that barrier. Over the years their policies became increasingly suppressive and by the time of the Great Hunger* (1840's) anyone heard speaking in Irish was severely punished.

Religion is also a great divider, but of course Britain was Catholic up until Henry VIII. However that soon became a brutal weapon against the Irish. They could not succeed in having the Irish convert voluntarily to apostasy. They literally tried the approach of replacing Catholic by offering Brits land in Ireland. (That's why the North of Ireland is about 2/3 Prot. - it's much closer than the southern part, and most takers were Scottish.) This failed to get most of Ireland to turn their back on the Church, so laws became increasingly difficult to own property**. (Religious rights - as well as the right to educate the young - were predicted on property ownership.)

The Brits really were first-class bastards.

Known by most as the Irish Potato Famine * which demolished about 2/3 of the entire population - either to starvation or to emigration. Much lesser known is the fact that Ireland was a major exporter of food products in the 1840's. Also Ireland's soil is generally poor and rocky. ** Britains repressive land owner laws reduced most Irish families to a small plot of dirt. The marvelous spud would thrive anywhere, and it was highly nutritious. A good, really the only viable, crop option. Well, too much of a good thing invites problems, and when a blight hit the spud (causing them to rot in the ground) there was literally no fallback food supply for Catholics.

So the animus that the Irish have for the fucking Brits is deep seated, and sears to this day. Of course the Irish are better off relative to the Brits today, so fuck 'em!

BTW, Irish is one of three languages in the Gaelic language group. One of those is called Gaelic but that is spoken in Scotland. The third is hardly alive and is from Wales. The group is most closely connected to Finnish (and Basque) and are the most unEuropean of languages. They trace down to Sanskrit.

Matty! A Corker! And I thought I was getting to know you. Now I'm starting to like you!

Seriously, your story is remarkable as it is for millions on Irish/Amer.-Can.-Australians. Dr. York's brains must of attracted the ladies and brought you those looks and charms that enabled you to woo your lovely bride.

Man I'll tell you though, even my wife has a hard time with the Cork accent. I had a friend in NY from Cork and she once gave me the location of a store as "tirty tird and tird". Huh? Written down that's 33rd and Third.

(Edit: County Limerick is just to the north.) [del]Just north[/del] to the northeast of County Cork is Tipperary which is strong in hurling, but is Kilkenny's bitch. County Kilkenny is just to the east of Tip.

Bummer, they run them bulls in Pamplona in July. Poor planning.

We had such a great time in the various stops we made that we only hit the beach one day. I was surprised that not one nip was exposed to me.

Roughly, our itinerary was Madrid, Seville, C?rdoba, and then Malaga. Other than the Capital that's the Andalusian region, or southern Spain. The Moorish influence is still pronounced so that makes it unique. But I still was not quite compared for its beauty.

Malaga is a beach resort area, and that's what I expect - an older version of Florida. But is one of the most interesting and beautiful cities I've seen.

I am very satisfied with this "scouting" trip. When I move to Portugal it's great to know the pleasures to be found just across the border. So, when you come visit me in Portugal (I won't be in Fatima, but it'll be near there) you better plan on two or more weeks so you can work Spain into the holiday, err vacation.

At one time the British Empire was vast, they had their paws everywhere you could think of, literally.

    US - Pre- 1776
    Canada
    The carribean
    Falkland islands
    Ireland
    Hong kong
    India
South Africa, plus many other African nations.
    Israel and Palestine
    Australia
    New Zealand

Maybe I left something out, yeah, one managed to marry into my family, brother-in-law grrr. The british invasion music is the only thing good to come out of that island. Funny how they now complain of being invaded by people from countries they previously conquered or occupied. Karmas a bitch!
