I was watching the game outside the ACC on the big screen last night and a scalper offered me a ticket to go into the game for $10. There was one period remaining, not a bad deal, pens on a saturday night and an OT win.

although I keep living for the moment and I quit drinking, I am living everyday like its my last. I spend money, I save money, I got tons of clothes and food. I got a 3 game plan for lower level Phillies tix in 17 to get on the list for future years for tix sales as I think once they're good again, they will sell out etc. I travel and do my own thing etc. I don't fear the end bc we're all ending if a dirty bomb goes off. I got tons of stuff from prepping too. im ready.

    I just keep living - L I V I N G!

That's a good way to look at things. But, I believe that there's an important addendum we'd all be prudent to observe:

Live for the moment; live everyday like its our last. But, plan and prepare for the future.

We never know with life. I had a heart attack in April - I didn't die, and now my doctors tell me my life expectancy is to live well into my 80's, (believe it or not, that's still a way off). So I try to live life as if each day could be my last, because it definitely could. But the probability is that I have a few decades to live. It'll be a lot more comfortable if I stash away a few bucks for that time.

I do not refuse myself pleasures today, and I will pay for anything I want. But, I won't go into debt to do that. Debt is one of the most crippling things one can have going into retirement.

Save gradually. Take advantage of tax-advantaged savings plans. Have a budget and live by that - but do not neglect budgeting for today's pleasures.

I don't know if you're including a mortgage as debt In twenty years there's going to be a lot of retirees with a mortgage still owing on their property.

Of course a mortgage is debt. What else would we call it?

Note, I did not say debt is bad. Good debt leverages our situation to afford a residence that we cannot afford to pay cash for. But, by the time one reaches retirement it could prove to be one of the best investments one ever made.

I am not saying that one cannot go into retirement with a mortgage, but it is much better not to. It may be better for those in that situation to consider downsizing.

Sadly, the savings rate in the US is woefully low for many. So, what difference is it if one has debt? They're fucked anyway. But, people would be surprised at how easy and painless it is to save & plan. The key is to not be daunted by the task and just start. Start, and take one step at a time.
