In bad times, the trickle down effect should be concerning, especially in PA where there's a budget shortfall. Job security goes down, and companies start to panic and start their layoffs. My cousin in California was an architect and they got hit hard and he had to move to Nevada to find work. One state could be worse than another. I'm not blaming it on Trump, this is cyclical, but don't lie to the voters and promise 4%, I have no comment.

It's real simple. We're not in a recession. There's nothing magical about the definitions of a recession, a market correction, or a bear market. But they do frame these matters so we can have sensible conversation.

In the grand scheme of things, this is a big "so what". Give me a fucking break! He's been in office for just over 100 days. Anyone who compares his performance to his campaign rhetoric at this point is a lunatic.

Nobody said that there's a recession, but a lot of experts are calling for one, and going from 3.2% in Q3 to 2.1 in Q4 to .07% in Q1 is exactly what you yourself have defined as a recession. Yes, he will be held accountable just like EVERY other politician that hasn't come through with his campaign rhteoric, the snowflake will not be excused by the FAKE media. lol

Let me make this clear; you are wrong. I have not defined a recession, but I follow economics closely and know what it is. It is two consecutive quarters of negative GDP. Declining GDP is not negative GDP.

There are also a lot of "experts" that do not expect a recession. Which if were to happen would be after Sept. at the earliest. I learned a long time ago to take "experts" with a grain of salt. Opinions are like assholes: everyone has one, and they usually stink.

skinny - i am amazed on how much you know about the US and even a individual state like Pa when you live in Canada. Nice work!

Yes, negative GDP is definitely a recession, I was just pointing out that .05% is red lining it, let's hope for the best.

To repeat myself: So what! We use two quarters so we do not overreact to 3 month's of data.

  8. skinny123 Guest

Let's see what happens the rest of the year, if it goes below .05%, then the red flags will go up.

Yeah, sure. I'm going to maintain my "so what?" stance. You're trying to anticipate events and building a worse case scenario. All before these events even happen. Red flags are warnings but they're not really germane to this discussion.

Do not make a huge issue out of a minor events. And so far the economic data is minor.

One other thing to remember: bad things happen sometimes*, and sometimes good things happen. The thing is that the good things happen MUCH more frequently. That's why the Dow has gone from 800 to well over 20,000 since 1980.

In fact* I think angst and concern over recessions is greatly misplaced emotion. They're nothing more than (an important) aspect of the economic cycle. People think of winter as a season when nature dies. However, without winter, spring blooms could never happen. Recessions are the winter of the economic cycle, but in the long term they actually assist the health of the economy. I could elaborate but I doubt anyone is that interested.

In winter months you should be prepared, jacket, winter boots, winter tires and a large supply of logs.

Of course, but that doesn't prevent the onset of winter. It also allows for a stronger/better future.

Correct me if I'm wrong but to me your message implies that the Trump admin. is not capable of responding to changing conditions.

No, I'm speaking of the individual being prepared for it. Try to bank a reserve fund in case of a layoff, be resourceful, be ready and willing to relocate if need be. Never put your faith or trust in a government or anyone besides yourself.

O.K., skinny. Thanks for correcting me.

The root cause for most recessions is that the labor force is not properly equipped to succeed in the economy. In other words, the best thing an individual can do to protect themselves is to get educated with new technologies, processes - whatever field they're in then they should be cutting edge. If done en masse this would reduce the frequency and severity of recessions.

Most people need to be jolted into taking such a step, and that will belabor their pain. A recession provides just that jolt.

Learn things! Stay on top of what's going around your business. Learn to learn more quickly (that can be done).

  14. skinny123 Guest

Yeah, being resourceful, possibly taking on a job that you used to do twenty years ago just to get by. Also taking courses and staying on top of the times, take a web design course, you could also try starting up a small business with very low start-up costs. You have to be innovative and open minded, sitting around and complaining about the government won't do any good.

You know, skinny, I have come to really appreciate conversations with you. I firmly believe that we learn more from those who we disagree with, (civil disagreement is the catalyst for positive change*).

I also like the fact that you can take a punch and then give me one right back. I hate when I have to pussyfoot around an issue for fear of offending someone. This makes for a more productive conversation.

I certainly hope you realize that I never intend malice or disrespect. Sure, we have different views, but I know that my life is richer for having heard yours.

Going back to the * concept that disagreement is good. Look at the corollary stance: what happens when everyone agrees on a point (or, sadly, voices assent so to not look argumentative)? When everyone agrees then discussion is squashed and there's no opportunity for fresh ideas. So, everyone may (appear) to be in agreement, but there's a chance that everyone is wrong. Civil disagreement greatly reduces the chances of poor conclusions.

I'm going add my two cents to your message which I fully endorse. Regardless of one's career, the most important thing is to learn how to learn quickly. Liberal arts may not seem important, but their virtue is that they train the mind to adapt to moving stimuli; to see the other side of the coin easily, etc. For me, language study has been interesting way to keep my mind nimble. Another is art; go to museums and even if what you see does not meet your tastes, contemplate why the art is deemed significant to be in that museum.

I think that recent studies indicate that a young person today will go through 3 or 4 career changes (not just job changes) over their lifetime. Sometimes that is because the career they start out in become a dying business. So staying on top of trends in your field is important, but it's equally important to discern when conditions are turning nasty. If one needs to switch fields then that "liberal arts" education will become very handy.

Whether you agree with him or not, Colbert is putting $$$ into CBS's pocket. He's doing his job, so he won't be fired.

Whether you agree or not, He also can pretty much say whatever he wants. Late night guys have been doing it forever to Presidents. Maybe not to this degree but just the same.

I also appreciate this kind of back and forth between two guys with intelligent opinions that doesn't disintegrate to name calling.
