He may not last the season I agree and he may get the Axe on Turkey Thursday when they Host The Giants.
Kirk Cousins: Vikings told me they didn’t plan to draft a quarterback if I re-signed A recent item from Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com regarding Minnesota’s quest for a franchise quarterback made it clear that they preferred to draft a quarterback in round one but to keep Kirk Cousins as the starter, for 2024 or longer. That wasn’t the message that was communicated to Cousins. Appearing on the latest episode of the Scoop City podcast, Cousins said that, at the time he was deciding on his future, the Vikings weren’t planning to draft a new quarterback. “I don’t think they were ready to go there yet in March,” Cousins said, via quotes distributed by TheAthletic.com. “I think the reality is just that they wanted to give themselves that flexibility. And I remember [coach] Kevin [O’Connell]'s words, which I’m not going to hold them to, were, ‘Hey, if we sign you back, I would think it’s very unlikely that we would draft somebody.’ It was something to that effect. But I also know in the league things change.” He knows things change from what happened after he signed with the Falcons. Presumably, they told him something similar about not using the eighth overall pick on a player who wouldn’t help the team win this year. Still, Cousins got more security in Atlanta than he would have gotten in Minnesota. His new contract carries $90 million guaranteed through the first two years, with another $10 million in 2026 that will become fully guaranteed in March 2025. “I just felt it had been — and was going to be — basically one year, one year, one year,” Cousins said regarding his situation in Minnesota. “I felt like, ‘Yeah, maybe I do want to play in Minnesota another five or six years, but it’s going to be on one-year contracts.’ That’s the plan they’ve chosen that they wanted to walk. I thought, ‘OK, I don’t really want to do that. I’ll do it if it’s my only option.’” Whether he stays in Atlanta more than one year remains to be seen. Two seems to be the outer limit, unless they plan on sitting 24-year-old Michael Penix Jr. for three seasons. As mentioned earlier today, the final decision as to when Penix takes over could be made, or at least heavily influenced, by owner Arthur Blank. Regardless, Cousins will make $62.5 million this year, and he’s guaranteed to add $27.5 million next year. It seems clear that, even though Minnesota and Atlanta both opted for top-10 quarterbacks in the draft, Cousins was never going to get a deal like that one from the Vikings. PFT
Dennis Allen: Taysom Hill will play a lot of positions, including quarterback Taysom Hill has never had a clearly defined position during his eight seasons with the Saints, and he won’t have one this year either. Saints head coach Dennis Allen said the Saints expect Hill to remain a jack of all trades, and Allen made clear that quarterback remains one of the positions Hill will play. “He’s gonna do a lot of stuff. He’s gonna run routes from in line, out wide, out of the backfield, he’s going to block, he’s going to run the ball out of the backfield, I think he’s going to do a lot of stuff. He’s going to line up at the quarterback position at some point in time. I think he’s an awesome weapon to have,” Allen said. Hill said new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is going to use the fullback position in new and interesting ways and that Hill will get some snaps at fullback. “I feel like the use of the fullback in this system, that role has been expanded,” Hill said. “I have done more of that.” Ultimately, Hill said, his role in the offense is a work in progress. “I feel like I have a good idea but I still think that they’re figuring out what that is going to look like,” Hill said. Hill turns 34 next month, but as a player he’s continuing to evolve. PFT
Kyler Murray feels a sense of urgency to win now Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was hailed as the team’s savior when it drafted him No. 1 overall. That was six seasons ago, and the Cardinals have gotten no closer to the Super Bowl than they had before he arrived. He has played in one playoff game, and it was the worst game of his career. Murray, 26, went 42-0 at Allen High School in winning three Texas state titles. He went 12-2 at Oklahoma, getting the Sooners to the College Football Playoff. The Cardinals are 28-36-1 in his regular-season starts and have only one winning season. “I’m not used to losing,” Murray said, via David Brandt of the Associated Press. “I know it sounds cliche, been five years going on six, but haven’t won yet. The sense of urgency is definitely there. You never know when the game is going to be taken away from you. You never know how long you’ll be playing. “My goal is to be the best.” Murray missed the first half of last season while rehabbing from the torn ACL in his right knee. He made it back 11 months after his injury, and the Cardinals, who started 1-8 without him, went 3-5 in his return. He feels better heading into this year. “Last year was just such a whirlwind for me as far as being hurt, then rehabbing the whole year, coming back in the middle of the season,” Murray said. “I think this year, starting off fresh, it’s a big difference.” No one expects much of the Cardinals this season, and Murray hopes to prove them wrong. Lamar Jackson: I want to be a champion Lamar Jackson has two MVP awards and a 58-19 record in the regular season. He is a top-five quarterback in the league. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said the first day of camp that his vision for Jackson is to be remembered as one of the all-time greats. “I appreciate that coming from coach,” Jackson said, via Clifton Brown of the team website. “Keep doing what I’m doing. Keep trying to get better. Keep trying to win these games. Keep trying to reach that goal. “I’m not the GOAT [greatest of all time]. Tom Brady’s the GOAT. But I believe that’s motivation. I appreciate that. I’m still on my way.” Jackson, 27, reached the AFC Championship Game for the first time last season. He has yet to play in a Super Bowl and is only 2-4 in the postseason. Harbaugh said he believes the criticism of Jackson is unfair. Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and John Elway are among the quarterbacks who were older than Jackson before winning a first Super Bowl. “Patience is the key,” Jackson said. “Only a few quarterbacks have won a Super Bowl in the last few years. A lot of people haven’t won. I’m focusing on me, and I want that real bad. I’m just focusing on what I can control and go from there.” Patrick Mahomes, who turns 29 in September, has won three of the past five Super Bowls and has become the measuring stick for young quarterbacks. Jackson wants what Mahomes has. On the night the Ravens drafted him in 2018, Jackson promised Baltimore a Super Bowl. “That’s been the first check box for me since 2018,” Jackson said. “April 26, whenever I was drafted, I said that, and I meant that. But this is the highest level of this game we play. You’ve got to go out a champion, and that’s what I want to be labeled, as a champion, not just MVP here and there. I want to be a champion.” PFT
Bears rookie QB Caleb Williams says he would like to play in Hall of Fame Game vs. Texans Caleb Williams is set to suit up for the first time as a Chicago Bear with Thursday's preseason-opening Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. Well, that is if he plays at all. Williams' status for Chicago's contest against the Houston Texans remains to be determined, but he told reporters on Monday he'd play if the decision was solely up to him. The main motivation isn't difficult to find, either: He knows he needs live reps. "I always think there's more pros than cons in anything, especially for a young guy like myself," Williams said. "The reps are always paramount for anybody like myself, a young rookie, a second-year guy, a third-year guy, it's paramount. It's really important and we'll see about these preseason games coming, how they will play out." One could claim that Williams is getting all of the reps he needs in practice, but those are often controlled environments in which familiarity grows over weeks spent competing against each other. That's a main reason why joint practices are becoming increasingly appealing to coaches across the league. But nothing matches game reps, and Williams believes they'd help him advance the decision-making side of his game to the next stage. "I would say working on my blitz and coverage looks and feeling the umbrella of the defense," Williams said when asked what he feels he needs to improve before Week 1 against the Titans, "and feeling that out to adjust protection; to adjust whether it's a run, flip the run into it, flip the protection, get to a quick gain, get to a cover-zero check, however the structure of it works out. Just progressing, and a lot of that comes with seeing it and reps, and that's why also preseason, those things are so important." The opposite side of this argument concerns preserving Williams' health, a reasonable goal for a team that just traded away a former first-round quarterback in Justin Fields, spent the No. 1 overall pick on Williams and is pinning its future on his shoulders. But part of preparing a quarterback for the pro game is providing them with necessary experience. When Week 1 arrives, the gloves come off. Williams made an all-but-bulletproof case for his participation in Thursday's game, but he knows he won't have the final say on the matter. That will be up to Matt Eberflus. "I would love to get out there and play," he said. "It's pretty awesome to be at Canton, but it's coach's decision." NFL.com

I tell you no lie... Ive been on the wagon and Im going to stay there. Clean and Sober, right here, right now, hopefully forever. If I were still drinking, Id wash that case down with whiskey, lol.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams agreed to terms Sunday on an adjusted contract, but more details have been unveiled. Stafford's adjustment includes a $23.5 million guaranteed salary in 2024, a $12.5 million signing bonus and a $4 million guaranteed March roster bonus, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday evening. Essentially, it's a one-year $40 million deal as Stafford gave up his other 2025 guarantees, Pelissero noted, adding the quarterback and the Rams are likely to play out this season and then reassess. Though Stafford and the squad came to an understanding that an adjustment would be had, which led to him reporting to training camp on time, the parties did not come to terms until Sunday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The 36-year-old led the Rams to a Super Bowl in his first season with the club after he was acquired from the Detroit Lions in a seismic trade that re-shaped both franchises. Stafford battled injuries in a down 2022, but though he had some more ailments in 2023, he rounded back into form and keyed L.A.'s playoff return. Still possessing a top-level arm, Stafford threw for 3,965 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 15 games. Now, the veteran has one big season ahead for himself and the Rams. NFL.com
Jayden Daniels will play in preseason opener at Jets The Jayden Daniels era in D.C. begins on Saturday. Via multiple reports, Commanders coach Dan Quinn told reporters on Sunday that Daniels will play in the team’s preseason opener at the Jets. It’s no surprise, but it’s never entirely clear how coaches will approach the distribution of reps in a three-game preseason. And there’s also a calculated risk to shifting any quarterback from the no-touch practice rules to full-contact football. Daniels should be able to protect himself. He enters the NFL as one of its most physically gifted quarterbacks. The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner can both throw and run his way out of trouble. It’s unclear how long he’ll play. Other options on the roster are Marcus Mariota, Jeff Driskel, and undrafted rookie Sam Hartman. It’s also unclear whether the Jets’ starter, Aaron Rodgers, will be playing in that same game. PFT
It appears Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin may have underestimated all that Fields can do when on the field. "I love his professionalism, his consistent approach to work," Tomlin said about Fields during a recent NFL Network appearance, as shared by Joe Clark of Steelers Depot. "He's got an even-keel demeanor that's good for leadership. And I've been surprised by his athleticism to be quite honest with you. I've seen video, obviously, but to see it up close and personal every day, he's a special athlete, man. He can do a lot." _______ ________________ Im telling you, the margin between Wilson and Fields as to who is the starter may be getting smaller. Wilson better get on the field.
Anthony Richardson 'a lot more comfortable' in Colts offense entering Year 2 Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is healthy and gearing up for Year 2 after injuries sideswiped his rookie campaign. The 22-year-old believes his second offseason in coach Shane Steichen's scheme has afforded more command. "It's definitely easier to manage our offense now," Richardson said at training camp, via The Associated Press. "I'm a lot more comfortable, a lot more comfortable with the call Shane is calling in. It has been good so far -- making plays with the offense, diving deeper into the offense and learning a lot more, and then just trying to take advantage of the defense." Richardson appeared in just four games as a rookie and had his season end due to a shoulder injury in Week 5. While learning under fire would have been ideal, the time on the sideline gave Richardson a different perspective of how to run the offense. "He had that opportunity to sit back and watch," Steichen said. "Throughout the season, you have extra meetings with him on the side and just going through football stuff, football knowledge, just keep getting that memory bank full of different looks and things we're going to run in the season." The QB has also looked in better sync with his wideouts during camp. "The communication is definitely, has advanced for us. Last year was more so, 'OK, follow the read, do this,'" Richardson said. "Now it's like, 'OK if the defense does this, now I want you to think about this right here.' Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But it's just trying to find ways to tweak our offense and get comfortable with each other. But I definitely feel like there's been a huge jump from last year to this year." Much of the Colts' potential in 2024 rests on Richardson staying healthy and improving on the flashes of brilliance we saw from the dynamic quarterback in 2023. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith returned to practice on Monday and he should be fine going forward. Smith missed several practices in a row last week with knee and hip injuries. But head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters after Monday’s session that it was “great” to have Smith back and the QB should be fine going forward. “As far as I know, I think he’s rolling,” Macdonald said, via Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune. Sam Howell and P.J. Walker had been taking the snaps at quarterback with Smith sidelined. Smith, 33, threw for 3,624 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2023.
